    For Sinistcha and Polteageist, I think the difference that makes them separate species instead of region variants is the way of making the teas they are based on instead of the tea herbs that are used, which would've made more sense since Matcha and British tea do have different preparation procedures

    • @jacksonvoet8312
      @jacksonvoet8312 Před 6 měsíci +8

      Also, Polteageist is a deceased soul inspiriting a teacup, while Poltchageist was a Youkai born of emotions being put into a Tea caddy and gaining a soul all its own.

    The Shellos line's forms are actually based on the water in their habitats. In Detective Pikachu (the game), we see one form living on an island with a statue indicating that the other used to live there instead.

    • @TheRedSmarty
      @TheRedSmarty Před 6 měsíci +5

      The Pokédex in the main series has been more recently saying that their form specifically depends on water temperature, which also lines up with their version exclusivity in OR/AS.

    This video is so cool! The only thing I would have to say that is wrong is about the Hisuian Pokémon, Hisuian Qwilfish and Overqwil can be found in the wild in the Polar Biome. Hisuian Pokémon are next extinct, that’s just a common misconception. Also Hisuian Pokémon are not ancient forms, they are confirmed in game and on the website to have come from the already existing form. For example, the base forms of the starters already existed and then when taken to Hisui is when they changed. So Unovan Samurott already existed before Hisuian Samurott appeared, the only hisuian form that is the original form is Hisuian Voltorb which is obvious since Kanto Voltorb didn’t appear until Red and Blue. This video is really cool! Awesome job! Goodluck on your future endeavors!

    • @Goldenappleis4meh
      @Goldenappleis4meh Před 6 měsíci +18

      All Pokémon in the Terarium are imported, so they’re not found in the wild yet. However it is likely that they’re still around, as they had to be imported from somewhere.

    • @itsturniptime3699
      @itsturniptime3699 Před 6 měsíci +16

      Hisuian Growlithe likely is the original Growlithe as statues of them can be found in Kitakami which implies the entire Japanese country of Pokémon was comprised of these fluffy little dogs but eventually either got outcompeted by or selectively bred into the non-rock variants we see today all over the world.
      The PLA starters are definitely new as Laventon was the man who introduced the original three to the region and the only others we see are from space time rifts where normal Dartrix, Dewott, and Quilava evolved into their Hisuian forms to adapt to the sudden new climate.
      All of the Hisui Pokémon seem to be subspecies or close relatives of their original counterparts with the exception of as you said, Voltorb and maybe Growlithe.

    • @gabriellockwood2780
      @gabriellockwood2780 Před 6 měsíci +2

      I'll disagree with them not being "Ancient" 😂
      They're old.
      Hisui Forms exist as far back as 300~ years.

    • @Lumberjack_king

      The hisuian quilfish can be found in colder more polar waters they were probably only recently rediscovered

    • @octokraken6359
      @octokraken6359 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@gabriellockwood2780 By that logic shouldn’t the base form be ancient since they came before the hisuian form? I see what you mean though, gamefreak really should have made things more clearer before they retconned a bunch of regional forms and cross gen evolutions into Sinnoh. Technically they treat Hisui as its own region so I see why they did that but it’s still really confusing. 😂

    With the recent reveal of Pecharunt as a Pokémon capable of making other Pokémon stronger via a toxic chain I wonder if it has any connection to the Pokérus which causes the infected Pokemon to grow stronger until their immune system is able to partially cure them as the effect of the Pokérus always remains, much like the toxic chain. Also both Pecharunt and the Pokérus have the same pinkish purple colour scheme, which was the reason I even had this thought.

    Also to answer what I think about slowbro relationship to slowking and it’s galarian form, I personally believe it’s just a hair more related to Slowking because of their relationship to regular slowpoke, being two final forms of the same Mon.

I always felt that Blissy was related to Wigglypuff & Claifairy, that Koffing was related to Geodude, & I think that Muk is based on the Blob which was a creature that came from space.

