Madonna has a way with words, this lyrically and sonically big hit deserves it's place for historic anthems in the LGBTQ+ community. This loud and proud head bopping song is great, find out why!

This song is 31 years old and it sounds like it came out yesterday. Even the video is fresh.
totally agree
This is my favourite song by Madonna! She's both masculine and feminine at the same time and I love it!
Like a Prayer is the BEST 80’s album. As close as pop music came to art! Classic!
@Daxton Knight still sure you don't like her?
This was the song that got me into madonna.
Me too, this was also the video that started my crush with her and I was only on my sweet sixteen years, now I am 47 and still have that crush on her! Can you imagine? I love her ❤, legend forever
@@carlosazul2 Yes, indeedy.
Me too, I was 5 years old,,, since then I love her
Me to
❤ from Malaysia
Same here ☝🏻
I love her “suit” choreography! Shows power, vulnerability, strength, and “ball grabbing!” She proved she has just as much balls as any man out there!
I'm SO grateful to have grown up in the era of Madonna, there will never be another like her, period!
The song was inspired by The Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself,” which is as R&B as it gets. The video, of course, inspired by Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis,” an early sci-go classic. A wonderful pedigree.
“What you need is a big strong hand...”...you know ... it can be your own big strong hand... your strength, perseverance and work... that is how I hear this line... kisses
It's my favourite Madonna song, the anthem of my life, my mantra!
Express yourself so you can respect yourself!
Thank you Dereck
This song is iconic, you shoud watch the MDNA Tour performance where she addresses the resemblance with Born This Way.
That’s bc GaGa is a knock off.
This video, which is created with an influence of one of the most important movies of science fiction, is very important for pop culture and feminism because it used bdsm, fetish, and strong, sexy female figure, because she used both herself and men as sex objects (both white and black), because she did all this in a satirical way against the criticism of the period before the 80s ended. Just this video is enough for Madonna to be the most influential female artist of all time. Maybe there are those who have done it before or not but none of them was as famous as Madonna. She's known for making mainstream what is underground and odd for the most. That's why she is so important for marginalized communities.
doesn't matter if they were or were not as famous.
the fact remains that she COPIED (just like gaga does) and madonna has no originality.
her looks were always based on others
as you even mentioned, the video was based on something else (i.e. NOT original)
madonna's earliest hits were NOT written by her
oh the list goes on
@@Skiptondesigns wow what an ignorant and empty comment
@@Skiptondesigns Madonna first album was written entirely by her.Queen also used Metropilis in their video.
@@Skiptondesigns So many words to say you have no idea about Madonna.
@@Skiptondesigns Only "Holiday" wasn't written by her. All her other major hits are/were. Do some research before writing things that aren't right. And yes everyone is inspired by some things already done before or by somebody else's work. It doesn't make your own offering, your own take on things less interesting or less of a challenge. Especially when done in this scale.
Another influential, classic David Fincher video. IMO he is the greatest music video director of all time. His body of work in videos is astounding. Check out Oh Father.
This woman has been a phenomenon for almost 40 years of my adult life. Madonna has been part of the soundtrack of my life. It is a pleasurs to enjoy this again through fresh eyes and ears. Many thanks!🙏
I think the same🫶
"..the white stufff.." lol🤣😂😃
I know. That was a good laugh.
I actually think it has more to do with women’s secretions. It’s the ‘kitty’ symbolism that she’s hitting us on the head about
I'm asian, I actually like white stuff 🤣
Até hoje não acredito que o álbum like a prayer não ganhou grammy. Todas as músicas são incríveis.
Express Yourself live by Blond Ambition Tour is amazing👑
Directed by David Fincher, as Vogue. This video change EEEEEEEVERYTHING!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Please, react to vogue, the music video from Madonna. This is a very representative song for LGBTQ comunity. Vogue is a kind of dance that became popular in the 1980's in gay clubs. It is also a LGBTQ resistence symbol. Madonna took this dance and popularized it through her song vogue, supporting LGBTQ comunity.
