Boy George's 1970s Save Me From Suburbia (Boy George Documentary)

  • British pop star Boy George recalls, revisits and assesses how the 1970's moulded the person and artist he has become. This is his musical, social and sexual coming of age, when he discovered the power of his own sexuality before setting about turning that persona into a popstar. Set against a backdrop of social discord, disenfranchisement and sexual repression, the seventies was also conversely the decade that revelled in colour and creative chaos, giving the world glam rock, disco and punk, and the young George O'Dowd was at the birth of them all. The documentary includes contributions from contemporaries like Martin Degville (Sigue Sigue Sputnik), Andy Polaris (Animal Nightlife), DJ Princess Julia and popstar Marilyn. This is, as George said, 'the last ever bonkers decade', and it totally and completely shaped him.
Boy George says: 'I think of the 70's as being this glorious decade where I discovered who I was and discovered all these amazing things - punk rock, electro music, fashion, all of that. And yeah of course there was that dark side to the 70's, the rubbish, the strikes, the poverty, and I'd get chased and confronted for the way I looked. But I was a teenager. I didn't have any time for misery. I was just having a great time with my friends!

I remember when he was young and reckless, dealing with his drug abuse and toxic relationship with Jon. When things got really bad, and his interviews were erratic, he would always say something profound that hit home with me. It was easy to see how smart he was, beyond the makeup, and the brand being created. He never struck me as shallow or superficial, but rather wise and insightful for his age. I remember, after seeing the footage where he passes out mid sentence, saying to my girlfriend "If he survives this crazy ride and lives to be an adult, he will be known for so much more than being just a drag queen pop singer." Under the make up, costumes, and posturing, the substance was always there. I'm so glad he has lived to experience it all. Great job, George!

This documentary makes me so nostalgic i feel for crying, though my time were the late 80's London was still this amazing place, to go into clubs, The Sanctuary Badlands on Tuesday night was my night, really you had to look the part to get in, heavens was just beside it , leaving the club at 3 am was a whole adventure....I look at my daughter now and i'm shocked not her or her friends ever go out , only from one home to the other, what has happened I don't understand...complaining about knife crime in London, who is surprised? no youth clubs no clubs no meeting places for young people no activities no political assemblies or unions , nothing , youth today have nothing but social media and dreams of becoming rich and beautiful through plastic surgery..so sad

At 3:04. Vinyl was a real part of the 80s culture. You could spend a whole day searching for records at shops. There were no less than 16 record stores in the downtown core of my city. And they had hard to find imports and the odd bootleg. New releases were incredible with at least eight good records per week. And bands could be seen live for less than $25. Those were good times.

I adore Boy George! I was coming of age when he and Culture Club hit it big. Raised in the conservative south of the US, I was lucky that I grew up with a mom with great musical tastes living a free hippie lifestyle. She had an enormous album collection that contained every rock album of the 60s and 70s, including Bowie, T-Rex and The Sweet as well as UFO, Van Halen and random others like Englebert Humperdinck! We had no money but we were rich in the musical freedom my mom gave my sister and me from a very early age. She’s in her 80s now but to this day I still tell her how much that freedom meant to me when so many others had parents who ripped their Motley Crue album covers. Boy George had a bit of a misfit quality that I could totally relate to, being a girl growing up without a father in a nontraditional home in a town where my mom was considered a little bit TOO fancy free. He is so great at narrating and storytelling! Loved this documentary. Thanks for posting!

Wow, just wow. Boy George is a remarkably good presenter. Whereas other documentaries of the 70's and 80's are a bit dull, this one captivated me. I'm of exactly the same generation as George so this was definitely a walk down memory lane. I also had the pleasure of seeing Culture Club live at Manchester Polytechnic student union just a few weeks before they hit number one so it was probably their last smallish gig before they became a super group. It was an excellent gig, no doubt.

Where I grew up it was about ten years later when all this change happened and thank goodness the changes have taken and society hasn't gone backwards. It was a huge thing when I was young to know that I wasn't the only alien in the world. Never take your freedom or liberty for granted. Someone in previous times has paved the way and fought the battle.

