Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

fr how is nobody talking about how clueless bolsa was for the entire series, gus weaves an elaborate web around the cartel and picks off the salamancas one by one right in front of bolsa and he's convinced "oh gus is all business" the whole time, and when he finally says "gus, iunno man, you're seeming kinda sus, when the heat from this dies down i might start to investigate you" he gets shot. i dont know if this is a testament to gus's genius or bolsa's stupidity.

There's a 0% chance Gus has kids, maybe back when he lived in Chile he had kids with someone but then met Max and fled the country, or met Max later on after he escaped but that was just an appeal to Walt as a father. I think he's definitely gay, the wine scene in better call saul was to explicitly show that he won't allow himself to ever form those kinds of attachments while he does what he does. Maybe if he had lived out the series and retired then he would have at least tried again to let himself find happiness with someone.

It's really interesting that there is Gus' connection to Chile and also a connection to Germany. It's also a fact that a large number of Germans emigrated to South America at the end of WW2, some to escape prosecution, and some to escape persecution from the Allies, especially Russia. There are still large populations of Germans and many German dominated settlements in South America today, primarily in Peru and Chile. In fact, I would be shocked if Gus did not have German blood flowing through his veins. After all Fring is a German surname. 🤯

I think as much as we'll get was that he was a General of some description in the Pinochet regime. Bolsa to Lalo in BCS: "He will never be one of us..."
Bolsa to Gus in BB (in reference to the Salamancas): "These people are not like us..."
I really like how these two lines contrast and show how Bolsa just completely bought into Gus's businessman persona and even seems to feel a bit of camaraderie with him based on their shared professionalism.
He likes to brush it off as Gus just being a valuable asset to the cartel, but it's clear that he actually likes him and how he seemingly stays out of trouble and makes money, unlike those pesky Salamancas who he has to constantly clean up after because of their shared craziness.
