  • Batman & Robin is a 1997 American superhero film based on the DC Comics characters Batman and Robin.
It is the sequel to the 1995 film Batman Forever, the fourth and final installment of Warner Bros.' initial Batman film series. The film was directed by Joel Schumacher and written by Akiva Goldsman.
The film stars George Clooney replacing Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne/Batman while Chris O'Donnell reprise his role as Dick Grayson/Robin alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman, Alicia Silverstone, Michael Gough, Pat Hingle, and Elle Macpherson.
The film tells the story of Batman and Robin as they attempt to prevent Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy from freezing all mankind to death and repopulating the earth with mutant plants, while at the same time struggling to keep their partnership together.
It is also to date the only live-action film appearance of Batgirl, portrayed by Alicia Silverstone, who helps the titular characters fight the villains.
Warner Bros. fast-tracked development for Batman & Robin following the box office success of Batman Forever. Schumacher and Goldsman conceived the storyline during pre-production on A Time to Kill, while Kilmer decided not to reprise his role over scheduling conflicts with The Saint.
Schumacher had a strong interest in casting William Baldwin in Kilmer's place before George Clooney won the role.
Principal photography began in September 1996 and finished in January 1997, two weeks ahead of the shooting schedule.
Batman & Robin premiered in Los Angeles on June 12, 1997, and went into general release on June 20.
Making $238.2 million worldwide against a production budget of $160 million, the film was a critical failure and often ranks among the worst films of all time.
It is also the lowest-grossing live-action Batman film to date. Due to the film's poor reception, Warner Bros. cancelled a sequel, Batman Unchained, and rebooted the film series with Batman Begins in 2005.
One of the songs recorded for the film, "The End Is the Beginning Is the End" by The Smashing Pumpkins, won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards.
After Batman & Robin’s overwhelmingly negative reception, the cast & crew (most notably Clooney & Schumacher) would frequently disown and apologise for the film over the course of years since its release.

This one was definitely more a love letter to the old Adam West Batman series. It's funny how the Burton/Schumacher Batman movies progressed like the classic Batman comics where it started out the dark, gothic noir style and morphed into the bright, colorful campy style.

I don't think Batman & Robin is the worst ever made! That title for me has to go films like The Room, Scary Movie 5, Epic Movie, 50 Shades of Black, Disaster Movie etc. However I do think Batman & Robin is the worst ever made by a highly competent and proven director!! Joel Schumacher was actually a very talented and proven director. He directed classics such as The Client, A Time to Kill, The Lost Boys, Tigerland etc.

I liked this film when I was a kid. I believe I saw it in the theater when I was kid but I don’t remember. I grew up with this film like the other Batman films but unlike Batman Forever, I grew to hate this movie.
It’s crazy how similar the first 4 Batman movies are to the Christoper Reeves Superman films. For both franchises, most people enjoy the first two and mostly everyone hates the last 2. And for me, I can’t stand that people lump Batman Forever with Batman And Robin just like how I don’t like when people lump Superman 3 with Superman 4. Good job reviewing these films again Matt.

"Superman III" actually wasn't that bad. Not as good as the first two, but still enjoyable. However, Richard Pryor was useless and the blonde woman crony & *especially* that darn kid got *right* on my nerves. Like you *just wanted* the harvesters to crush him! George Clooney has said countless times how he absolutely hates this movie, I recall what inspired Joel to cast him in the role was a print ad of him in From Dusk Till Dawn and he drew a bat-cowl on the picture. Clooney certainly has proven to be a good actor, but even he admits that this wasn't his best. And the picture of Mr Freeze in the slippers is the very first Batman and Robin image I ever saw, it was from one of those 'official movie mags'. The problem was with "Batman and Robin" was it wanted to be a campy tribute to the 1960s TV series aiming at kids who will buy their toys one minute, and then make it a serious emotional drama aiming at teens/accompanying adults the next. That's why the movie didn't work. It was all over the place in direction the entire film. Let alone comparing it to Tim Burton or Christopher Nolan's versions. *You are on to a loser* if the whole film spends it's time fighting for identity it's *entire* running time. Arnie and Uma's complete hammy overacting didn't help either. Nor did the ridiculously nonsensical writing/plotting. Like, why are Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy teaming up when their own goals are *completely* noncompatible?

With this one they tried to repeat the Hit that was Batman Forever they figured if people liked Forever being a popcorn movie why not make an even bigger popcorn movie. This movie suffers from overdoing everything that worked in Forever to the point of extreme insanity. Arnold got the role as Freeze because they were trying to get someone that could equal the comedy of Jim Carry they wanted Arnold to bring his funny PUN delivery to the character. The problem is Ice is the only joke that Arnold gets in the entire film it's overkill everything is overdone here. George as Batman here is super plain and lifeless Chris as Robin is doing fine for what he's told to do and Bane is just there he does nothing. Poison Ivy is also just there I have never been a fan of that villain and her plant gimmick. This film suffers from what most sequels do excess going too far with it. Had the film kept a similar or same tone as Batman Forever it could have worked as just popcorn fun like that one. People like the Nolan films because they like that he treats Batman super seriously like the comics while making him feel like a real-world character. This movie takes the exact opposite approach it's a cartoon that could have worked if it was fun but it overdoes everything. Part of me wonders though if someone could like this movie if they did love the 60s show I have no idea because I also like the 60s show always found this lesser and dumber and less well executed in the camp variety.

I 100% agree to disagree with your opinion of a fun and campy comic book adaptation, which clearly does not take itself serious& that's part of its charm. Now,is it a perfect campy made film,no not at all but I give credit for effort and to be honest, it in a slight way kind of is a satire to its previous film because take George Clooney performance,he is a capable actor but his portrayal of Bob cane anti-hero is more than comfortable in his altar ego,as if it's on purpose,a difference from Kilmer who in my humble opinion failed at taking the character serious! The threat as well is more than comfortable and knows their identity& purpose. Around gave a tailor made performance as Victor freeze,to be honest, this film took me back,in a updated version,to Adam west fun& hilarious far fetch over the top Batman :-) in a way, that's how I looked at batman and robin, just think about it,did anyone really take Adam west or Burt ward serious? I know I didn't& that was the appeal& tone which the studio went for& achieved. I'd rather enjoy batman and robin than winter soldier, guardians of the galaxy,Thor& Aquaman because I was more entertained :-) the same formula used in batman forever,is stretched out in it's entirety,as if let's take what did previous& go over the top with it& make sure you know it,I can dig it :-) all of course, in my humble opinion.

I've never had a chance to catch this film on TV. Though from what I've heard it sounds like a Drag Queen fest.

Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze were bad complementary villains because plant life doesn't survive well with ice. Poison Ivy would've paired better with Scarecrow and Mr. Freeze with Penguin.

Yeah this movie sucks, but what sucks even more is that fact that you got death threats just because you had a different opinion of a movie. Looking forward to this RANT Matt.

The first 2 movies were awesome, but then it started falling apart. I hated Batman Forever but it's a masterpiece compared to Batman and Robin. Batman and Robin is a horrendous pile of garbage

@@osmosisdarkdavid26 it's boring tho... I would go as far as saying that it's too long. The only one I genuinely like from the trilogy is the second one.
