Australian pop diva Gina G represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, Norway, in 1996.
The song may have placed 8th on the night, but it went on to become a global smash hit. Ooh Aah peaked at #1 on the UK Singles Chart and was also successful around Europe and in the United States, where it reached the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance Recording category in 1998.
Her debut album 'Fresh!' was filled with hit singles including 'I Belong To You' and 'Ti Amo'. In 2005, Gina G attempted to represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest again with her song 'Flashback', but this wasn't to be and the UK voted for Javine Hylton instead.
The iconic outfit Gina wore in Oslo was custom made by Paco Rabanne for Cher, who was living in Wapping at the time. For whatever reason, the 'Believe' hitmaker had cast aside the glittering garment one afternoon at the Warner Bros offices, where Ms G later stumbled across it hanging up just days before the contest. She stuffed it into her handbag and the rest is history.

Watching this again after 27 years makes me realise what a great pop song this is! Should have won it. But it was a worldwide hit so I guess Gina G cracked it anyway!
Fun fact - during this era any instrument featured on a song had to be featured on stage somewhere, which is why there’s a computer on the table next to the keyboard

That so interesting- when did this rule end? Did it start after the transition from orchestra instrumentals?
@@Youreonlymassive in 1998 they made it optional to use the orchestra, and in 1999 they removed any and all live instruments, effectively changing the rule so that all instruments on stage are only mimic-played

This was big in North America and yet still no one here had a clue what ESC was. Iconic!
I remember hearing this on the radio a lot as a kid (I’m from and still live in Florida). It wasn’t until many years later, after I’d gotten into Eurovision on my own, that I learned that this was actually a Eurovision song.
It almost reached the Top 10 in the U.S., and in a time when Eurodance was really popular on American pop radio, this was a certified bop.
I'm from the UK and was on holiday in the US in the late 90s. I was astounded that this came on the radio...and the Americans knew and loved it!!!

It’s a really good remaster too. You can see at 0:25 they’ve re-drawn the graphics. Find another upload of the song and you’ll see it’s actually slightly out of frame due to the weird letterboxed format used only in 1996.

@@tinan2179 Yes, she is flat, and the choreography is just a little too vigorous so she is also a little out of breath by the end. Gina G has the last laugh though as the song lives on, playing the same role in respect to the year 1996 as say "Blockbuster" by The Sweet does to the year 1973. It just sums up its pop moment perfectly.
I am from the UK and I had been watching the show for a few years before (1993) but it was this song that I first got behind.
There will never be a better UK entry than this.

To be fair, her singing her is "just a little bit" off-key. That's fine, and all, but it will have affected the scoring. And as Simmon said, we won with Katrina and the Waves the very next year (with a song that didn't, but deserved to, chart in the US, and a much stronger live performance).
I remember how huge this was in the UK at the time. I was 16 and going through my final high school exams. The summer was stunning and this song was EVERYWHERE! As an avid chart listener back then, this didn't shift out of the top 5 for a couple of months and I was so happy that she scored a UK number 1 when everyone got behind the song.
The fact this charted so high on the US Billboard charts surprised me at the time. I distinctly remember she was being hailed as the new 'Madonna' 😂.
She had some decent follow up singles with 'I Belong To You', 'Fresh', 'Gimme Some Love' & 'Ti Amo', but 'Just A Little Bit' is the most iconic and worthy of being performed on the Eurovision stage at Liverpool.
Yup,and back in the 70s,it wasn't uncommon for Eurovision artists to do versions of their ESC songs in other languages for mass appeal. Latin America was especially receptive to Spanish (of course),French, Italian and British artists (if I'm not mistaken,1979's Spanish singer,Betty Missiego,was actually Peruvian). But yeah,Gina G was all over the radio in New York with this song,and later on with "Gimme Some Love". I still have that song on cassette laying around somewhere,and I have it on a couple of my Spotify lists 👍
Loved it immensely at that time and bought the single and later on the album too.
Summer of 1996 wasn't stunning in terms of weather! Compared to 1995 it was quite terrible.

Same here. At that time, I had heard of Eurovision,but never knew when it was,being in the States. Still,this song was getting played a lot on New York radio in the spring of '96,along with her follow-up hit, "Gimme Some Love". It was only after seeing a video of the 1996 contest that I found out it was a Eurovision song.
I think more than any other, this song embodies the spirit of Eurovision. Not only at that moment in time, but going forward. It is the consummate pop song with a catchy hook and a beat to get your foot tapping and delivered with joy and enthusiasm. It never ceases to amaze me that it didnt win and to add insult to injury it came 8th which was undeserved.
I was born less than a year before this song hit the Eurovision stage in Oslo. But it takes me back to my childhood of the late 1990s with the electronic vibes. Mae Muller was amazing in Liverpool, but I feel if this song had been sent instead, the UK might have won, or at least placed in the Top 5. This song is a good example of a Eurovision song that is still as Fresh! now as it was 27 years ago (pun intended). Gina G, Eurovision will NEVER forget you. And PLEASE come back to Eurovision as a performer. I am SURE you will have better luck the second time around. Much anticipation and love from Ohio.

Anyone stating that Australia has no right to be in Eurovision. Well, just remember Gina G (1996, UK), Olivia Newton-John (1974, UK), Andrew Lambrou(2023, Cyprus) and Silia Kapsis (2024, Cyprus), were all Aussies and all participated in Eurovision. Australia had been in the Eurovision song contest long before it even got an invitation to participate in 2014.

I remember when I found out that this song had been a competitor in Eurovision 1996, I almost had a break.Due the fact the that was knew it from school parties and from the radio and as played to exhaustion here (and i doesn't know Eurovision at the time) in Brazil, getting to the point of Gina made a small tour and performed at the main television programs of the time. There are even videos from this period here on YT
Eurodance and similar genres are quite rare in the eurovision but whenever they show up I'm very happy. Still listen to last year's "Let me be your halo" by Austria.
