I'll always remember the Godzilla vs The Thing poster. I first saw it on a Godzilla website during the time Sony and Tristar had distribution rights to the series following the 98 movie's release. They had all the Godzilla movies released at the time in order on the site, but they were all listed with their American titles. I hadn't seen Mothra vs Godzilla yet, so seeing this poster got me excited because yea it got me. I was like" What is The Thing? I wanna see Godzilla fight whatever this thing is." Granted the page on Mothra vs Godzilla had promotional pictures with Mothra, but I thought maybe she was in it along with The Thing, not realizing they are calling her the thing. Of course, years later, I would get Mothra vs Godzilla and learn that it was just America's way of promoting the film. But yea I fell for that poster as a kid. I still really like that poster tho and Mothra vs Godzilla is one of my favorite Godzilla movies lol.

That AIP GODZILLA VS. THE THING poster is one of the coolest pieces of promotional art in the history of cinema. Yes, it's absolutely false advertising. But in terms of hype, it doesn't get better than a tentacled monster "censored" because it's just too terrifying to show. And in fairness, an awful lot of US filmgoers at the time had probably never seen nor heard of Mothra anyway, so it makes perfect sense to hype Godzilla's foe up as something all-new and terrifying.

Even more insulting the German poster credits direction to the guy who directed the US insert scenes totally removing Ishiro Honda's name from the poster. And then the Italian poster to Destroy All Monsters , I don't remember there being any western actors by the name of Gary Graham or Kenny Lousen in that movie and Andrew Hughes (who played the minor part of Dr. Stevenson) is credited as lead actor. And the Italian poster for Terror of MechaGodzilla credits some more western actors that don't appear in the movie like "Harris Bartley" and "Alan Baker" and "Mood Stanley"? They still credit the three actual Japanese stars to the movie but shove in all these not featured Western names.

Huh, I think the poster at 6:06 or so, "The Return of King Kong" must have been the image I saw in this old documentary about monster movies almost 3 decades ago. Always struck in hindsight weird that they had a smaller "T-Rex" apparently shooting out fire out of its mouth and didn't think it had that much to do with Godzilla, just a rexie doin' that on bigger Kong. Guess that tells how well those posters worked. The documentary also had remarking how Kong is the American smart ape and Godzilla the moronic Japanese lizard. Either way, an old mystery that I didn't think that much about solved.

The saw king Kong VS godzilla and decided to put him on just godzilla movies lol. Also on 2 of the posters it looked like they made a mix between Kong and godzilla

8:55 That poster probably stems from the fact that originally, Ebirah: Horror of the Deep/Godzilla vs The Sea Monsters was originally supposed to be a King Kong movie, but Toho lost the rights to him halfway through production. Which is why Godzilla acts the way he does in that movie to begin with.

      They didn't loose the rigths
Rather they where making an adaptation of the Kong cartoon, and Rankinbass said the script was nothing like the cartoon, so they made KingKong Escapes
Toho then reused the idea replacing Kong witg Godzilla

Honestly I'm wondering how well known Godzilla was in Italy at the time and how much of that was due to posters always advertising Godzilla movies as King Kong movies.

I never realised how much other countries didn't give a fuck about godzilla movies in the 60s-70s. Legit they either posted of kong or frankenstien. I'm just glad the 80s stopped that trend forever

Also why does almost every poster with King Kong on it, it always look like kongzilla (this was from a comic it was a fusion between you now how)

The Godzilla vs the Thing poster portrays Mothra as an abomination alien thing. I still don't know why do classic monster movie posters get the creatures wrong

EUH ... The use of King Kong name and picture to promote a Godzilla movie, and i thought using Frankenstein doing the same thing was bad ....
