just a tip for all you first timers trying this at home. It might not be as easy as he makes it look in the video for you to do on your own. He does an excellent job but keep in mind he is condensing a 2-3 hr procedure into a 20 min video. be sure you have all the proper tools.. most japanese cars use metric fasteners.. YOU WILL NEED METRIC TOOLS! finding the closest US tool isnt gonna cut it, especially for those super tight bracket bolts that you need to hit with a hammer. make sure you have good lighting and have someone do it with you if it is your first time. also keep in mind that you could encounter something that you may not be equipped to fix such as a seized caliper and then you will be stuck. just things to consider before you dig yourself into a pile of manure and with that best of luck
A seized caliper is not a big problem, plenty of videos that show how to replace those as well.
Good advice definitely .
Is it really a 2-3 hr process? Wait, what if i’m just replacing the brake pads and nothing else?
it took me about 40 min today, that was with me being extra careful. its very simple my guy
10-15 minutes a side......lol....if it takes longer than that you are doing it wrong
My 5-year-old and I just watched this together and now he can't wait to help me change the brakes and rotors. He kept pointing to each part and repeating what it was called. Your videos are awesome!!!

I'm so grateful for people like you, Chris. You help poor folks such as myself learn how to do our own repairs, instead of paying so much for garage labor. Your videos are professional, clear, and straightforward. Thanks, man!

You know, I used to be anxious about messing about with car mechanics despite loving cars. This week I did my first service (oil, filters, plugs) on a family members car thanks to videos on CZcams. I thought that's about where I'd stop, but I watch this videos and think to myself... Hey, I've got most of the tools now. I'll just keep my old second car and use it to teach myself more.
Thanks Chris for these easy to understand videos, they really put a lot of confidence in us newbies to attempt work. I'd never risk safety and have a couple of good garages should I ever mess up and need a hand. After doing the servicing last week I'm convinced I'll never need to pay anybody to do oil/filters/plugs on any car I own again.
We've got all the knowledge we need to learn how to do things right here, for free! Gotta love it.
I feel the same way. Taking apprenticeship also at this local family owned repair shop at the moment and I have to say it’s not the same as watching on YT here.
I have been a dyi guy all my life and this is the best video I have ever seen of a brake job.

Thanks a million for this video. Dealership wanted close to $2000 to replace front/rear pads and rotors. Picked up the parts for just under $500 and had all 4 done in just over 2 hours.
Just a suggestion for all of you starters. If you have a junkyard in your area that allows you to pull your own parts (you pull and save) go out there for a couple of hours and “change” the rotors and pads there. Pull them off, put them on. Gather confidence.
Kevin B. Never thought of that thanks
Thank ya
you're changing rotors on old cars? what?
Smartest idea ever !!! Thanks mate

Just a guy who is tight on money and looking for ways to do my own car maintenance without chunking out extra money to someone I don't even know will do it right.
Thanks for all you do! I'm changing mine this coming weekend and even though I had to buy all the tools as well, it still came out under 200 unlike a shop would charge me.
Shirke M You do not need an alignment after doing any brake work. The only time you may need an alignment is when you work on the suspension such as replacing control arms or ball joints.
ChrisFix I just replaced my front anti-sway bars. Do I need an alignment now?
Enigma758 Nope. Sway bars will not affect the alignment.
+ChrisFix What about front struts?
+Guimatics , No
+ChrisFix I NEED A QUICK RESPONSE, CAN I USE ANTISEIZE instead?

This is a very good, clear and step by step video. I have been doing my brake pads for over a decade but I have never done the rotors. I'm just considering replacing the rotors. I probably can do it but this video does give me more confidence and shows me the simple and proper steps on doing it. Thanks Chris!
awesome video. dodge wanted to charge me $659 for front rotors and pads. I did it for $150
ipukeatparties logic right there
Same with Infiniti. They wanted $650 for rear pads and rotors. Got the parts and did myself for $130 and 4 hours time. Paid myself $130 per hour, so I went golfing....
Depending on wear, I usually re-surface the rotors 3 times (as long as there's enough material) before I replace them. Disc brakes usually cost me around $50 over all (including brake cleaner), for the front two, with OEM pads. Your local brake shop should be able to re-surface your rotors for about $20 each, if you don't have a machine in your shop.

