Text:
Come again: sweet love doth now invite,
Thy graces that refrain,
To do me due delight,
To see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die,
With thee again in sweetest sympathy.
Come again, that I may cease to mourn,
Through thy unkind disdain:
For now left and forlorn,
I sit, I sigh, I weep, I faint, I die,
In deadly pain and endless misery.
All the day that sun that lends me shine
By frowns doth cause me pine
And feeds me with delay:
Her smiles, my springs that make my joys to grow,
Her frowns, the winters of my woe.
All the night my sleep is full of dreams,
My eyes are full of streams,
My heart takes no delight
To see the fruits and joys that some do find,
And mark the storms to me assigned.
Out, alas, my faith is ever true,
Yet will she never rue,
Nor yield me any grace;
Her eyes of fire, her heart of flint is made,
Whom tears nor truth may once invade.
Gentle Love, draw forth thy wounding dart,
Thou canst not pierce her heart,
For I that to approve,
By sighs and tears more hot than are thy shafts,
did tempt, while she for triumph laughs.
Doch weh´ mir, meine Treue ist ewig, während es sie niemals gereuen, sie mir ihre Gunst niemals gewähren wird;

I never tire of this interpretation. It feels as if I am transported through history to Elizabethan times.
g dandrea So well said!!! 😃👍❤️
The bass is brillant and that while playing the lute masterfully. Wow!!
Thank you so much! Emma Kirkby will be joining us again in Munich on May 14, 2023, for a concert of Thomas Campion songs. See joelfrederiksen.com for more info!
What wonderful times we live in that we can experience such a fantastic performance at the touch of a screen! My sincerest thanks to Ensemble Phoenix Munich for posting this beautiful music.
Superb; exceeds my every expectation - I knew of Kirkby's brilliance, but Frederiksen is the most melodious bass I've ever heard.
Thank you very much, Jim! Sorry for the late reply:-)!
Extraordinary, she's living it. Accompaniment could not be more attentive
Yes! Emma is perfect!
Nicely theatrical version that captures the full genteel absurdity of the song.
Wow.. this is very different and very good
Wonderful to have a song from 1597 reach out and speak to me in 2015. Wonderful interpretation. Thank You.
what a touching, beautiful rendering of this old, so sweet and at the same time bitter song by Dowland. It seems such a typical song by this composer and I loved singing it - but this is simply amazing in its purity and sincerety. Wonderful playing too; the combination of accompaniment with my all-time (soprano) love Emma K & your fabulous bass are spinning me into this new day - thank you. Kiki
So wonderful and rich of expression!
👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Absolute magic! Emma still singing was well as ever, lovely bass too!
Love this. I remember studying this at university and it was one of my favourites.
beautiful voices. I don't know how many times have I listened to the song!
Incredible.
May you live long Mummy. I will not sleep if not listening to her voice at the background.
What a beautiful version!
Thank you, Jörg! It was so lovely singing with Emma!
Magnifique !
Merci!!
Beautiful voices and a sensitive accompaniment in a really vivid interpretation.
Great job! Love it.
Great😊❤
song comes right into the heart. voices are so touching
Exquisite!
Thank you! So happy that you were moved to comment. Best wishes, Joel
Yes, yes oh God yes! This is how to do Elizabethan madrigals. And the bass singer Michael Gondko is just magnificent, his voice has a very appealing tone that goes well with Emma. He is also a very accomplished lutenist as well.
This is so nice! Ms. Kirkby, lovely as always.
Vielen Dank, Klaus!
Fantastic. Early music is hard to bring to life at this level. Big fan of Emma here
Emma is an icon! She will be with us again to celebrate 20 years of EPM and the works of Thomas Campion in May 2023!
Superbe basse!
Thank you very much! Always a pleasure to perform Dowland songs. Take a look here for more: www.joelfrederiksen.com
Great also Joel Frederiksen, as a bass and lute player
Thank you, Luca! It's always great performing with Emma!!

Wonderful. This was a true ensemble performance; and what spirit!
I even burst into applause at the end.
I probably shouldn't have admitted that...
Thank you for the upload.

@@ensemblephoenixmunich2210 I have sing that theme with my chorus, difficult but beautiful!!
@@nesaro Yes, it’s beautiful and challenging! Congratulations for singing the works of John Dowland with your choir!!
Breathtaking interpretation! I'm looking forward to your concert in Prague in February, Joel!
To me, Emma Kirkby is legendary for her unique style of singing, a style I admire.
Never seen her 'live', it's an honour to me I do now.
Thank you.
Years ago I had the intense pleasure of seeing her and David Thompson in Handel's Acis and Galetea with Hogwood and his band. The warmup piece was the complete Water Music. Pretty close to heaven... This was shortly on the heels of their most famous Messiah.
Emma Kirkby & Phoenix Munich : ´´simply´´ unerring, outstanding Geniuses, and paramount performance
Thanks, Jorge! It was always wonderful to sing with Emma!
Absolutely agree - music in it's purest expression. The Baroque Period, the acoustic delieverence, the small imperfections - that's transcendence of music to me...
I'd kill to be present at this concert. Love this...
Wonderful!
Vielen Dank, Ulrich!
Emma is the queen.......
Emma is definitely the Queen!
Great Emma! You're always at the top of the top! Luca, the painter.
This year she will join us in Munich in May for a concert of lute songs by Thomas Campion: www.joelfrederiksen.com/en/calendar-input/2023/05campion
This is simply fantastic! What a great rendition and lovely performance! Thank you for posting!

just fiund this. So wonderful
Thank you, Jeremy!
Wunderschön, Danke dafür!
Vielen Dank! Sehr gerne!
Phenomenal performance. Just perfect.
Thank you, Mihai! Check out "Flow my teares" with Emma, as well.
Should be suggested to Sting!
Emma Kirkby is perfect as usual. And a special mention to the bass!!!
+Ensemble Phoenix Munich but this is The Way
+Maximilian Rothe there is no "the way" there are ways - I appreciate their unabsolutist statement. I prefer theri's to Sintg's anyway (that's fine on its own)
Sting may be suggested to stick to music he does well :)
OK, he is a musical legend, but for his own music, not Dowland.
I did song as part of an ensemble in University around the same time as sting murdered it. Pity.
beautiful
wonderful!
Awesome, beautiful and poetic interpretation of John Dowland's masterpiece! ;)
Very pleased that you enjoyed it! Joel and EPM
Superb!
Thank you, Greg!!

Wow!
... espetacular! Vozes poderosas e agradável melodia!
¡Gracias, William!
ENCHANTING!!!
Thank you, Elizabeth!
How to say what a wonderful music this is.. ?
Bravissimo Joel Frederiksen!
Thank you!
It has more verses than people realize!
Yes, it does!!
Why is it that even lutenist who sing all seem to be basses?
Seemed like a good idea at the time:-). Yours, Joel the bass...and lutenist
Lol
Emma Kirkby is truly in a league of her own. In this case, I prefer Sting's interpretation.
Wonderful!!!
Thank you, Ana!