    The other example of this is Remoraid sticking under mantine. The real life example of this being Remoras and Sharks.
    The remora receives a convenient food source, the scraps of shark food, the sharks protect them from predators and give them free transportation throughout the oceans. Remoras keep the waters clear of scraps around the shark, preventing the development of unhealthy organisms near the shark.

    with the shelmet and Karrablast i think there is an explaination that dosnt need exchanging dna
    when shelmet evolves it could be that it sheds its shell and karablast takes that and evolves(kinda like how slowpoke evolves)

    Drapion is a scorpion so it should be in the arachnid category
    Gligar and gliscor are scorpion flies
    Mecoptera (from the Greek: mecos = "long", ptera = "wings") is an order of insects in the superorder Holometabola with about six hundred species in nine families worldwide. Mecopterans are sometimes called scorpionflies after their largest family, Panorpidae, in which the males have enlarged genitals raised over the body that look similar to the stingers of scorpions, and long beaklike rostra.

    Hey Toby, I might not have been your biggest fan over the time, but I really enjoyed your videos and theories here and there. Putting this tree of evolution together, refinining it over the years, agreeing to disagree in previously made assumptions, that's actually scientific work. So if there will ever be a real world science branch of 'Pokémonology', you'd better step up to become Professor Toby!
    I also must admit, your closing words of this wonderful video brought me some chills and a little tear. And I'm a grown man of 34. Doesn't matter.
    I wish you all the best for your future plans and I'm thankful for your contrubution to the Pokémon Community.

    It’s possible that yea sada and turo attempted to get Pokémon from alternate timelines but they miscalculated and got it from their own past and only assumed they were from alternate timelines like in the cutscene they assume they’re in one

    For Slowbro:
    I believe that Trade Evolution forces the hidden power in Pokemon DNA to activate, forcing evolution. So I think Galarian Slowpoke is the original Slowpoke because it doesn't need to be traded to evolve. Then, it spread out of Galar, couldn't rely on Galarica anymore, and evolved into Kantonian Slowpoke, which is just more adaptable, so it wouldn't need an item to evolve into Slowbro. However, because of this, it needs both an item and trading to unlock its power and become Slowking

    i think electivire is definitely a great ape, it just has that big gorrila-esque energy, i think it probably just evolved those stripes for intimidation, like tigers. like convergentant evolution. it doesn't feel enough likeba cat to convince me that it is one. and i think magmortar might be a monotreme like blissey, it doesn't feel like a bird to me. it seems more likely that it is just a mammal with some bird-like traits, like with blisseys "feathers".
    EDIT: gonna add more as i watch, to me sigilyph has always felt more like it might be related to pokemon like unown and wobbuffet, i don't think its a bird i think its just a psychic being with wings

    • @jakewro4592
      @jakewro4592 Před 5 měsíci

      i also forgot to mention this but i think breloom is probably more likely to be a mushroom that has evolved to look like a kangaroo rather than actually being a kangaroo, looking at shroomish theres no way its anything mammalian so i think when it evolves it just gains traits of mammals for defense rather than actually being a mammal

    • @jakewro4592
      @jakewro4592 Před 5 měsíci

      i think alcremie and slurpuff should definitely be in the pixies/sprites section instead of the plant life. i think calling these "sugar cane" pokemon is a bit of a stretch, i think its more likely that they're not actually made of sugar and have just evolved to look like deserts. and i think daschbun is probably just a dog, not special in any way. i think its a stretch to say that its not related to houndstone and mabosstiff, again i think its just a dog that evolved to look like a pastry instead of actually being a pastry. and i think slurpuff looking like a dog has less to do with it being related to dachsbun and more to do with it just wanting to appeal to humans more so it evolved some dog-like traits

    The only thing I really have a problem with the tree of life in this series is the insistence to focus specifically on the final evolution of the Pokémon.
    Evolution in this case might be similar to metamorphosis, but it’s not exact. A Treecko can live it’s entire life completely fulfilled as a Treecko and even breed in this form if it doesn’t meet the requirement to evolve, and not all Pokémon who can, do evolve. A final Pokémon evolution is only a “potential” final form.
    Pokémon adapt to gain evolutions if in their base form they’re too weak for their environment. If we consider Meowth as the base Pokémon to be represented on the tree rather than Persian, we can see how different Meowth populations adapt to gain different evolutions depending on environmental factors. This also solves the problem of the whole slowpoke line mess with which ones are closer related, as simply kantonian slowpoke and galarian slowpoke are the two closest related, with an earlier slowpoke acting as the common ancestor with both the kantonian and galarian variants retaining the Pokémon evolution patterns. Divergent evolution rather than convergent. But that’s only obvious if you consider the “base” Pokémon on the tree to be the pre evolution.
    Same thing can be applied to for example remoraid. While it could go either way here, I believe the remoraid form came first, but in order to continue to survive, it adapted and gained the ability to evolve into octillery, much more capable of defending itself and its schools offensively. But ultimately it is a phylogenetic fish rather than a mollusc.
    Tl;dr, to base a Pokémon’s placement on the tree of evolution on solely its final evolution is shortsighted, and to treat Pokémon evolution as a 1:1 for metamorphosis misses the point that Pokémon evolution is an upgrade rather than biological maturing

