I miss VHS cover art in general. It was so much fun to walk into a video store and look at the box art. I guess spectacular and colorful cover art has been responsible for a lot of crappy movies being rented because the cover made the movie look a lot better than it actually was.
If only streaming could have killed the mockbuster. jk

Same thing happened with games back in the day.
There actually is a reason why Godzilla vs Megalon was so common. It was wrongly believed to be in the public domain for a long time. Which led to all sorts of shit like this. In fact, back when Rhino had the rights to distribute Mystery Science Theater 3000. They got in hot water with Toho for releasing the Godzilla vs Megalon episode.
The U.S. versions of "Godzilla on Monster Island", "Godzilla vs. Megalon", and "Godzilla vs. the Cosmic Monster" are in public domain. However, Godzilla and Megalon, registered trademarks of Toho, are, of course, not. Toho owns the rights to the Japanese and international versions, but not the U.S. versions. If you had an original U.S. version print of these three movies, you could show it, but you could not use Toho's trademarked characters in the advertising. Toho might try to come after you, but you'd beat them in a court of law. Using the name of Toho characters is what got Rhino in trouble. If they had called it by some other title, Toho couldn't have legally done anything to them.

I agree. While the concept might not have aged well the in our timeline, the image of two kaiju going toe-to-toe atop of them would have made for such a spectacle.
It's a shame it was never used in a King Kong remake or something.
This is taking me back from way way back over at the Hollywood store, I used to be infatuated with looking at all the vhs cover art and how goofy or cool. I miss having to do that just from looking at this tbh. I guess it’s nostalgia talking.
UAV and Goodtimes is the reason I had this movie twice. Parents thought the UAV was a sequel because of the city in the background

This was fun! I enjoyed the rapid-fire riffing and it was really interesting to see all the odd takes people have done on the covers over the years. Would definitely watch more with this sort of format!
Actually love this idea! The art of movie and book covers have been lost in the ruins of the 1980s due to the dark terror of reaganomics.
All book covers are now simply black squiggly lines over a soothing color and movie posters and covers are simply the cast looking either at the camera or off in the distance.
Next one should be Godzilla vs Gigan.

I wish someone would make a book about all these old Godzilla VHS Covers, maybe they could track down and do some interviews with the People who did the art for these cover's. I Would Assume alot of these artists never actually saw the movie they were doing the cover art for.
I remember when I young, I had a VHS of Mothra vs Godzilla, and it started with a clip show of Godzilla movies with Blue Oyster Cult Godzilla playing in the background. I could never find another copy, who made it, or anybody talking about it online. Its properly going to be mystery forever for me.

2:15 this VHS copy and the Goodtimes Double Feature copy were both available to rent at the old video store close to my childhood home. But what the store did with some of the videos is cut the front, back, and one side of the VHS covers so they could be put in thick plastic covers (kind of like what Blockbuster did with their movies).
The uav looks awesome! When I was a kid I loved the art on the ones with what looked like the Japanese flag on the back, the artist did amazing work on those! I too miss the days of traditional art on home media
I got the GoodTimes poster art VHS copy from my local pawn shop when I was about 6 or 7. Love that cover.

i watched "Godzilla vs. Megalon" on The Criterion Collection Blu-ray with My Little Brother on Summer 2020 and it's My Favorite Godzilla Showa era films in 1970's and i loved it! also Box Art/Cover/Artwork look petty cool better than Lots a Crappy Public Domain VHS Covers.

Ah, the Good Times release of this movie makes me feel warm and fuzzy when I see it. Right before the sadness train hits. That was the first Godzilla movie on VHS I ever owned, and my grandfather gave it to me when I was in Kindergarten. Thanks, gramps Filthy. I miss ya down here ten years later.

No joke, that Blu-Ray cover looks awesome in an utterly insane way.
Ooh, I still have my Godzilla vs Megalon vhs from back in the day! It has the same “deep-fried Godzilla” and derpy Megalon art as the one at 04:30 ! The tape itself doesn’t work anymore due to moisture damage, but the sleeve is still in surprisingly great shape. I have fond memories of digging this one out and watching it on summer vacation.
I had the one where they're shaking hands. Got it at the grocery store; it was so much fun finding random VHS tapes in random places back in the day
The VHS cover by GoodTimes was my first encounter with this movie at an old video renting store in town. It’s no longer there but wow, looking at the cover bought me back.

4:55 The reason it has Godzilla and Megalon on the Twin Towers was either because the poster was probably made after King Kong (1976), or to promote King Kong (1976).

My first copy was the Good Times poster one. It came with a a blank sticker label so you could write the title of the movie and stick it to the VHS tape because they didn't even bother to print any kind of label for it.
I cant remember what made me comeback to your channel but I think it was this core memory and it was Godzilla playing cards with Rodan
I hope you do more of these. My family and I used to have most of the Godzilla films up until Godzilla 2000 on VHS and some of the art or pictures on the covers are hilarious.

i still have all my vhs taps some more beat up then others cause i was a crazy young godzilla fan. but out the cases you showed off i would have to say i like the goodtimes vhs cover the most for godzilla vs megalon. while i do not own a single vhs copy of the movie i do believe on one of my two tape double feature godzilla vhs sets i own it shows the goodtimes cover for godzilla vs megalon

I just got the German DVD of godzilla vs Megalon, and that has pretty good artwork with Godzilla, Jet Jaguar, Megalon and Gigan on a firey and lightning covered background, and they actually look they way they do in the film.

