    Live concert "Masters of Song", Bavarian National Museum, Munich (Germany) February 21, 2013
    Ensemble Phoenix Munich with Dame Emma Kirkby
    Joel Frederiksen, lute, bass
    Emma Kirkby, soprano
    Text:
    Flow, my tears, fall from your springs!
    Exiled for ever, let me mourn;
    Where night's black bird her sad infamy sings,
    There let me live forlorn.
    Down vain lights, shine you no more!
    No nights are dark enough for those
    That in despair their lost fortunes deplore.
    Light doth but shame disclose.
    Never may my woes be relieved,
    Since pity is fled;
    And tears and sighs and groans my weary days
    Of all joys have deprived.
    From the highest spire of contentment
    My fortune is thrown;
    And fear and grief and pain for my deserts
    Are my hopes, since hope is gone.
    Hark! you shadows that in darkness dwell,
    Learn to contemn light
    Happy, happy they that in hell
    Feel not the world's despite.
    German:
    Fließt, meine Tränen, strömt hervor aus euren Quellen;
    verbannt bin ich für immer, drum lasst mich trauern;
    wo der schwarze Vogel der Nacht sein Klagelied singt,
    dort lasst mich mein einsames Leben fristen.
    Verlöscht, ihr eitlen Lichter, leuchtet mir nicht länger!
    Keine Nacht ist finster genug für jene,
    die voller Verzweiflung ihr verlornes Glück beweinen;
    das Licht enthüllt nur ihre Schmach.
    Nie wird meine Qual ein Ende finden,
    denn alles Mitleid ist dahin;
    und Tränen, Seufzer und Klagen
    haben meine öden Tage aller Freude beraubt.
    Vom höchsten Gipfel der Zufriedenheit
    stürzte mich das Schicksal hinab,
    und Furcht, Kummer und Leid sind mein Lohn,
    sind meine Hoffnung, wo es keine Hoffnung mehr gibt.
    Hört, ihr Schatten, die ihr im Dunkel lebt,
    lernt, das Licht zu verdammen.
    Glücklich all jene, die in der Hölle weilen
    und die Verachtung der Welt nicht spüren.
    Tone: Matthias Filus
    Video: Heinz Unruh

    Absolutely astonishing! I've loved the magnificent Emma Kirkby for years, and never thought I'd hear a voice that could upstage hers. But I just did. Congrats on a wonderful performance!

    Ich bin immer wieder hocherfreut, wenn ich wie hier Musik aus Räumen höre, für die sie gedacht war. So können Emma Kirkby und Joel Frederiksen mit sehr wandlungsfähiger, biegsamer und nuancenreicher Stimme singen, unterstützt nur von Frederiksens Lautenbegleitung, sodass sich ein sehr ausgewogenes Klangbild ergibt, dem zu lauschen die reine Freude ist und das mich ins Herz trifft. Verglichen mit anderen eine herausragende Interpretation!

    I believe I have played Dowland on the recorder, or at least was familiar with his work. Greatly enjoy Emma Kirkby's vocal technique and expression. Great bass, too! Absolutely love the time period Emma works in.

    "If music be the food of love, play on/ Give me excess of it, that surfeiting/ The appetite may sicken and so die. /That strain again! It had a dying fall/ O, it came o'er my ear like the sweet sound/ That breathes upon a bank of violets/ Stealing and giving odor." Twelfth Night, opening lines spoken by Orsino.

      How strange you should cite that. Listening to this music, I too ask myself if this is not exactly the music poor little bear (Orsino) is listening to. In this supreme comedy by the Earl of Oxford aka Shakespeare, did he know John Dowland?, relief from the pangs of despised love comes in the form of a strange and perky page called Cesario whose transformation restores the world to order and striken lovers to their place in the sun.

    I must say that seeing Mr Sherwood copying Chris Squire's bass, singing and movements is, well, creepy. Not healthy, in my opinion. What used to be thought of as progressive is now just repeating the past, for me.
