Joe....A buddy of mine would always talk about how amazing the writing was. I still think that BCS was better written than BB.
@@tommyd1871 Breaking Bad had the better overall story, but I think what you're noticing is just how much more refined BCS is. The production is better, the characters are much more refined (contrast to BB where some characters were introduced and written on the fly).
BCS had the privilege of knowing where it was going the whole time whereas BB didn't.
Whichever you think is the better show mostly depends on what you hold higher in regard. Story and suspense, or production.
John Posey also did an excellent job with this scene.
It's a better show. BB was comically over the top sometimes. Especially Walters performance. Not to mention that wife.
Far more enjoyable to watch a couple mutually enjoy the crime than have the wife be the most annoying antagonist in TV history.

But yeah, his performance as the mediator was amazing. The outrage and anger in his expression was perfect.

They probably spent a lot of time trying to schedule this, so it’s understandable he’s irritated.
This is one of the best episodes in all Breaking Bad universe but, at the same time, is so uncomfortable to watch. Howard didn't deserve none of this.

I love this scene. It is a hard-earned lesson that you should NEVER throw all in without checking your cards. He should have said, "Please excuse me for a moment. It won't take long. I apologize." Then, he should go to his office, retrieve the photographs, check them again, and show them to the judge FIRST. Then, give the speech. Evidence first, conclusion second.
I've seen this happen in court often (in a much less dramatic way, but similar)
True, but Howard also knows if he lets Jimmy continue a scheme it’ll unfold exactly how he wants it like in “Chicanery” so he felt like he needed to stop it dead in its tracks.
Howard was under the false assumption that he was the one who had the upper hand.
He thought he knew what Jimmy's scheme was, so he was caught flat-footed.

Anyone who started feeling bad toward Kim should be reminded of this scene of her constantly smiling and laughing at Howard. He was spot on, those two get off on making people suffer.

Don't totally disagree with you. But I perceive her joy deriving mainly from the smooth execution of a cleverly conceived and worked on plan. For all they put into it it wasn't guaranteed to succeed. There was a lot of moving parts. Jimmy and Kim looked anxious at first. As it became apparent that the plan was truly and completely working they were relieved and elated. For all her many faults I don't think Kim had a sadistic or cruel dimension. You could say she lacked empathy, responsibility and a working moral compass. But causing pain in others wasn't her motivation. That's just my opinion anyway.
Apparently the opening speech the mediator made is standard issue to all mediators I just went through mediation for a civil case and I swear our mediator introduced himself the same way damn near word for word

The extremely high tension in this scene is astonishing considering how relatively low the stakes are. The fruits of great character development.
That's the genius of this show in a nutshell. It's not *always* going to be a cartel dude holding your life in his hands. Sometimes it's a cupholder that doesn't fit your favorite mug. But it still feels intense.
I love how Saul is looking directly at the camera while handing off the frisbee with a face that says "why is this random person taking pictures of me?"
Making Howard look all the crazier.
It's kind of like he's looking at Howard and asking, "are these the pictures you were expecting?"
"Well I'm looking forward to that" in other words, the mediator is looking forward to seeing how wrong he was

It was 2004 my guy not 1933, 20k then would be about 33k now. Like yeah, for a regular guy making the median income that's a big difference, but it's not like 20k would be worth 300k today.

how much do you think the guy was being paid to be a supposedly impartial mediator in these proceedings? less than $20K. yes, if he got busted this particular time it would not have been worth it but the whole idea is you solicit bribes on a regular basis, not just once.

Let's not forget two bits of additional context that made Cliff completely distrust Howard (not to mention the planted coke, strippers (at the restaurant and the one thrown from his car)), but his son was an addict and in the scene before this he was talking about how he was a friend to Judge Casamiro for many years, so he knew this wasn't something he'd do

It's funny how Chuck's portrait is overlooking the whole scene. This was Howard's "battery" moment.
Good job by the actor playing the judge. He went from mild confusion to cold anger as the scene progressed.
A normally mundane legal proceeding interrupted by absurd out of left field accusations however the reactions and dialogue remain believable and grounded in reality - brilliant writing.
Such a shame seeing such a talented lawyer give himself over to addiction like this. I hope he gets help soon.

4:40 Oh wow. His eyes were actually dilated. Look at how he grabs the wheelchair handle for support, then stumbles around the room upon exit. I can tell that's real, because I'm just old enough to have gone to the Optometrist back when they used to dilate the eyes every single time you went for a routine checkup. Your vision would be insanely blurry for hours, and you'd stumble around like a blind man. Now that's attention to detail that I can truly be impressed with.

You know what is the worst thing in that whole situation? The mediator, judge Casimiro was actually right. The compromise WAS the best option for all the parties.
The elderly people didn't need billions dollars as the compensation, just the refund and some extra money. What they needed was to get their money as soon as possible so that they could enjoy life and their money during the few years that were left to them.
Also, while the big portrait of Chuck is hunging behind judge Casimiro, what the mediator proposes here, is the exact opposite of Chuck's personal philosophy i.e. the winner takes it all.
What the judge is saying is that you don't need to take it all, you need to compromise. And that's something neither Jimmy nor Kim were capable of, possibly, because they learned it from Chuck.
The loser's standing small
This is like an interrogation in LA Noire where you just doubt and accuse the suspect of lying with zero evidence, and seem gradually more and more unhinged.
I never quite understood why Kim wanted to nail Howard to such an extreme degree. It's one thing to humiliate him as payback for their past friction, but she wanted to completely destroy his life.
Howard got done so dirty for no reason in this show. I'm glad Jimmy and Kim eventually owned up to it.