Was in grade school (10yrs old) when his music was popular, back then I thought he was bizarre. But when they did the Christmas Band Aid song, I remember how noticable it was his voice that was such a delight, brought the song alive, his voice was THE BEST, all these years later I did not realize how wonderful he is. A true gem, there will never be anyone as special and genuine as this man...in my opinion!✨✨🌟🌟🌞🌞

So, so many of these varied artists have survived to tell their own personal story.
Everyone has their own personal journey.
I lost my dear hero of a gay brother to AIDS in the 1990s.
He was the haircutting, successful , hero of our family.
I so very miss my dear brother " pudgy hands" Frank.
That boy could slay both genders.
I could only wish I was as good looking as him.
He was the most popular male in our entire town.
All of the girls loved him.
The poor twenty-seven-year-old died at the famous age of 27
He was in good company :
Jimi Hendrix; ( such a gentle soul)
    Jim Morrison;
    Janis Joplin;
My dear brother Frank sure was in good company..
I was twenty-nine when I lost him --and he was 27.
I have now missed him all these years.
My hero of a brother --- as I am now 56.
I've had to endure all these years with the loss and memory of my dear sweet brother.
That kid was so popular as I'm a bit angular, and less . confident .
He truly was the star of our family -- tears all these years .
    I miss you Frankie!!!!!
I hope to see you again --crying a test , rolling a tear and down onto my pillow.
I saw this documentary on CZcams and know that this artist also has a story.
    I also have a story.
    A Drummer .
I miss you my dear brother.

I absolutely loved the sight of Boy George when I first saw him on TV. I was an art major and punk. Many of my male friends wore smeared kohl pencil and extravagant clothing. But Boy George...I was envious of how he put his makeup on and his style was out of this world for the time. Just lovely. I wore vintage early 60s clothing and the kind of vintage shoes that had kitten heels and needle toes. I mixed it with patterned tights in bright colors I bought from a local punk boutique, and short sheath skirts and Goodwill wool tunic sweaters or cashmere twin sets. Or buttoned down shirts with men's jackets and coats. They were cheap and an antidote to the massive shopping malls and department stores. Some guys I partied with or met at concerts wore transparent plastic color block rain coats or mixed "girly" with "manly" clothing

1:29 The way that John Peel announced Culture Club, with that smile, that is somewhere between incredulity that this is really happening and "this is a joke" sort of reaction. The first record that I bought in my life was 'Colours by Numbers'. A life changing moment. If Marc Bolan and David Bowie inspired Boy George, Boy George inspired so many others too.

You mean "history", the word "reality" somehow implies that this documentary uniquely reveals a hidden truth about the socio-economic issues of the 1970s. Errr no its pretty heavily imprinted on even popular culture and society today. An important part of world music heritage, even the reaction in popular music continuing into the 80s, is directly related to the that era and its "reality" that everyone knew about.

Bravo! This was superb. George comes from a long line of Irish poets, aesthetes and eccentrics. I think of Oscar Wilde. What a difference a generation can make! Boy George was a bit ahead of me , but still my generation. I had all the same idols and influences. People who were freaks found their totemic inspirations and leaders such as Bowie, Bolan, and Lou Reed. I grew up in California so I went from hardcore to post punk rapiidly as well. The clothes were important, so was the music, and the sense of belonging to something and individuating. Thanks for this!

I was living in my suburbia in L.A. with my folks working as a brand new hairstylist at 18 and attending College.Majoring in Art. After graduation l moved to Santa Barbara, CA. Where l actually saw my first punk rockers! Also a few in downtown L.A! When l moved from that area! I honestly didn't know what those kids were supposed to be! I was still listening to country music and rock, but l added the Stray Cats to my record collection! Lol! When l first heard Boy George on the radio,my little sis had a crush on him! He was sooo handsome! We both thought he was cute and he had a beautiful voice! He was awesome! My sis bought his records! Lol! His style was modern and cool! What a talent!😊🎉❤❤

I love George’s unapologetic honesty. How exciting it must of been being right smack center of a cultural revolution. He managed to become a rock star in that scene. Almost has though he was ordained to he be the chosen one. He sold 150 million records!!!! That’s insane!!! I had his poster on my wall in 7th grade at the time I started having girlfriends. I remember a girlfriend mentioned he was gay, and I really didn’t know much about the topic. I just thought he was over the top with his look and style. I still love seeing him perform with his full look. He is a global icon!!!