    Hehe, funny how we have confirmation that the Paradox Pokemon are just alternate timelines, so they'd be closely related to the Pokemon we view them as like how closely Donphan would be related to Great Tusk and Iron Treads.

    Amazing tree Toby-sensei! :D
    Wanted to add some possible non-mammalian Synapsid members:
    The Nidorans, the Slowpoke line, the Rhyhorn line, Kangaskhan, the Whismur line, the Haxorus line, the Noivern line and the Paradox Beasts (Walking Wake, Gouging Fire and Raging Bolt).
    Also, what do you think about this theory?
    Most Ghost-type Pokémon (including other species like Weezing), as well as most Mineral-based Pokémon (Glalie, Froslass, Metagross, Coalossal, Golem, Golurk, Claydol), etc., are actually Cnidarians, since we have Jellicent as the bridge between Tentacruel and the more advanced aerial species, which can either use gasses or levitate by their own force field. And, for the second category, we have Galarian Corsola, as well as Palossand, as the bridges between normal corals like Corsola, and the mineral branches xD

    I really love this video! I love this idea of pokemon phylogenetics and i will totaly get an poster! but as an phylogeny nerd i have some things i think you get wrong
    - I think Noivern is a bat not a wyvern, even tho he has wyvern in the name he has big ears, a thing that we don't see in reptiles or in this case the draconis
    - the plant part is a little weird ofc but i think would make more sense if they were put more like the plants evolved irl, so first the algaes like dhelmise and last all the flower pokemon that would be the angiosperms, i think this woukd make more sense overall

    I think Magmar with its tail really resembles Golduck, which is clearly a duck. However, I personally ended up placing it as a monotremata, which is where I also placed Ludicolo. Maybe beca I don't remember why I made that decision a couple years back, and I'm now I am contemplating whether to move it as Golduck's closest relative... Maybe it's because I find Magmortar's beak more closely resembles the Lotad line than it does Golduck?

      Ryhorn also had little mini versions of themselves on the island with Nidoqueen. I now 100% believe Giovanni was testing cloning on Rydon line. Having clones that just become an all female or all male line which are both technically separate from each other makes perfect sense. If they cloned a female Rydon it became Nidoqueen line and if they cloned a male Rydon it became Nidoking line.
      Think about it. Female DNA has two X chromosomes and Male DNA has an X and a Y chromosome. If the cloned female Rydon was cloned using only its X chromosomes, there would be no Y chromosome that just magically shows up so the Nidoqueen line can never have males and can never have offspring.
      If Nidoking cloning was was done using male Rydon DNA, there would be both X and Y chromosomes in use - both may be needed to actually reproduce.
      Ultimately Nidoking and Nidoqueen lines are both either failed Rydon experiments or test subjects for research.
      WAIT - What about Nidoran? They are extremely reminiscent of another Pokémon from Kanto. One that would be perfect to Giovani’s little reindeer games… Rattata.
      When trying to clone Rydon they combined the dna with rats which created an abomination of a creature: Nidoran. A lab rattata that mutated as a result of cloning experiments with male and female Rydon and/or just the X&Y chromosomes in general (or the Ratatta they tested on was either male or female)

    In relation to Karrablast, Escavalier, Shelmet, and Accelgor, Lockstin/Gnoggin had a video discussing their inspirations. Karrablast is based off of a species of beetle that eat snails. When they evolve via trade, Karrablast gets the shell of Shelmet when it attempts to eat it, causing Karrablast to evolve into Escavalier. Meanwhile, Shelmet adapts to move quickly, evolving into Accelgor. The wrapping around Accelgor's body are like bandage wrappings due to the physical trauma from Karrablast trying to eat it. They might also be slime or something that snails can produce.
