    Your long cable had pin 20 live, it didn't meet displayport spec and was feeding voltage from the monitor back into the gpu keeping the system from fully powering off between power cycles and shorting the card when unplugged causing the system to crash.

    Anyone wondering what the issue is:
    I had the same issue before, the cheap cable I bought had the power pin connected (it's not supposed to be, and yes for some reason DP has a power pin) and the monitor is sending power back to my graphics card. I purposely damaged that single pin and now the cable works flawlessly.

    • @neoqueto
      @neoqueto Před 4 lety +92

      Spot on. It's the problematic 3.3v pin 20. With improperly designed cables that have it wired up, an effect known as backfeed can occur. And it can potentially even brick your entire graphics card. At best, it'll keep the RGB on while the PC is unplugged.

      @@beukenboomer604 Pin 20 in displayport is powered from both the gpu side and monitor side so that powered Converters or extender boxes can be powered from either end.
      When such a unit is connected, it accepts power only at one side and so you don't get backfeed along the entire setup.
      When pin 20 is active on a cable that just goes monitorgraphics card backfeed occurs, voltage can shortcircuit device on either end and cause all sorts of hell since they don't have the same phase variation on both sides.
      Lots of minidp to dp cables had the pin20 wired up too so you could easily fry that port on your laptop if you weren't careful.

      My PC "FuturePower branded" PC from 1999 I have 3 80mm fans in mine with two fan controllers with USB 3 and HD Audio, most of the fans reach around 2000RPM & the case sits around 100F playing Half-Life Alyx VR with a Gigabyte WINDFORCE Full-Sized Overclocked GTX 970 that fits with a whole millimeter to spare (so certainly not bad). Small case like that though I would def install high RPM fans 2000RPM+ though (Both rear and intake if possible) cooling OC components can be no joke and installing 120mm fans in a case like that is not easy without breaking out the metal grinder & and in some old cases may not be poss as the IO is too close to the fan shroud

    I started modding cases before this old case was made, so I can give advice on how it would have been modded in the early 2000s. Drill holes in the 3-1/2" bay covers, remove the filters, use higher velocity fans, fit a 96mm fan in the back, and cut intake fan holes in the side cover, using 80mm fans and those chrome wire grilles. You'll need a drill with a cone bit and a hole saw to pull it off. and some server fans. You'll see some decent numbers with cooling, but also the sound of an airliner taxiing whenever you turn it on.

    Get rid of the plastic front and build a 140mm fan into the curve. Use a bit of MDV wood to cover the rest of the front - worked for my 'old' case except I used the 5 1/4 bay areas.

    The case has an air intake hole in the front bottom part. I saw a fan mount in in inner front bottom part of the case. Should have mounted the fan there. Most generic and older cases take their air in the lower front all the time if not from the side (gpu lower and/or cpu higher). Alternatively, just put an exhaust fan in the back for negative pressure to breathe air in through the biggest hole -- the bottom front hole. (or tape the holes up as the PSU can exhaust)
    3:53 the bottom hole is even circular so you know it can only be ine thing -- a fan.

    I actually had problem years ago where I was using my shiny new 144Hz monitor trough DVI cable. Everything did work out fine, but there was like 10 games which were crashing on me for no apparent reason. This included games like Rayman Legends, where games 1.00 version and demo worked but latest patch did not. I changed the cable from DVI to DisplayPort cable and those games just started to work just fine.
    Literally everything else worked absolutely fine!

    i build a lot of sleeper pc's in the past few years, but i do it a step further, litterly all works, the cd drive, floppy , cardreaders, all in white, there are various of white cd drives with sata not new but you can find them at scrapyards for electronics or on ebay, and for the floppy there is a internal floppy to usb adapter available and white cardreaders are easy to find that covers all the holes up in the front of the case and they are functional otherwise i dont even start with it :)

    I had a very similar problem with a faulty displayport cable running some current unexpectedly. Caused a completely new budget build to boot loop whenever you tried to restart after updates or something. Always had to remove power cable and have the capacitors drain before I could ever achieve a successful boot. Also, the mainboard power led was always on! Whenever I'd put that build on my working table and connect my testing peripherals (some old small DELL monitor, simple mouse and keyboard etc) the problem would go away. At some point I was just as irritated and desperate as you were, running out of ideas. The peripherals used with that PC at its actual workspace were the only parts still differing from my test setup, so I plugged those peripherals in one by one. Once I'd connected that monitors displayport cable the mainbord power led would light up. Once I changed the displayport cable to one without those prongs keeping it in place it worked just fine. Apparently displayport cables with prongs/clamps are prone to cause damage to the displayport and thus running current that's not supposed to be. At least that's what some web research turned up. Does that make any sense? Can anyone confirm that?
