    I got an order for a twin turbo car. This is the welding process I do on intercoolers.
    I built this out of 5052 aluminum and welded it using 3/32" 5356 filler. I used 3/32" Lanthanated tungsten. my settings were 90 hz and 71% on the balance for the outside corners, and 200 hz for the fillets.

    You have decent exposure on your video. If you want tighter arc shots. Try a macro lens. With a macro lens the tungsten would fill more of the screen and you could see the puddle. You got the exposure nailed and with a macro lens you would be making money shots. Also did you know Space X is hiring TIG welders to work on the new space ships? Elon Musk does not care if you went to school. He cares about results. You got real talent👍

    • @5thStreetFab
      @5thStreetFab  Před 4 lety

    • @radishfever
      @radishfever Před 4 lety

      @@5thStreetFab Damn, that's too bad about Space X. It would be a big deal to relocate. have they seen your work? Elon Musk might make an exception for you. If you buy a macro lens. Make sure you understand working distance before you buy. You are going to want a lens that is macro and has a long working distance. If not your lens will melt from the heat. Also if you are using a hood for a shade. Try buying a 15 stop Neutral Density filter. Break Trough Photography makes really good ND filters that do not have any color cast.

    • @5thStreetFab
      @5thStreetFab  Před 4 lety

    Well, after watching the video to the end .... AND reading the description ....
    Now i know for sure it was 5356
    2:02 see the green flame every time you dip rod into the puddle ? That is 5000 series ( most likely 5356 ) with high magnesium content for you....
    I would have picked something with less than 3% magnesium for that intercooler, seeing it gets a lot of heat 150F+ and a fair share of vibration.... and “hot cracking” may or may not be an issue .....
    Now wait and see how much youtube hate i get for this comment .....
    Lol
    Excellent craftsmanship though !!!!!
    Half way through the video it looks like 4000 series wire ( either 4043 or 4943 ) i couldn’t see any green in those arcs ....

    Why do people keep using 5356 in intercooler/piping fabrication? It's prone to cracking in this environment, especially on the hot side where compressor outlet temps can reach +300°f depending upon turbo efficiency.

    • @5thStreetFab
      @5thStreetFab  Před 4 lety +1

      I thought the same thing. All my buddies that build them use 5356. I was tempted to use 4943 but didn't know if I had enough. Next one will be 4943. At work we build a lot of piping like high pressure water lines and muffler systems for boats. We use 5356 because of the corrosion resistance but never had them crack out even on the exhaust systems. So I'm not that worried.

    • @alantran6901
      @alantran6901 Před 4 lety

      @@5thStreetFab I don't know anything about the marine environment. However, in a automotive one, it's not just the heat. It's the combination of multiple heating/cooling and pressure cycles just from driving normal to aggressive, back to normal in a short period of time. It's that constant thermal cycling and flexing that's the issue.
      I've seen cracking issues more so on high boost 4 cylinder engine vs v6/v8 as they usually don't need to run such high pressure ratios.
      You do great work. I'm not knocking it. I've just always wondered why I see people using 5356 is this application. What's worst is someone on CZcams built an oil cooler using 5653. To me that's asking for trouble.
