Brakes are the unsung heroes of performance. Everybody loves going fast, but slowing down is important too. There’s disk brakes, vented brakes, brembo brakes and drilled brakes-- let’s “brake” it all down! Bart talks about the principles that make your brakes work. From drums and discs, to friction and heat, we get to the nitty gritty of how Brakes systems keep you safe.
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

Fast explanation: Brakes work by Braking without Breaking, if a Brake Breaks when it Brakes, it doesn´t Brake. If it´s too hot, it will take a Break from Braking.
SamtheCat imma take a break so I can think about this before I break my brain
Thank you
Thank you
imma take a break before i break my phone and continue braking my car without thinking about breaking the brakes which will remind me of this break I took now and prevented my self from breaking my phone after reading a tongue twister about how brakes can be broken, give me a break

Science garage on exhausts? Lots of content there!
what makes the different tones of exhaust,
what causes drone issues,
the Subaru "bark" explained,
exhaust cut outs,
screamer pipes,
muffler baffling,
resonators,
wtf catalytic converters do,
equal length headers,
the list could go on...
I agree soo much content on exhausts maybe even too much for just one episode :)
also automatic like for Science garage, put that thumbs up into (D) and floor it!

I simply love the sense of humor in this series.
Great video love the style and information. One of the reasons pizza tastes so much better from a restaurant is because their ovens can get so much hotter (700-800 degress isn't uncommon). 400 degrees F is nothing for a pizza oven and it wouldn't cook in 50 seconds.
Right, idk where they got that 400f can cook a pizza that fast info from. Guess none of them have made frozen pizzas before

Thank you guys, reading the Toyota Dealership repair manual for my 2000 Toyota Solara, wanting to change my brakes but didn't know what the other components were. I wrote in my notes, "Rotor connects to wheel, Caliper sits on rotor and squeezes the pads to stop." Also an entertaining video too 👏👏👏
The Wilhelm Scream for Wilhelm Maybach was absolutely perfect! You guys are the best channel on youtube right now
CONGRATS ON 600K
The surface area of the contact patch between the pads and rotors doesn't actually effect the friction force between them (common misconception) but helps with the cooling meaning better braking performance. Everything else was spot on though. Great video
Thank you guys! This video is helping me in my final exam!
Im studying automotive engineering btw

0:28 Man learn some grammer it is 'Kinetic'
They did that on purpose dude. Wew.
I tried to be first, but failed.
Please do more videos like this! This is so much better than "Engineering Explained" videos! In fact, you guys have much more accurate information.
4:15 Oh God that music
Great video that was informational and entertaining! Thank you!!
I don’t appreciate a lot of things, many that make life easy and better. I have to have a wake up call once in a while. Thanks for the video.
Ah I really would have liked to have seen ABS mentioned in here! Especially the fail safe feature if the ABS system has a problem. Not full detail, But some mentioning would have been cool! Still very informative and awesome! I know I'm a bit late but I was also late on discovering this channel so I'm making my way there!
Allow me to make a correction. The wheels have rotational momentum, velocity and energy. The brakes apply a force, also known as torque because this is rotation, and the direction of that Torque is negative, which according to Newton’s second law, the rotational acceleration of the brake - rotor - wheel system will be negative, thus reducing the rotational velocity to zero radians per second. If you wanted to think about it in terms of energy, the rotational
Kinetic energy of the brake - rotor system will turn to heat AND sound energy.
Dude you the best ! Great explanation, great videos. Fan from INDIA.

Besides that great series and another great video. You guys are awesome!
Such a well produced vid!
Love these! Maybe talk about how ABS works next?
The holes and slots in rotors are actually there to allow the gases from the pass to more easily release under braking to allow better surface contact and friction.
Bart's episodes are good
