The guy did three things: A) He played Luke Skywalker because he was told that three more movies with this caracter in it would soon be made, with or without him, the original actor, reprising his role and with Disney being fine with the concept of bringing another actor to portray the "updated version", M.H decided to do his job and tried to channel, to be the real Luke Skywalker, as best he could. B) He acted his best and to his credit, he was formidable despite the obvious and genuine fact that he found this version of Luke Sky. repulsive. He did as much as he could whilst tied, gagged and bound to say, do and behave like he was told, both when acting on screen and during interviews, meaning that if nothing else, M.H did his best with what could be done, despite his protest and reticence. C) Finally, he warned and informed the public about what he refuted openly first, before being forced to "STFU" by Disney and he did so because he didn't want to fuel the fire created by fan outrage after facing the idea that Luke would canonically become this sorry old hermit that even Gollum would find pitiful beyond compare. We KNOW M.H didn't agree at all with the way Luke Skywalker, as a caracter, was utterly destroyed. Luke, as an example and as a form of inspiration, was revered, all over the world, as an embodiment of hope and heroism. M.H, of course, was happy to represent those traits through his caracter, but with the new trilogy it was either him, doing what he didn't want to do, or someone else, a willing "yes man", a person that wouldn't even try to act like the real Luke Skywalker was back in the original trilogy. Since Lea, Han, Chewbacca and pretty much everyone else but Lando came back as beloved caracters, portrayed by the same folks, M.H did the same for Luke, rather than be left out of Star Wars and become the live version of what they say Luke has: A grumpy old bitter husk sniveling and mumbling in the shadows. He just didn't know what they would do with the caracter and once he was under contract, well...

This is why I think of Legends as the accurate depiction of Luke after Return Of The Jedi. Because even though he faces all sorts of trials and tribulations throughout the post-Endor period, from getting tossed out of his own body by a Sith ghost, to losing his nephew to the Dark Side, to even falling to the Dark Side himself for a brief time, Luke still remains the hero we all knew and love from the Original Trilogy. He saves coutless lives through his selfless actions, always does what's best for his family, even at great personal risk, and works tirelessly to recreate the Jedi Order. He is, in effect, the man Anakin Skywalker should've become, and the opposite of the man Darth Vader became. That is f*cking brilliant storytelling.

    • @Adorni
      @Adorni Před 6 lety +144

Politics, when they're written well in stories, can be very entertaining. Look at "A Song of Ice and Fire." Those books are almost entirely about the politics between different factions vying for the Iron Throne. Final Fantasy Tactics is widely considered one of the best games to bear the title "Final Fantasy," and it's got a huge political backdrop behind it. "Politics" are intrinsic to the way a world is built, because you have to understand how different opposing forces will interact with each other on a basic level.
Where this fails is when you try shoehorning in social politics in hamfisted and unwanted fashions, breaking your world's lore in the process. When the only conceivable reason, for example, that Rey is so bloody powerful as a Jedi seems to be because she's a woman (because I have tried to figure out why else this would be) you are basically breaking the pre-established lore in half like a twix bar; Jedi were people born with the ability to feel and manipulate the Force, but had to learn how to do it by other Jedi. They had to learn how to fight with a Lightsaber, how to resist the pull of the Dark Side. And they grew stronger or weaker by using their power regularly, and that each individual Jedi had their own respective strength caps.
The reason, for example, Obi Wan was able to apparently effortlessly alter two Stormtrooper's cognitive perceptions by making a gesture and saying "These aren't the droids you're looking for," isn't because it's an easy thing to do, it's because he's had years and years of practice doing this, especially given that the Empire was actively hunting him down for that period of time, and using the Mind Trick was probably one of his most effective tools. Practice makes perfect, as the old saying goes. So to have Rey perform the trick on a Storm Trooper, when she's never been shown on-screen of Force Users being able to do this, makes no sense whatsoever. Why is this? Well I guess it's because she's a woman? Yaaaay, girl power XP

and making stupid jokes that were not funny. It was visually well executed and that is it. Everything else was a mess at best and an unmitigated disaster at worst. The space chase was beyond ridiculous, there were no light saber fights with actual sabers clashing, and Rey is such an unbelievable Mary Sue that you feel no connection to her whatsoever. Last Jedi: Utter betrayal of canon, a sequel to seven movies that only exist in Rian Johnson's head.
Rise of Skywalker: Desperate flailing and begging to be taken back, including driving by the ex's house at night in hopes the ex is there, and that holding up a boombox thing, at least until the restraining order is issued.

That's the quality of the goddamn script. Rian Johnson wrote draft 1 of his script before The Force Awakens had finished filming. He went so far as to ask JJ Abrams to change Luke's scene at the end, from him meditating with rocks floating around him to standing and staring wistfully at the horizon instead. JJ Abrams then provided Rian Johnson with a rough draft of potential episodes 8 and 9. Rian Johnson threw those in the trash, finalized his script (changing almost nothing from the first draft) and immediately went about insulting those that disagreed with him and antagonizing the fans before filming of episode 8 even began.
It reads like fan fiction, went through precisely as many redrafts, and has the same surrounding level of professionalism. Or at least, I _would_ say that if I haven't read fan fictions that are Hugo Award-level quality and effort. And I mean that sincerely, I have a list of fan stories from Witcher, Star Wars, Star Trek, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and a half dozen other fandoms that are better written than half the shit coming out today.