Nice video. Looks easy to do. Very clear, good audio and good quality video. I had a quote for $620 to replace front and rear pads and rotors. This will save me hundreds of dollars even after getting the tools that I don't yet have. Thanks!
Chris, This is a really detailed and informative video. Thanks for your efforts. I can't wait to start saving money by doing my own car maintenance. You've made it look easy.
+Rich Edinger Thanks a lot Rich! Hopefully my videos will be helpful!
+Rich Edinger Agreed.... Huge savings over dealership/Midas shops. I finally have a garage to work on my vehicle.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! Your instruction made it soooooo easy. Tried to replace rotors and pads myself (first timer) by just looking at the puzzle pieces. BIG MISTAKE!! Watched your video twice, then got my hands dirty..., again. Had the first wheel back together in 15 minutes. Three more wheels to go...
Your video inserts were a terrific idea. They help immensely. Thanks again :-)
ChrisFix, thank you for this video. You saved me money, anguish and heartache by seeing how easy it is to do disc brakes. I have worked on cars since my early teens but have never replaced disc brakes, always just found it easier to pay the repair shop to do it and besides I was too busy at work. I know drum brakes fairly well, which I have found out many of my younger friends do not know, but now I can fix my disc brakes myself and save big-time! You're a good man for showing us all and God Bless.
Just used this to replace the pads on my 2004 pontiac grand am. Super useful video! Only thing is I didn't have the piston compressor tool so I had to improvise but it worked out. Thank you for making these videos so clear and easy to follow!
Very helpful dude. I'm buying a new car soon and it'd be my first car and I wanna learn how to do simple maintenance like these.
Yaniel Espinosa Great! That is the reason I make these videos so I am glad it was helpful!

Thanks Chrisfix I just removed, painted, replaced my brakes z front and back... I had extra rust inhibitors and paint so I gave both cross members a good sand down and soapy water wash before applying rust inhibitor sealant, primers and ceramic paints. Woohoo you're one of the best instructors.
Thank you!
I'll post pics on insta because I can't here.
I am not a mechanic and I will need new brake pads soon and after watching your videos I feel confident I can do the job myself and save some bucks. Tyvm
Thanks to you I changed my front brakes for the first time! This is coming from someone who never even changed oil in a car before. Of course it rained and I stabbed my finger on the brake clips but I still did it! Thanks chrisfix!

Bro! I seriously look up specifically YOU when ever I am trying to fix my truck! You are the best of the best and I am all about it!
Chris, a couple other tips: don’t forget to grease the end tabs on the brake pads with high-temp brake grease; spray the rotors off one last time with brakleen to get remaining grease smudges off; and don’t don’t forget to ‘seat’ or ‘bed’ your new brakes for max life and even wear.
By "seating" or "bedding" what does that mean?
Pretty much breaking in the brake pads, with your brake pads should of came some instructions to go like 45 mph and slow down to about 5 mph and to do the process about 3 to 4 times @@joelpatterson3118
@@joelpatterson3118 I go about 55 and use my brakes really hard.
Great videos Chris, tackled this job on my 2006 Ranger a few weekends ago and will be replacing my shocks this weekend. Just wanted to leave a comment to potentially help someone else out, doing the clamshell method could potentially bend the brake hardware and cause it to not fit well and scrape against the rotor when you are all done. I had to completely remove the caliper from the mounting bracket to avoiding bending the hardware.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks man, video made it simple to change out pads. Saved $200, and as recommended put $100 a side for tools and $100 for funsies. 2021 and these videos still apply perfectly.
Chris has the best photography. Really better than most others.
How could anyone down vote this? This is an incredibly well made video! Thank you!
That's how you know assholes still exist 🇲🇼
To answer your question: I downvoted the video because it was kind of a slapdash work. Like: only one side of the rotor was cleaned, the shims were not replaced or at least cleaned, the pin or the shims were not greased (the later was only mentioned in the video, but not done).
You're awesome dude! To the point and easy to understand for a first timer like me!
+Ivan Tijerina Thanks a lot!
+ChrisFix what does it mean to bleed the breaks?
One thing I appreciate about your videos is that how you consistently do a good job on your products and how you work a lot of mechanics wouldn't even do half of the little things you did with reason certain ball nuts and screws but great video great job
Chris fix I just fixed my brakes on my 95 Mazda and I took my time and did it very slowly and my cars brakes are now quiet, I wanna thank you as how this was my first time doing something like this, it was actually fun and rewarding thank you again, I wish to learn more about cars from you in the future thanks and cheers!
I did a brake job on my silver suburban (profile pic at time of post) with new rotors, pads, caliper bushings, pins, brake lines, and fluid flush all because of you. Saved me hundreds! I'm sure you get tons of comments and thanks, just had to send another your way.

