Land Cruiser Troopy Mods & Setup - "The Donkey"

  • After an unlucky turn of events in the Okavango Delta in 2016, we were stranded without a vehicle after drowning it at a river crossing that we had driven many times before but somehow this time got it all wrong.
    We had been looking for a Land Cruiser Troopy for quite some time before this stroke of misfortune and weren't able to actually find one. Strangely, within the same week of drowning our previous vehicle we were able to find and purchase the vehicle we had been looking for for so long, the Land Cruiser Troopy.
    Finally a dream becoming a reality we purchased the Troopy and started the long road of kitting it out. The Troopy came as a basic vehicle with a snorkel as an extra and nothing much else, we were starting from scratch.
    The way we have setup the vehicle is specific to how we travel and what we need. The extras added are completely purpose driven, having paid our school fees already with many other setups this one we seem to have gotten perfect for our needs.
    Take a tour of our Land Cruiser Troopy (aka "The Donkey") into how we have kitted him out. In this video we give you an inside look into how we have gone about setting it up for our overland travels. Everything we do in our vehicle is for convenience and quick setups and pack ups. There is nothing worse than arriving at a camp and having a lengthy battle with a tent or a chair thats somewhere in the back of your vehicle under large amounts of other unnecessary items.
    We need a setup that allows us to arrive at a camp, setup and have a cold beer in hand in less than a minute!

    I would suggest trowing on a Provent catch can & 2nd fuel filter with water trap. Other than that, that Troopy is looking like 🔥!

    Hallo, the barn doors 🚪have they ever sacked due to the extra weight on them, the spare wheel door with the frontrunner table in is the door though enough to handle the weight

    • @MyLifeinAfrica
      @MyLifeinAfrica  Před 3 lety

      Hi there Morris, yes they have sagged a little and you can feel the weight on the door, the Frontrunner table really doesn't weigh much but the heavy MT tyre does. I'd prefer to fit a bumper instead of having the weight on the door, something I am considering still...

      afraid the doors might sack, also considering replacement rear bumper but the extra weight 🤔, I suppose it is a cruiser and can handle it

      @MyLifeinAfrica  Před 3 lety

      yeah I mean they come like that stock, so we have to assume it can carry the weight...

    From Fortuner to Land Cruiser. Was this a cost or practicality based decision?

      Well, the fortuner came to an untimely end and at the time i was not sure if they were going to repair it. I'd been looking at b the 79 and 78 for a while and really wanted a 78 but struggled to find one. Strangely within the same week of drowning the fortuner my wife managed to find the 78 and i couldn't resist getting it... so here we are! 🤟🏻

    How is your motor holding up with the turbo? I have a 4.2 and seriously considering a turbo kit but unsure of a good reliable installer in Jhb or Durban?

    • @MyLifeinAfrica
      @MyLifeinAfrica  Před 3 lety

      Hey Renny, my motor is perfect to be honest. You need to make sure its a low pressure turbo and that it doesn't boost a lot. Also make sure you install an EGT and don't take the temp higher than 550°C. As far as I know it was done by Steve's Auto Clinic in JHB...

    Oh it's such a horrible feeling, drowning a car. I have been lucky to not drown any of my cars but have helped a few people who have and there are no words. I have come close a couple of times, but luck and a lack of computers/electronics saved me. Still you had a good outcome since now you have an awesome vehicle. Now i am going to finish watching
