I Watched All 24 Pokémon Movies So Let's Rank Them

  • I have officially uploaded a video. This started out as a quick video idea that would take maybe three/four weeks and ended up being a few months so sorry about the lack of uploads. I really wanted to make a video about the Pokémon movies and this felt like the most sensible way to do one.
    Watching every Pokémon movie over the course of a couple of weeks and then ranking them didn't feel like a massively difficult video to make but developing a script from about 60 A4 pages worth of notes that wasn't a complete mess wasn't easy. Hopefully this has come out somewhat successfully. Thanks for watching!

    Fun fact about the twist ending in 4Ever: the Japanese version didn’t spell-out that Sam was a young Prof Oak. The only clue is Tracy finding Sam’s sketchbook during the credits. The dub commissioned some new animations to make the connection clearer for the English-speaking audience (as well as some more scenes of Team Rocket).

The conflict involves Ash' mom which makes for great motivation and the villain is not a generic bad guy, instead is a little girl that wants her family back and is being used to fuel the unown. It's kind of a pun. 嘘つき (usotsuki) is the word for liar, as Jenny pointed out as well, which combines 嘘 (uso, lie) with the verb 付く (tsuku, to attach/to include). The Japanese name for Sudowoodo, Usokkie (ウソッキー), combines uso and ki (as in 木, tree), so it's a lying/deceiving tree (similar to how Sudowoodo is a 'pseudo wood')

It follows the stories of a handful of characters that have no connection to each other wandering around a big city which occasionally share an interaction between one another another that all come together in the end to solve a problem using their assets or skills they were too afraid to show during the story.

    Also fun fact, the American version of "Mewtwo strikes back" is nothing like the original version of the movie, lacking both the deep complexity the director wanted and an animated introduction that was shown on tv and in a radio drama to tease the movie in Japan. In the original Dr. Fuji is working on clonation to clone his daughter that died years ago. In this effort they clone the three starters, his daughter and mew, and the five become friends in a world where only their conscience exist, and where Ambertwo (the cloned conscience of Fuji's daughter) teaches Mewtwo about what it means to be alive. Mewtwo is the only one to survive the process, and when he is released from the tubes he has no memory of the other dead clones, nor of amber's lessons about life, and so he wants to know why he is alive, what is his purpose in this world. He even goes as far as striking a deal with Giovanni to find out what's his value, because if he is strong then his life has value. He doesn't want to kill everyone for no reason, he wants to show everyone that his life has value even if he is the result of an experiment. The army of clones he constructs is not to kill everyone else, he doesn't know that they are stronger than the originals, on the contrary he wants to show that clones are as strong if not stronger than the originals, and therefore their lives have value. In the end Mew comes to fight Mewtwo not because he wants to protect the world from distruction, but because he is ENRAGED that a "cheap human made copy" would even exist, let alone compare itself to the "only original living creatures", mew can't forgive Mewtwo's very existence, and he wants to fight him to the death. Meanwhile Mewtwo just wants to know what it even means to be alive and what worth has his life, a life that was given to him by humans, humans that saw him as nothing more than an experiment. And in the end when ash is petrified and all pokemon cry for him and those tears bring him back, that is when both mew and Mewtwo realize that it doesn't matter if you are a copy or an original, both matter equally and both are equally alive (it was revealed in the short about Fuji's daughter, completely cut in the 4kids version, that Pokemons are special because their tears are filled with life and that is why ash is brought back by tears. And the fact that both originals and clones had the same life in their tears is what sets them as equal). Even Misty's, Brock's and everyone else's dialogue during the confrontation between clones and originals is not about how "fighting is wrong", it's about how both groups are made by living creatures and all their lives have equal value. But alas 4kids and warner felt that a having a morally ambiguous villain was too hard for American audiences because kids are too fucking stupid to know who to root for unless you turn the villain into Pokemon Hitler.