    - Poe risked his life big time and destroyed Star Killer base for The Resistence saving billions of lives. Took out the the big canons of the dreadnaught saving the resistence ships from certain annihilation. The Resistence doesn't trust him, slapping him, calling him an out of control fly boy, shooting him with a stun gun, putting him in jail, won't give him life saving information. - Rose wants to get in and out quickly on the Canto Bight mission. Wears a greasy mechanic outfit in the casino. Lands ship in the middle of beach, in front of casino.
    - Hux is commander over the fleet. Doesn't command to do even the most basic military tactics. (in ESB two star destroyers intercepted the Falcon when it was being chased)
    - The starships are fusion powered and fuel would last for years. Ships run on gas and will be out in a few hours, Rose says "the fleet is running on fumes".
    - They say "may the force be with you" in Star Wars. Holdo says "godspeed rebels". (uhm, aren't they the resistence?)

Think you're an actor and your very first "real" role, because before Luke he only played some sort of extras on TV series, is such a huge thing that you're typecast for life. Everyone knew him and everyone associated him with Luke. Look up his movie history, aside of Star Wars, all he did was TV stuff and some voice acting.
He had two choices. Break apart under the fact that he'll never be anything but Luke Skywalker or embrace it. And he did embrace it. I mean, there's worse things you could be typecast as than the hero that saves the galaxy, beloved by every fan in the world.
It really felt like he "became" that character. It may sound weird, but I honestly have the feeling that he made that character a part of himself.

There’s little to no antagonistic presence to drive tension and make the stakes feel real, so they try hamfisting in someone that can fill that antagonistic role for that boring segment of the movie. Man that really hurts when I think of the opportunity wasted there. They could have shot a flash back scene wit Kylo on his first day at Luke Jedi training. Han, and Leia seeing there son off with Luke. Reminiscing on old times. The could have cut the scene but at least it would have been shot, and maybe used for a directors cut. Worst part of Poe being trashed for the bombers is that it was implied that it was Leia's plan that he followed in the first place. So he is trashed for following the plan that was decided upon. First off, I’ll just say thank you for the incredibly in-depth review of this movie and the other movies from a series that were a huge part of my childhood.
I was born in 1975 and don’t have any memories that don’t include seeing the world through a lens of (original trilogy) Star Wars-induced wonder, optimism, and creativity. It very much shaped my ideas of right and wrong, personal responsibility, bravery in the face of overwhelming odds, and self sacrifice in service to those you love and others in general. Obviously I’m not a hero who helped save the world, or you would have heard of me, but the way you view heroism in general can affect the way you approach smaller conflicts in life.
What these later movies have done to damage that incredibly inspiring and beautiful story is shameful, and the screenwriters and movie executives should be embarrassed. I really appreciate the time, effort, research, focus, humor, and writing that you have put into not just this video, but all of the related videos in your analysis series. The quality speaks to your talent and dedication, and in my honest opinion, they stand head and shoulders above the other critiques I’ve seen. And there are some other very good reviews out there, so that is no small praise.
One final compliment, since I’ll only leave this one comment as a blanket over the whole video series- I love that you use Battlefront II gameplay footage as the background. I own a single video game, and a single game console, and it’s a Sony PlayStation 2 with Star Wars: Battlefront II that my stepsons got me a couple of years ago for Father’s Day. They knew that it was the only video game that I ever really enjoyed, and played countless hours of in the years between 2005 and 2010. I had several spinal surgeries starting in 2002 until 2006, so I was confined to a recliner or bed for many months throughout recovery, and I played that game so much that I eventually beat it. I then didn’t pick it up again until their incredibly thoughtful gift. It was very cool to me that you mentioned it as “Battlefront II- the good one”- and it sparked me leaving this comment, as I’m rewatching this entire video series for the 3rd or 4th time.
So- sorry for such a book-length comment, and thanks again for such a great set of videos.

An important difference to keep in mind for Yoda’s exile versus Luke’s is when and why Yoda made the decision. Yoda didn’t go into exile when the Jedi Order failed to stop Sidious. He went into exile after failing to kill Sidious.
Yoda wasn’t sulking and waiting to die. He failed to stop the villain, realized he was out of his depth, and retreated so as to safeguard the knowledge and wisdom of the Order that he embodied. Plus, while in exile, he clearly achieved the clarity and insight needed to help revitalize the Order through anyone he might train. Him rejecting Luke was simply him recognizing that the student he was sent was not mentally mature enough to avoid making things worse. Besides, he had Leia as a backup. It was risky to reject one twin without really knowing the second was a better option, but it isn’t a contradiction within the context of the Originals (though I agree that him promising to train Luke and Leia when they were infants is a plot hole within the context of the Prequels).
Luke, by contrast, was just waiting to die. There was nothing gained by him sitting around for years, and he never intended for anything to be gained. He wasn’t even hiding from a threat in the hopes of training new Jedi. He was just sulking.
This doesn’t make the Prequel-introduced plot hole any less silly. However, we can’t use Yoda’s actions in the previous trilogies as evidence to support Luke’s in the Sequels. The situations and motivations are simply not the same.

And imo one of the best things about it was how it showed both what the New Republic would be like then and what the Empire remnants would be doing to try to get back in power. We hear about systems/planets that support either side, and we see both sides working to get more planets to their side. Things like that don't seem to have been a priority at any part of the process in making these new films.

I've never even seen _The Last Jedi_ and this is my second time watching through them. It's fascinating to learn about the mechanics of storytelling. A lot of us have an instinctual understanding of what is or isn't good storytelling and I enjoy hearing why that is.

They should start episode 9 with Rey suddenly back on the island with Luke still holding out his lightsaber to him realizing everything that transpired in the last Jedi was just Luke trolling her with some force trick to teach her about over confidence or some shit.