My favorite is the first cover that’s yellow with Godzilla and Mecha Godzilla because this cover was the most common in video stores I visited
I got the Star Classics VHS one Christmas morning as a kid back in the early 80s and lost my damn mind. I also questioned why Mecha Godzilla was on the cover of it. I wore that tape out....LOL!
The thing that really jerks my chain about a lot of these VCR covers is you can tell the attitude that went into them was "meh, just slap pics of monsters on it, the kids won't care." That is wicked aggravating.

Yo....I have Godzilla vs Megalon VHS cover with the Pirate Logo. So nostalgia and yet so on point on these covers. Thank you for doing that MIB. Maybe do the others ones as well when you have a chance or if you can find them.
Here in the UK the VHS cover had a red out lined silhouette of godzillas head against a black scaly skin backdrop. Though on the up side the UK VHS release of the film had the uncut version of the English dub.
I think my favorite Vs Megalon vhs cover is the Front Row video release. Its the first Godzilla cover I ever saw, back when Hollywood Video was a thing (I was either 4 or 5). It may not be the best cover, but it's the one that started my love of Kaiju and Tokusatsu in general.
I actually got the Destroy All Monsters VHS for Christmas and it was the pure white VHS tape with that really kick ass art of Godzilla and all the monsters you see on the left side (0:02) at the beginning of the video. Also please do more of these!

The very first VHS tape I owned was the GvsMegalon/Snow Creature double feature (well, one of the first, I got 5 vhs tapes that Christmas). By no means the best cover on this list, it's still my favorite for sentimental reasons.
I’m a bit too young to have known the golden age of video stores myself, but I love VHS covers so much. I want to collect some VHS tapes of my favorite movies just cause they look so cool.

I had that Godzilla vs Megalon/Snow Creature VHS when I grew up. Watched it so much. So much that eventually the VCR chewed it up one day :( Man, I don't miss those days when your technology just ups and one day decides to eat your movie and destroys it :/

"Godzilla vs. Megalon" does feature Godzilla unknowingly fighting for the continued proliferation of atomic testing. Fukuda did write a line in the script (which made it into the manga adaptation) where Goro mentioned that it was ironic that Godzilla was born from atomic tests and fought off a threat that wanted them to stop.
Another scripted but unused scene had Emperor Antonio stop and ponder if he was no better than those that had destroyed his country with atomic tests by sending Megalon to the surface.

I owned the double feature VHS with The Snow Creature as a kid.
I have the Front Row Entertainment cover, which squeezes tinier versions of all three other monsters around an extra giant Godzilla in the same shot. You can justify it for flying Jet Jaguar, Megalon and Gigan not so much, let alone the scale of the buildings which actually implies Godzilla is the odd one out. Otherwise the screenshot blending is fairly creative and depicts the monsters accurately, save for some green colorization added to Godzilla. Maybe a solid B or B+
Also, thank you, because of this video I realized I have the StarMaker covers for both GTTHM and vs. Mechagodzilla, and I just lined the sides up next to each other for the first time in the ~20 years I've had them without ever knowing they could do that.
A great video! But MIB don't forget the female dancers of Seatopia! Their appearance was not edited out on most VHS releases.
Bruh this reminds me of this dream I had where I went to my grandma's house and this one drawer that I've never looked inside before had a VHS tape titled "Ultraman in: Cry of the Mummy! And Other Adventures" and it had this awesome cover art of Ultraman beating up the monster from that episode (I think it's name was Hydra) as well as the mummy ape man thing grabbing a scientist in a choke hold and lazer-eyeing him. I put the tape in the VCR in my room and I saw the Turner Home Entertainment logo, then I woke up.
My favorite Godzilla vs Megalon poster is the one where they used the 1965 Godzilla in the poster and it had a trippy background with the Kaijus names in Japanese on little bars next to them.
MIB should do a video in parts about ALL of the Godzilla VHS art!!

It's a shame you didn't look upon the foreign VHS covers like from Germany. It's funny how they were more accurate to the movies than the US ones..
i love how despite being the wrong film, more than one vhs art makers had mechagodzilla on the vhs covers, and I'm betting people would be confused as hell when they watched the film and didn't see mechagodzilla on it, and it would be even more funny if it came out before the film with mechagodzilla actually in it
I have a Star Classics video of public domain Looney Tunes shorts from the 30's with a similar cover, just white instead of yellow. And it did feature at least period accurate Looney Tunes box art. I think it had the same stock art of the silhouette audience looking uninterested.

Godzilla vs megalon was actually I think my first Godzilla film I ever saw at age 3 or 4. It wasn’t the uncut English dub one it was re edit in 1986. The one that cut the noodie mags out in the kidnappers truck!