Love your channel Derrick...I started listening from the beginning when her first music came out in the 80s and have been a fan ever since. She is 2 yrs older than me and she is still touring at 62. Unbelievable. She does not act her age. She is the Queen and her voice will never be distinguished. Love you Derrick
This officially made me a Madonna fan when this came out. You have to rect to the live version of this from truth or dare. It’s closer to the video version and you’ll fall in love with the performance!!
I’m surprised most don’t mention the stunning visuals for the time, it was one of the most expensive videos of that decade.
React to her Bad Girl music video, it's like a small movie.
the best
Also by Fincher, right?
Fincher did George Michael's Freedom 90 video as well.
@@kimberlyridenour8003 Yes, another perfect video. He made so many classics in the early 90s
I absolutely love how "out of it" you have been with these Madonna videos - and believe me when I tell you that I mean that in the most positive way :) I love seeing your reactions to stuff that I have seen a billion times (and know every single minor detail of), and they actually remind me how awesome she (and her work) is! You are humble, very easy on the eye and honest - all brilliant qualities :) Keep up the great work mister, looking forward to more of your Madonna reactions - and other reactions as well! Take care!
Her music and videos are timeless. Love watching people react to her work.
When Madonna was Madonna !!! I miss that Madonna so much. My childhood and Youth listening her amazing music and watching her piece of art videos !!! Thank you for your reaction!!!👑🙌💪👏👍❤🔥🌈😎
Oh the sexy man is back with another madonna review including “you know.....the white stuff” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love u so much Dereck
child madonna has birthed so many gay babies, she deserves more love we are not gonna have her forever, god bless her!
the guy is "below" her, this song is about empowerment, and in this video it's empowering women, switching the gender roles. that's why so many gays relate to this. empowering not just women, but the LGBTQ community
Love it 😍 Now watch: WHAT IT FEELS LIKE FOR A GIRL. Bad-Ass-Madonna.
Madonna song s are timeless
The video was originally meant to feature the album version which used live instruments, but when she heard Shep Pettibone's remix of the song she loved it so much they replaced the album mix audio with this remix, so although you see a band in the video playing instruments, you don't 'hear' their instruments. It's a great remix.
Madonna and Shep always made magic.
This is my all time favorite Madonna song and video ❤💓💕😍😍😍😍😍
Dereck- first off, I love your channel! Probably one of my favorite Madonna songs and videos. Visually just stunning. A little trivia- the “dancers” in the video were mostly aerobic instructors and models. That’s the reason the dance moves became more of a step/workout routine. The main “worker bee” was a model simply called Cameron who rose to fame as the face of men’s Guess? Jeans. Keep the great videos coming!!
Madonna is the queen, keep the 80s coming..
I'd like to see some reactions to Cyndi Lauper..
"No one here is shy about sex, I'm a scorpio, you know, I am freaky" loved this. I'm taurus by the way 😝
This was her best period IMHO she looked great here
Yet ANOTHER David Fincher masterpiece!
There’s two versions of this song. The other is more instrumental, and the musicians in the video make more sense in the video. Oh Madonna 💜💜💜
This is the edit of the Shep Pettibone remix. Listen to the 7" Remix, which is a more "enhanced" album version.
This edit of Shep's has always been my favorite version because of the beats and loops
MADONNA is the template for female singers today .. she wrote the book
It’s a crime this song peaked at #2.
You are always handsome dereck
I am obsessed by his arm lol. Dont even know why
Dereck has a nice body
Oh yeahhh
Never know dereck face might get red
Something's going on with his nipples - - maybe pierced?
She’s a master in this industry !! ❤️
*QUEEN OF POP* ♥️
Oh, the many live versions of this song...
I recommend three, so you can experience the versatility:
1) from the are-Invention Tour
2) from the Blonde Ambition Tour
3) from the MDNA tour
Uhhh what about the VMA performance of this song....that's probably one of the most iconic VMA performances ever....the opening of her silhouette of her posing with the chair and then coming down the stairs meeting up with Donna and Niki....ICONIC!!!
Always my fav song by Madonna!!!! Have danced to this SOOOO many times! Also, the futuristic video is fabulous! I love the whole hard, cold industrial sprockets, imagery in this.
