On the internet I read stories about installing a SSD drive into your MV.
I wanted to have a few more gigabytes so I ordered a 64GB SSD PATA drive from eBay for a very reasonable price. (sold out already so no link...sorry)
I hoped for some real speed upgrade but to be honest...nope...not really but it was a nice project.
At least I can take my MV somewhere else without breaking the HDD :D
    Thanks for watching!
    Grtzzz,
    Roger

I don't think the bottle neck is the speed of the software (although it could play a role) but the hardware inside (IDE/PATA controller/CPU). Even so it's still a good idea for changing the conventional disk for an SSD because of it's durability. I think it's better not having moving parts. Of course SSD's can also crash after a certain amount of RW. I did the swap a few years ago and since then the 8800 never let me down, not even once. Nice video BTW. Keep up the good work!!!

      Jack D you’re right...it’s a combination of multiple factors.
Good to know it never let you down. That’s big plus anyway.
      And thanks for the compliment.

Glad this was straightforward for you, I unfortunately have found it a very frustrating experience as I believed the internet and used a sata ssd ( via ide interface adaptor)- despite trying several recommended interfaces I can’t get the mv to recognise and format the ssd (“disk not ready message”)...wish I just gone with a pata drive like you did! ( exactly same happened with my VS- switched to ide ssd and worked).

That's always cr*p when you keep on testing, testing and testing without positive results. I'm familiar with that concept regarding the SP-808...I've got a sh*tload of adapters now here and none is working.

I had the same issue 'disk not ready' message when I first tried to install a 120GB PATA SSD. In the end I removed it and plugged it to to my PC via a USB dock and formatted it on the PC. Then when I tried it in the MV again I no longer got the 'disk not ready' message and was then able to re-format in the MV. Been working fine for the last 12 months.

I'm doing a IDE to SD card adapter and making a slot in the MV to be able to remove the SD card. Multiple hard drive since they will be SD cards and can pop that in the computer. Edit, and pop back in the MV.

Jason Arnold My former MV had also a slice in the bottom plate. I guess for the same idea as this was exactly positioned above the IDE-port.
But it came with the HDD.
Love the idea due to flexibility.

    • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  Před 4 lety

Jason Arnold that’s even better! To remove the floppy.
Only thing is that the floppy drive of the MV8K is smaller than a 3,5” floppy drive.
But there’s enough space for a solution.
      Good idea.

@@theMIDImaniac people have 3d printed floppy drive plastic that the SD card adapter will fit on. Like the SCSI2SD drive plates made from 3d printer's. I will just have to drill and cut a slot in my case, or make a panel in the back where the opt8 goes since I don't have that anyhow. Will drop you a email of photos when I get it done.

Nice video Roger. But the speed i Think has bottle neck on the file system and probably how they wrote the code. Would be nice if someone could crack the code and improve on it since Roland Will not go back to rewrite it.Somewhere in the Mv nation site i read a guy who claimed He had succeded and was on it. Well time has passed since then. I guess we just have to accept the Mv88 and Mv8k as they are.

I sold it to a fan in Italy.
Here in Spain I came this MV8800 across with the MV8-OP1 installed for an incredible price. Almost brand new with all manuals and the original CD’s still sealed.

@@theMIDImaniac Wow, that's awesome! I am still using my MV-8000 and I was going to change the harddrive in it but, I would have to change the connector on it all I left it as is. I haven't had any problems with it and since it has a 25gb drive in it I didn't think it was worth the effort. Plus I use a 5TB back up drive. I love your videos, I've been using mine about 5 years now and finally have a good grasp of is capabilities but you've shown me a few things I had never tried before. Thanks for that and keep up the good work!

Hi, i have bought a mv8000 and the hard drive is crashed. So i will replace it by another hd or ssd. I want to now all drives work with the mv8000 or if there is particular models of drives to buy.

    • @theMIDImaniac
      @theMIDImaniac  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Jeremy!
      Thanks for your questions.
Well, replacing the HDD is an easy job.
You have the 8000 so you need a 40-pins unit. SSD also exist with 40-pins.
My suggestion would be to search for not too much GB. Why? In case of a crash you will not loose too much work.
64GB or 128GB will be fine.
But why not installing a CF to IDE reader?
Then you can easily make back ups, swap files, create JPGs with a computer.
I’m extremely happy with that solution. Never ever the slow USB connection anymore.
I have a vid about that too.