The final message of the dub is good, and it kinda falls in line with the message of the original movie, "you can't place a value on a life based on the circumstances of it's birth, all lives are worth the same and they have to choose and find their purpose for themselves", but a good final message doesn't change the fact that the rest of the movie is dumbed down to hell and back

    43:05 so, just to clarify this, Meowth’s speech is actually a creation of the ‘99 dub. In the ‘98 Japanese version, he remarks about the moon like in the remake. That said, while I get what the ‘98 version was going for, I think the ‘99 dub’s speech is very well written and should have been in the remake. I can only assume it isn’t because either:
    A. Takeshi Shudo’s estate insisted it stay in the localization.
    B. The use of 3-D models meant that they would have had to reanimate the scene to match significantly altered jaw movements (unlike the hand-drawn version where you can get away with dialogue when a character’s mouth is facing away from the camera without their head moving), and there wasn’t the time/budget for that.
    C. The localization underestimated how attached audiences members (on average) were to aspects of the ‘99 dub and didn’t prioritize changing it.

    Iirc the mother returning at the end of Movie 3 is supposed to be way less out of left field than it actually is, in the Japanese Version it's directly mentioned she's not dead but in a hospital most likely in some form of indefinite coma from how the characters act when mentioning her. The translation just for some reason decided to omit that making it seem like she's just dead, some people take this as the Unown somehow actually changing reality so the mother comes back which sounds neat but the Japanese Version debunks that.

    • @nyanpasu4060
      @nyanpasu4060 Před rokem +5

      You're right that the Japanese version makes it sound like she was hospitalized, but the reason for her mother's return you're getting wrong. The movie's main writer was Takeshi Shudō (main writer for movies 1, 2 & 3) and its co-writer was Hideki Sonoda who assisted on this movie and became the main writer for movies 4 through 17. The main writer, Takeshi Shudō, 100% intended for Molly's mother to be dead and kept that detail vague yet implied because it's a movie for all ages. Co-writer Hideki Sonoda made the decision to bring Molly's mom back in the credits without Takeshi Shudō's knowledge or approval. When Takeshi Shudō had found this out it was too late to make changes and it upset him a great deal because he felt his co-writer didn't understand the intent of his movie for having Molly's mother be dead and that it wouldn't make sense for Molly to take someone else's mother if her own was still assumed to be alive. This was actually one of the main reasons Takeshi Shudō gave for his soon after retirement from the Pokemon movies and later the Pokemon anime. If the movie intended for Molly's mother to be alive Takeshi Shudō would have made changes to the movie itself rather than make it a small detail in the credits. It's an unintentional mess as far as sub is concerned because the main writer and co-writer couldn't agree on how the mother should be portrayed in the movie.
      This is actually the whole reason why the dub made changes so that the mother's portrayal wouldn't be as inconsistent as it was in the sub and it's why I view the dub as canon just for making an attempt at smoothing over this issue with what they had to work with. I mean, the unown didn't bring Molly's father back even though he was only missing - same logic can be applied if the mother was also missing. It also gives plausibility that Molly, given her age, might suspect her parents are dead and the adults around her are lying to her nicely by saying they're just missing. She was told her mom disappeared 2 years prior, so given her age then she would have believed her mom went missing whether that information was true or false. Being slightly older, she might suspect Schuyler's account for how her Dad went missing to be an obvious/nonsensical lie to cover for some accident that may have caused his death at the excavation site and consequently she might now assume the same cover-up lie could have been told about her mother as well. Lies that were told on account of her age and thus why she's grieving over both her parents when she is given the news about her father. I might be reaching there, although; she already matures a lot as a character despite her age throughout the movie, so it wouldn't be too out of character for her to reach that conclusion. Regardless, I just think saying her mother went missing gives more room to fill in the blanks than saying her mother was just hospitalized otherwise Entei would have simply picked up her real mother at the hospital instead which is the same criticism the main writer of this movie would have agreed with.

