the original 1225 cartridge does not have the balancing spool as a integral part of the cartridge as the 1222 does hence the price difference...if you have a push/pull Moentrol valve (not a 12222 Posi-Temp) the balancing spool part #1423 is a seperate part and any issues with lack of either hot or cold water will not be resolved by changing the 1225 cartridge but by unsticking or replacing the #1423 spool (to unstick you can soak the 1423 in a 50/50 water/vinegar boiled water for 2 minutes or buy a new 1423 spool) THE REASON YOU CAN RESOLVE ISSUES OF NO COLD OR HOT WATER WITH A POSI-TEMP CARTRIDGE IS, UNLIKE THE 1225 THE 1222 CARTRIDGE HAS A BALANCING SPOOL THAT IS BUILT INTO THE 1225 CARTRIDGE, THAT'S WHY THE HIGHER PRICE FOR A 1222 CARTRIDGE BECAUSE IT CONTAINS THE SPOOL UNLIKE THE 1225 WHICH HAS TWO SEPARATE COMPONENTS, THE CARTRIDGE AND #1423 SPOOL THAT HAVE TWO DIFFERENT PRICES

I'm a mechanic for nearly 32 years, and what has helped me around engines is to put shop rags in all orifices to avoid dropping essential parts in said orifices, so, I would definitely stuff the drain and inside the tile wall to avoid dropping that pin, especially if you are drinking on the job, which I will not confirm nor deny that I practice this method.💆‍♂️

IMPORTANT POINT he notes at the end of the video ..... The cartridge he is showing is the latest plastic version. Older cartridges are brass not plastic and are notorious for freezing up due to corrosion and when using that moen tool it only pulls out the inner shaft leaving you with a major job. There are many videos showing ways to remove the entire outer cartridge. So before attempting the repair, view the videos on repairing broken cartridges.

I installed a new 1225 and was completely perplexed why left was cold and right was hot. Removed the entire cartridge a few times to see what I possible goober'd up, reinstalling the entire cartridge 180° to no avail, then learned in your video that all I had to do was rotate the inner plunger 180°. Here a six pack to you Trevor, just did my Moen 1225 tub/shower valve cartridge, for I used the old fashion T-puller two in one & it came off like a charm. Instead of the one that is commonly used now a days, for used it before on removing valves, but much easier with the T-puller. And also for the tip on 180 degree turn of reverse of hot & cold. You rock!!! Now have to change the angle valves on outlet from the wall to bottom toilet tanks. Have a great day Trevor & thanks for the very informative video!!!

Great video! I just completed the valve change out! - thanks to watching your video gave me the courage! This condo in San Dieg does not have a unit water shut off - you have to shut off the main which shuts off 8 units - got to give 24 hour notice (I did not want to wait) - I used a large standard screwdriver and turned the valves on both sides off after spraying them down with Super Penetrator. Anyway cheers! and more good iced coffee!

This was the best video that I could find for the 1225!! I've had my water off since yesterday noon. I bent the clip trying to force it in over and over. None of the other videos showed where the top/bottom of this was. I had the cartridge in sideways the entire time!! Even the Moen videos didn't show this.. They just said the 'notch' should be on the bottom. What notch?? I finally was showed the notch in one video, which was the flat part of the middle 'bolt'. But the thing has 2 flat spots!! Top and Bottom!! So, that didn't help. Plus, guess what... that bolt thing turns, so even if I did find that stupid notch, the casing may be sideways!! F...ing-A.

Great video! Very well explained and made the job really easy without breaking anything. A couple issues I had was the puller came to an end before I was able to get the stem out of the valve body so I slowly rotated the handle on the puller back and forth while pulling and it finally came out. The other issue I had was getting the new stem to slide into the valve body. I destroyed my first stem trying to force it in even after applying lubrication. I took a toothbrush and some calcium/lime remover and scrubbed the inside of the valve body for 30 minutes. The second stem I coated in petroleum jelly and it slid right in with little effort. Never use a metal brush or sandpaper inside the valve body or you might have some new drips. Hope this helps.

Great video! Better instruction than most other videos for this job. Thanks for the heads up about possibly needing the Moen cartridge puller- I definitely needed it. I've seen several videos warning that the insides of the old valve might break loose leaving the outer brass sleeve stuck in the pipe. I had no such problem, and my old valve was stuck pretty good. The puller worked as advertised. I have to wonder what folks who broke the old valve were doing. Also, thanks for the suggestion to check for rubber pieces in the pipe that might break off when removing the old valve. One warning- don't use a third party replacement valve (like Danco brand). I tried this to save a couple of bucks. Big mistake! It didn't fit easily and didn't work properly once installed. To make matters worse, I damaged it getting it back out. After much aggravation I went back to the store and got a Moen brand 1225. It fit easily and worked perfectly. I'm sure Danco ornamental stuff like handles are fine, but for precision items like valves, go with the manufacturer. FYI- the Moen 1225 valve came already lubricated so no silicon had to be applied.

Not sure why I would have to change it so soon after the valve was installed...maybe because it was Dec/1987??? hahaha. Moen makes great products and this cartridge was replaced n/c because it was dripping. The only other thing I had to do to it was replace the acrylic handle about 7 or 8 years ago.

Thank you for the video My shower valve was becoming increasingly stiff to turn on or off and hard to turn and the other day I could not get the hot dawn to a decent temp even on. Full could it was still hot but just bearable. I was scared because this is an old shower Valve that has been in my house for close to 30 years. I took a picture and went to Home Hardware I showed the plumbing person a picture of the valve and they took me to the plumbing Isle and handed me a replacement cartridge for my Moen shower control valve and told me that it would be free because, Moen guarantees the cartridge for life so no charge for the part. I was scared because it was quite green and corroded around the outside of the brass housing. But I got the clip out easily and the cartridge turned fairly easily with the white tool wrench thing and a couple of tugs with the pliers and out popped the whole Valve cartridge with all the rubber bits. I put a bit of silicone grease on the seals and popped the new one in and put the clip back in and tested for Hot & cold settings and cleaned and replaced the cover and put on a new handle because the old one broke. and done in about 20 min. works like a charm That old valve was so stiff compared to the new one, I should have done this years ago. CFHEERS!!! Thanks for the Video it was very helpful and gave me the confidence that I could do this myself without calling a plumber.

Just changed one of these out today. If your unit is marked "Stanadyne" and not Moen, this cartridge still works! I was worried because my cartridge looked a bit different and the body was metal instead of plastic. I'm guessing it was really old. Thanks for the video.