You are the best teacher ever. You have no idea how impressed everybody is that I just change the brakes and rotors on my car.
Going to a friend's house to change my pads and rotors in a couple days. He's going to be my backup in case I run into an issue, but with this video, I'm feeling pretty confident. Thank you so much!
Awesome video dude! :D
Chris I just watched the pads & rotors video and the drum brakes. You make it look easy. I'm doing 2 vehicles, 2000 Grand Marquis and a 97 Ranger 2WD. On another video(Nissan frt & rear pads and rotor replace) you show a little more lubricating on the pad contact surfaces of the caliper and the back side of the pads. Is that the best way to go?
Thanks for your help. I find your videos very helpful and educational. Spending the weekend changing my break pads and rotors. Its fun to do it yourself. It saves money and you learn how to fix things yourself.
Hello Chris, I just changed my brakes and rotors on my 05 Dodge caravan. thanks to this guide I felt confident enough to do it! Thank you.

+danthemanzizle its best to get the brake pads recommended from you cars manufacturer.. Or something close because not all brake pads work (: just saying

So this is what they wanted to charge me $250 for? I could've done this shit myself it's so easy. Fool me once...
OrganicChemistry2 ahhahah 😂😊😊😊 yeppp fucking dealerships
As long as you have the right tools, no problem.
Nick D that's what I was saying in my head all I need is the tools because there's no way to pay the dealership $715 which I just got mine replaced from a friend I saved $460 because my front rotors and break pads cost about $255. So yeah dealership are horrible they can only fool person who for the first time has no idea that this video shows you can do it! Lol

that is the wrong kind of silicone to use for caliper pins. Use the paste type, not liquid.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I was initially intimidated to change my own brakes but after watching video I realized it was relatively easy, which it was.
Best disc brake tutorial I've seen on CZcams. Nice! Big mahalos Chris!
use a c clamp if you don't have that tool
Remove/loosen the brake resv. cap and use a large channel locks, then "hang" up the assembly with an old metal hanger (also works).
Auto parts stores may also have the tool that you can borrow. You put down a deposit which they give back when you return the tool. That said, I usually use a c-clamp.
I've always used a C clamp and block of wood to spread out the pressure, that's what all the mechanics used when I was growing up. Had no idea they actually made a tool for it.
@@johnhoog8279 this is the first time I seen a tool for it too, I've always used a c clamp

One comment, be sure to clean both sides of the brake rotor with Brake Clean before installing it. You can just spray them in the cardboard box that they came in. Chris only cleaned the front side of the brake rotor. He should have cleaned the back side as well.
Had to come see this, been over 15 years since i changed brakes myself. Gonna do 1 of my rears tomorrow and my fronts in about a week. Thanx, very helpful although to remove the caliper bracket you need a torx 50 to remove the 2 bolts, fucken ford and their torx !lol

I just wanted to say thank you for the super helpful video. My brakes didn't go as planned.
