  • This week's furniture paint project will probably sparked a lively debate: to paint or not to paint, that is the question?
For the past five years, I've cherished this beautiful Victorian washstand in my home. However, I hesitated to showcase it on my CZcams channel because I know there are passionate supporters of preserving original Victorian furniture in its untouched state. The love for showcasing the natural wood and its intricate grain is undeniable. It was indeed a tough decision, but I'm thrilled that I finally decided to feature it on my channel.
If you follow the tutorial, you'll understand my reasoning behind the painting of this piece. Now, it will return to its rightful place in my home, seamlessly blending into the beautifully decorated room scape. The entire project involved a significant amount of restoration and fixes, including using leftover chalk Paint from previous color mixes. I wish I could recall the exact shade, but trust me, it looks utterly divine!
Make sure to mark your calendars for the live premiere on CZcams, happening at the usual time and place. Let's dive into the intricacies of this furniture transformation together!

I get upset when people get judgmental about paint vs stain. You are the artist. It's for you or your market. You get to choose. It's lovely!

You have a great eye for choosing pieces that have "good bones", and loads of potential... then you just do your magic paint thing, and voila! A blush pink jewel.
    It's wonderful to watch!

So beautiful - if people are distressed about painted furniture they shouldn’t watch a painted furniture artist’s channel - it’s not like the wood is gone - your art is lovely and brings joy

From a forever Wisconsin fan, you are a true amazing artist, you have God gifted hands.i saw my parents growing up make furniture out of anything they could salvage and it was stunning, I came from a family of artists and you gave inspired me more than anyone else, your style is glorious, and your voice is soothing! I watch you morning, evening, every chance I get and am now recreating a smaller table close to one of yours previously. You gave me a new creative goal. God bless you and your lovely home, partner and your beauty shines outwardly. Blessings !! Sophia

I think there is a time for painting furniture! If u have a rare or expensive or burl beautiful wood, then NO. If u have an inexpensive, damaged or flawed piece then YES use paint, glaze or stain!!!

Before even seeing the end result I'm voting for painting it. I used to be a purist about antique furniture, but I'm now happy to slap paint on anything that needs it. I bought an Australian Cedar chest of drawers from 1880 because I love the timber and it was beautifully made. The catch? It was painted white. Perhaps one day I'll strip it because Australian Cedar is a beautiful rich timber, but I'll leave it for now. Now I've seen the end result. You've proven that painting it was the perfect choice.

Love the paint job. Love the trim on the back legs. Good idea. I have a compulsion to put a marble medallion on the back splash. As an alternative you could have put a electronics outlet in the hole on the middle of the marble. Leaving the wood on the legs might have been interesting as well. Nice work

Johnathan, the cream 20 volume peroxide applied with cling wrap over (to keep it liquid long as possible) then put into the sun would take the stain out, no soda. It works especially well on yellowed plastic like an exhaust fan cover. The ultra violet rays work with the peroxide to bleach out the yellow of the plastic to white. This could have made the marble look completely new though.
I would have gone over the the marble with mineral spirits first to remove any old wax, as I think it is one of the few things that will cut wax. Not sure though. It really is loverly.

Jonathon, i think it was thoughtful and educational how you explained your choice in painting this table. As stated in another comment, there are certainly wood "purists". You may have opened some eyes to the beauty of painting wood?!?? However, the table belongs to you. And with your talent it would be shameful not to give this piece a new look and what a look it is!!! Simply gorgeous. Your design intuition is always spot on, not the least in this case. Adding the trim to the back legs was so impactful. I'm grateful for this tutorial....you have been missed. Forever a fan.....😊❤

    @shirleykathan-sayess5764 Před 3 měsíci +4

Jonathon, I don’t think you need to give any reasons to justify painting anything! The “purists” are rigid and need to get a life! Not everyone wants to live with color brown. Even the pyramids were painted, not the stone color we see today. Different people like different looks and they need to get over it.
I’ll get off my soap box, now. The pediment is perfect. The detail on the back supports is just what was needed. As they were, they looked to me like a poor repair to the original piece due to damage.
The finished piece is stunning! I love everything you paint! If you think it should be painted, go for it.
    ❤ Shirley

#replay You do the most incredible work, not just the gorgeous painting and patinas but also the way you fix and construct different missing elements to pieces. This is not the first time I've seen you make additions to pieces where they seemed to be missing and you always end up with such a cohesive and natural looking finished product. It's a gift! May I ask, do you happen to remember what your mixture was for your dusty pink??? It is stunning! And almost seems to have a coral tone incorporated... I'd love to try to mix something like this!
