During the early to mid 70s I toured with the Red Dawn Indian Dancers as a performer. Most of it was in So. Cal. where we were based, but we also made occasional trips and performed around the SW US.
As to the film... um.. honestly don't even know where to start. It was a different world, and yet today it's mostly the same world. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I really thought I’d find a higher quality of people watching these films. Nope.

Amazing to think the old woman in the film is only probably two generations from traditional precontact native life: Neolithic tools and a heritage of 10000 years. What she has experienced in terms of change is unrivaled in history and probably will never be replicated.
Her grandparents lived a traditional life. It was in her living memory.

I was fortunate to meet and work with many Native Americans at a job I had some years ago. I was pleased to learn about their cultures, but horrified by how many were sent away to government run schools where many of their cultural aspects were beaten out of them.

I have recently visited Arizona (2023) and I was very sad because of the state of Navaho today. I've expected to see something that would remind me of what can be seen in this movie. However, the reality looks like a decline, loss of identity and strong nihilism.
