    I think the reason for the backs of buildings being modeled is that when in the terraforming mode, standing directly behind a building (as well as cliffs) shifts the camera angle to a bird's eye view. Even thoigh you still can't really see the back side of the buildings in this view, they probably modeled it just in case.

    7:00 The baby inside of the peach is a reference to Momotarō, a Japanese folklore hero. An old childless couple found a peach floating down a river, out of which popped a little baby boy. They named him Momotarō because it basically means "Peach Boy". He later goes on an adventure to save his land from demons by going to their island and defeating them. He befriends a talking dog, monkey, and pheasant along the way and they help him with his quest.
    The baby inside of the bamboo comes from "The Legend of the Bamboo Cutter"/"The Tale of Princess Kaguya". In it, an old man finds a weird shining bamboo stalk. When he cuts it, he finds a tiny little baby girl, whom he names Nayotake no Kaguya-hime ("Shining Princess of the Young Bamboo"). Kaguya grows up to become a beautiful young woman, and all the popular boys want her, especially the Emperor of Japan. Kaguya turns them all down and says "btw I come from the moon, I gotta go home lmao" and peaces out to the moon. She gives the Emperor an elixir of immortality, which he has burned on the highest mountain - it's believed that the word for immortality ("fushi") became the name for Mt. Fuji.

    Hi there!
    I'm a game developer and can share with you my theory about all these models that are fully modelled, even on the back side.
    ACNH is the first game in the series to use realtime lighting, which means dynamic shadows. In most 3D engines, the back side of any polygon is gonna be ignored when rendering lighting and shadows. This is commonly called backface culling.
    In order to get the buildings and some other objects to properly project a drop shadow when the sun is behind them, there needs to be geometry facing out! It doesn't have to be detailed, just a simple quad does the job.
    One exception here is on the tree leaves, which are, as you can see, flat 2D textures that still render from both sides and still project shadows. This is done at the shader level, where both the lighting, and color rendering is defined, as well as the movement from the wind.
    For the fixed camera buildings, it's a different story. The lighting is most likely pre-computed (it's called baking), you still need all the faces in order to generate the shadows properly. Once the baking is done though, these back faces can be removed to save rendering time.
    I hope this helped!
    Cheers

      Works the same with villager houses

  • @SgtAbramovich
    @SgtAbramovich Před 3 lety +192

    Theory for the house backs:
    They are modelled on the backside because they still have collision, and AC probably has collision detection based on world geometry. Since the engine won't render textures if they are hidden, the devs could keep them textured to help them visualize where the player is stopped by them, and since they don't have exclusive textures that would also not take any extra space. In the case of the trees, they're too tall for the grove to affect player collision, so they only needed to worry about the trunk (which is also modeled and textured all the way round).

    • @Zack_Wester
      @Zack_Wester Před 3 lety +3

      was going to suggest this too see you got before me.
      Not 100% but colition boxes/planes are still technically part of the world and I would guess that putting a texture+collision on all 5 part of a box is you know barely any extra processes vs just having texture on 4 part and collision on 5.
      especially when several of the buildings looks like they only have "Gouraud" shading on them(not 100% if that's the correct name).
      Im using Gouraud to refer to a polygon (in this case the flat plane that makes up the backside of a building) revising a Red,Green,Blue value.
      by default a polygon is made of 3 points in a space whit 3 lines going between them A goes to B, A to C and the other way around. the part inside this get filled creating a triangle on the screen. normally if you leave it color data blank its grey/black or white. now a smart person give the Polygon a color so even if the texture don't load for a reason it still have a somewhat correct look to it.
      like the grassy ground been plain green instead of grey. until the texture of green grass loads.
      in fact you might order the system to not put texture on anything far away and just let the basic mono colors of the polygons do the job.
      and on a grass field from really far away it will do the job more then well enough to sell the illusion... plus it always a good backup if anything goes wrong.
      you can in fact see this in action in a lot of games if you play it on a slow hard drive. where the player spawn and a brick wall at first is just a plain red wall then a blurry red brick texture appers and later a full brick texture gets loaded and it looks stunning. (all this in the span of about 1 to 3 seconds).

    • @BoundaryBreak
      @BoundaryBreak  Před 3 lety +35

      Faulty theory my dude. As mentioned in this very video, Animal Crossings past history proves you dont need to have textures on the back of houses. Which also disproves the notion that its needed for collision

    • @SgtAbramovich
      @SgtAbramovich Před 3 lety +16

      @@BoundaryBreak I didn't say the textures were needed, just that the geometry was. The geometry can have no texture, but maybe the developers just didn't think it would make that much difference in terms of performance and it would help them visualize the houses more easily in their editor. It's also not entirely out of the question that they could have changed their design philosophy or game engine over the years. I can't say much more as I don't have all that much experience, and the only way to know for sure would be to ask them.

      I think it's because of the fancy new shadows, which would explain why previous titles didn't have geometry for the rear side of objects.
      Almost all games use a technique called "shadow mapping" to render shadows, which works by rendering the depth information (how far each pixel is from the camera) of the whole scene from the perspective of a light source (in this case the sun), and then comparing that to the depth information of the player's camera after doing some math magic.
      Since the sun can go behind objects, the rear side still has to exist, otherwise the shadows could break completely.
      It's still textured, but polygons that face away from the camera don't get shaded so there's little to no performance impact there. Probably easier for the artists to just leave the whole thing textured.

    theory for black boxes:
    at one point a certain character would've been programmed to enter the door, and the black box is just what you see when they enter, but idk about the changing room tho, maybe a villager would've been able to go in the changing room, but was probably removed if somebody wanted to enter but they're blocking it.

    • @NekoMichi
      @NekoMichi Před 3 lety +1

      This is very much likely the case. If the external walls are removed, the insides of these black boxes are fully textured to match the walls and floors of the building. The back of the door is also fully textured. I looked around for files associated with these maps but didn't find any animations for the door opening.

They both were discovered in their respective, uh, fruit/vegetation as babies.