The aesthetics of this video was inspired by german expressionism, and it recreates Fritz Lang movie Metropolis and Tamara Lempicka's art deco paintings. The final line about the heart and the mind is a quote from Metropolis. The video depicts the male and the female world. A group of men working in a factory where there are no feelings, as if they were machines themselves, working in a hard, suffocating environment. On the other side Madonna represents the female side (the cat is an obvious symbol) and at some point she penetrates the male world, but in order to do that she has to find the male side of her personality (the part where she's dancing dressed as a man). Then she provokes the awakening of one of the workers from his dehumanizing submission. She starts to sing and one of the workers hears her voice. She encourages him to express himself and that provokes a riot. So the song is about expressing yourself but also about understanding why we do the things we do and why sometimes our feelings are disconnected from our actions and we become a cogwheel in the social machine. It's also about being honest to your lover and most of all to yourself. And of course it's a feminist song about empowering women. She is saying "you can be a feminist and enjoy sex". And that was very controversial. Some feminists said she was degrading women by showing her chained to the bed, but she explained that the woman in the video is a woman in charge cos as a woma there was nothing wrong in praising a good man. She was chained to her desire. This was a groundbreaking feminist song and very controversial video.
I still love the rhythm and bass arrangement for this track. The syncopated bass and snares.... love it!
That bass line is everything
Still waiting for the confessions tour :(
As am I. 😎
He's already done it! Check his channel - UPDATE: ok technically only the 1st song from the tour
🙋🏻♀️
Videos reach their creative peak in 1989. They've not changed since. 80s' were an amazing era!!!!! The80sWereGreat
Madonna and David Fincher one of the iconic duos in music video history
I love that you do some much research behind the songs. And I love Madonna because she tackles issues that almost no other pop artist will, from gender norms, sexuality, spousal abuse (Till Death Do Us Part), child abuse (Oh Father), reproductive rights (Papa Don't Preach), gun reform (God Control), etc. Many of her songs have messages and she is able to reach people, without making them feel preached to, because she matches them to fun, danceable music. Madonna is an activist and her songs make people feel heard and empowered.
This song is a Masterpiece from madonna
After this video, Express yourself - Live From Truth or Dare is a Must Be Seen Video ❤️❤️❤️
I'm waiting for The Confessions Tour reaction
He alreadt reacted to the Confessions opening
Express Yourself is considered a women empowerment anthem.
Ironically, when the video was released in 1989, Feminists reacted badly, Madonna defended herself by saying that she wanted to be chained
and that she was in charge
This video is in my top five Madonna videos. Here's a little fact. It was the most expensive music video at the time. Costing over five million dollars.
Highly precised and effective storytelling in a not so literal sense. The song itself is one that I loved for about 25 years so having first heard it early in my teenage years on the radio. Later, I have sang and danced to "Express Yourself" many times especially highly diverse gay crowds/places.
The original version with the trumpets, the album version, I cannot find the video anywhere on CZcams. That's the best version. 🥺 Omygosh I love it I love I LOVE IT! 💪🕺❤💥🔥
Omg please do share if found!
@@DereckReacts I think you have to reach out to Warner Brothers about it. 😫🥺
If memory serves her label, Warner Brothers, didn't want to provide the huge budget for the video she wanted to make so she financed it herself. Reportedly a million dollars, one of the hugest at that time. And it became one of her biggest hits.
Amazing song ! Amazing Queen ! She is a legend ✨✨❤️✨✨✨✨✨
this is the video that cemented Madonna's status as a mega superstar, if there was any question beforehand. by then there was no doubt she'd be around for a long time.
I'm not sure if you have watched BLOND AMBITION TOUR live performance of this song... she recreated the video. It's classic Madonna performance! :)
Mmmmmmmmm “freaky Dereck” I like it
Empowering the woman and girls when it comes to love life
The message of the song
She’s good dancing in Express yourself 💃
The icon of a decade.
This video was originally made to the album version of this song, which is a bit different and has a brass section. This is why those trumpet and saxophone players appear in the video but can't be heard.
You can find the video with the album version on the "Immaculae Collection" DVD.
DIVI TV they mostly played the 7” edit. It was the album version with a little more punch 🥊
Yes, they did play this 7" remix.
