  • With the Rugby World Cup 2023 almost upon us, it is time to start making your predictions.
    Will hosts France finally break their drought? Will it be South Africa who retain the title? Or will Steve Borthwick’s England revolution result in his team lifting the Webb Ellis Cup at the Stade de France on Oct 28?
    Ahead of the tournament starting on Friday, Sept 8 with France v New Zealand, columnist and former England and Lions hooker Brian Moore has played Telegraph Sport’s interactive predictor to pick his winner. You can watch the full video at the top of the page, and also play your own predictor experience here: www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/wor...
    Moore, who played in the first three Rugby World Cups, including in England’s 1991 final defeat by Australia, went for the climax of the 2023 tournament being a repeat of the opening game, with France eventually coming out on top against the All Blacks.

    The more I look at this draw the more I am astonished at how badly drawn it has been. It couldn't have been drawn worse if it wasnt seeded at all. Newzealand and France should not be in the same group as each other as they are both favorites to win the tournament. Likewise South Africa and Ireland. An improving Scotland team are very hard done by to be in the same group as those two and will be unlucky if they don't make the quarter finals. Whereas Australia and Wales have been very poor recently so it would be acceptable if they didn't make the quarter finals however due to the draw its likely they will both be there. Madness

    Hi all. As a Chilean, I'm happy for our team for just being there and playing with the best in this World Cup. We hope to build on this great opportunity to learn and be competitive. I wouldn't call Ireland a dark horse, they're currently the best team in the world on merit. Personally I think France, Ireland and NZ all have an equal chance with SA slightly behind.
      I think it would be great for rugby if Ireland won, or at least be the 6th country to reach the final. If not them then France for their first win. Hope it 's not NZ or SA again. Nothing against them, it will just be better for the game if they don't.

    I fancy SA. They seem to be 15-0 up against most teams before the game starts, not least England who seem to freeze when up against the powerhouse Boks. Only a gut feeling but I do think all teams are scared of the SA physical game, with only the Kiwis ready to take them on without (too much) fear.

    • @speleokeir
      @speleokeir Před 9 měsíci +9

      Whilst the Boks certainly have a chance I think France and Ireland as well as the ABs are better. They'll have to play either France or NZ in the quarters and I suspect will go out then, although they're capable of winning that game.
      If they do they should get to the final, but again I'd put them as slight underdogs to beat whichever of the other three they play.

      I have not a single grain of doubt that the boks are hiding their true WC strategy and that they will raise some eyebrows when the time is right, IF they can execute effectively and consistently. It also tells me that whetever they're planning will rely on simplicity, physicality and endurance as these are the easiest to master and execute. Already seeing the signs but execution will be pivotal.

    Georgia beat Wales in Wales last year and probably stand more of a chance than Fiji of getting through to the quarterfinals. Also, saying Uruguay vs Namibia is a toss up just shows he doesn’t really know anything about either team. Uruguay will be heavy favourites in that one and should trouble Italy (came within a score of Italy last time they played in 2021).

    Anyway I had a bit of a left field idea for judging who will win, I'm calling it the Wales test, as in who does Wales have any chance of beating in a one off game, the only team that I think they have little or no chance against is New Zealand, not very scientific I know, but it's interesting to run these little thought experiments. I hope I'm wrong though since I'm Irish.
