Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Anyone who's watched BB before this understands those high up in the Cartel business have so much money, that they can't spend it all(both from excess and legally). That's what makes Gus's chicken operation so brilliant. It allows a lot of that cash to be laundered and at the same time, as bases for distributing drugs/other products. Money is simply a tool for a more important thing the cartel desires: Power.

I love how Lalo is still a man of honor. When Jimmy initially turns it down, Lalo stands up, it's a subtle way of using his position to slightly intimidate Jimmy into persuasion, but he alleviates that tension immediately with his charisma, by opening his arms palms out and smiling and positively reinforcing Jimmy's talent. It's a nice little mind trick of playing on Jimmy's ego. But then when Jimmy starts talking price, Lalo sits back down and goes more on the attentive side, another way of alleviating the tension, implying that he's listening and open to negotiation. I love that they wrote him more as a calculating manipulator rather than just relying on intimidation.

He starts off singing the same way he did for Nacho but as soon as Saul mentioned Tuco and his “Abuelita,” that was the nail in the coffin. Lalo was like “Sympathy and humor. That’s his poker face. Its amazing that a homicidal psychopath like Lalo was more appreciative of Saul's talents than Walt, who looked down his nose at him.

    That shot was SOOOOO GOOD
The transition from his face in the mirror all lit up and his cheerful expression to his actual face in the dark with a more serious expression really hit me like a truck.
I will admit I haven't watched BCS but just by watching this scene I feel like I went through a whole introduction of Lalo just from those few seconds. Just goes to show what good writing, directing, and acting can do for a show.
Definitely going to watch BCS 👍👍

Saul was an extremely gifted lawyer who talked Tuco down from skinning alive two guys who insulted his grandmother and tried to scam him. It would not do JUST to scare him when his he provides such good service.

@@Watcherofprovidence that’s actually a really good point. I hadn’t thought about that before. The thing about the scene for me the first time I saw it was that we knew Lalo as a bloodthirsty psychopath who isn’t afraid to kill before who get in his way and Jimmy as a goofball who has been terrified by the cartel before, yet Lalo is so willing to pay Jimmy when he casually gives the price for his services. It was that dichotomy that made the scene so shocking and hilarious 😂