    I can't believe how low Pokemon 3 is. I've learned to love it more as an adult. I wouldn't say it's the best movie but considering that in a sense there is no villains, Molly is a young girl who was just told her father vanished/maybe dead, and instead of facing reality alone, the Unown create a world for her. The Unown aren't villains either, they are just Pokemon responding to Molly's wishes, which given her nature of wanting to escape her reality is the reason why everything looks like ice.
    Heck the only reason Entei was made was because Molly wanted her father back but she also knew he couldn't come back, so the Unown basically just tried their best with what she wanted.
    The only thing that does confuse me is why Entei took Deliah, or why Molly called her 'mother'. She wasn't too young to not remember her mother (plus she had a photo so).
    I just grew to appreciate it as an adult.

      Iirc Mewtwo Returns is considered a tv special, which is why it isn't usually included with the rest of the movies.

    An interesting detail is that Annie and Oakley are only referred to as Team Rocket members in the dub. In the Japanese version, they just thieves working on their own. Also, the movie's backstory was much different originally. Instead of a father Latios dying to create the Soul Dew, it was given to the people of Alto Mare by a swarm of Latios and Latias, and it was explained that Latios and Latias visit the city frequently. The ones that we saw were just the ones currently staying there, and as we see at the end of the movie, some new ones had come to keep Latias company.

    As for Pokémon the movie 3 Molly’s dad was looking for his wife. She had went missing and that’s why he was studying the Unown. That’s why she came back at the ending. Hopefully you see this and that helps clear up your confusion. Also Molly is only 5 and her mother went missing 2 years from the timeline so of course she would think Ash’s mom is hers.

    Why is mewtwo so associated with shadow ball? Like when I think of mewtwo that's one of the first things to come to mind even though it's a psychic type and has always used psychic

    • @youtubeviewer1387
      @youtubeviewer1387 Před 2 lety +18

      It's probably just easier to show it in animation. Psychic is hard to animate without basically turning into blood bending from Avatar

      Psychic is op on the anime. Its basically a one shot since yoy just lift the enemy and play with it

      I think it's important to note in the first movie with Mewtwo's shadowball attacks, Dark pokemon; and shadow ball wasn't a thing yet. Donphan was a awesome sneak peak into second generation pokemon in the beginning of the movie.
      That and I think it was easy to animate a strong psychic attack like a shadow since mewtwo was full of "darkness"
      Then later on Shadowball became a thing and they just kept it perhaps?

      Ya I’m actually shocked Pokémon didn’t capitalize on the money but making it an exclusive move to multiple and renaming it or making it a bigger deal to use with him in the game. Because of the money whenever I can I give him that move.

    • @ghost_curse
      @ghost_curse Před 2 lety

      @@midsectionmark8956 It wouldn't really make sense to have a ghost type move as his signature move plus they did eventually give him Psystrike

    I can't remember if the pokemon movies are considered canon to the anime or if they are like DBZ where they technically fall under a different timeline; but I think the fact that in the newest episodes of the anime Ash has a lucario now might canonize the Lucario movie.

    • @weridplusho
      @weridplusho Před 2 lety +3

      Not all of them are, most aren't. The newest ones starting from I Choose You are total AUs.
      The Lucario movie was and is canon as Ash had Aura in the anime since the movie (mentioned twice before Journeys tho they're so minor.)

    Lucario and the Secret of Mew is also what got me back into pokemon. I loved gen 3, but come gen 4, I started to feel too old for it. I was a "cool" middle schooler now! But then somehow I got my hands on the movie, likely as a gift from my mother, and it just hit me so hard. The characterization of lucario, the downright adorableness of mew, and the first permadeath that I knew of, breaking my heart (I hadn't seen Heroes yet). It was all so good! While I'll never be the biggest gen 4 fan, simply because I was in my awkward years when it was out, I'll always appreciate this movie for bringing me back. ❤️