I gotta say although I do love this mix there are also some aspects to the original album version that I actually like better.
the power of Madonna
Probably my favorite Madonna song ❤️
🖤♥️🖤♥️ I Luv Lov Love Luve this damn song Soo much!!!. . ( such a strong empowering message!!) 💪💪💪💪
LOL!!!! Even though this doesn't have captions options yet, but I can easily read your lips that you said, "Guys, if this doesn’t get you up and dancing- something is wrong with you." I just L O L! I truly have enjoyed your commentaries on ALL of Madonna's videos on here. I am SO THRILLED that you are so... likable and have the same opinions and I just go "Hell, yes! I SO agree with ya!!!" Keep 'em coming, Dereck! __
n/
I loved watching your reaction to this video! Your smile and facial reactions were great. It was really fun to witness the way you were getting into the song! "If this doesn't make you get up and dance, something is wrong with you!" YES!!! I think this is my favorite reaction video from you so far! Keep 'em coming, Mr. Scorpio!!!
Also, keep in mind, Madonna is the ORIGINAL! That's why we all fell in love with her!!
What a bad little girl with a seriously wicked talent!!
Back then, Women were still climbing their way up and it was the beginning of the whole metrosexual thing. Crapload of symbolism in this one... the host here is correct.
"Express Yourself" was the most expensive music video ever made up to that point (summer of 1989) ! The music video made by film director David Fincher (Seven, House Of Cards) had a budget of 10 millions U.S. dollars. A record only broken years later by Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson's duo "Scream"'s music video in may of 1995. it's still the 3rd most expensive music video today only behind Scream and Madonna's own music video for the James Bond film "Die Another Day".
"Express Yourself" is my favorite Madonna song and music video. She was on fire there. I was horrified when I knew that this single wasn't going to be released in my home country, french Sire Records branch prefer to wait for Cherish to be released 2 months later as the 2nd single from the album after Like A Prayer, skipping "Express Yourself". I still can't get over my rage over this. Thankfully, when I went on vacation in Portugal that summer, I bought the "Express Yourself" single there.
I love your reaction Dereck❤️ she owned female empowerment before it was a thing. So much symbolism in this amazing video which was the most expensive to produce at the time. Her multiple looks are just phenomenal and notice the similarity to the live performance in Blonde Ambition. Regarding the chains , I remember Madonna saying she was “chained to her desires”😉 so in the end she fulfills her fantasy.
TKS you know how to explain, and it shows that you understand a lot of music. from Buenos Aires Argentina
This is based on the movie Metamorphosis from the 1920's.
Upon release it was the most expensive music video ever made... Still today, 3 out of the top 4 most expensive music videos ever made are by Madonna...
I've always thought that the older man was her husband, that she was the trophy wife who was ornamental, chained, and neglected. Settling for second best. Then she decides: no. She lures the most virile of all the workers in the company, dons the executive suit, and calls him to her with the proverbial milk of "milk and honey." While all the other men are distracted, fighting among themselves, the alpha male slips out and joins her in the penthouse, where she is waiting. The husband, down on the factory floor, realizes one of the men is missing, panics (look at his face in the video). The saxophones, the jazz elements, suggest sensuality fluidity, in direct opposition to the rigid, stifling order of factories, patriarchy, homophobia. The Darwinian "survival of the fittest" concept plays out and the strongest woman mates with the strongest, most virile man, leaving all the other "contenders" on the factory floor fighting. Passion prevails. The "strong hand" could be any hand, so long as it does not push you down. It can be a lover, it can be God, it can be self-pride. It does not have to come from another person. Whatever makes you feel empowered, like a "queen on a throne," and of course the "queen" could be a woman, trans, gay male.
Best video of all time!!!! I’m so happy he reviewed it 😍
The end qoute is everything
This was said to be very expensive to make. The video. Stephen Corbally super fan of MADONNA. aka #SteO!!✝️⚘🥰 Dublin City Central. I was 15 when got in to her music. I'm still a top fan. @ 49years old. I harmonize to alot of her well none ballads. She's Amazing. She helpt me come out. Love her. I sounds. Every Album she ever made. 🙏✝️⚘❤love super- fan. Dublin's city nth inner city. Ireland ♥️🙏
Hmmmmmm... Scorpio? Like me, interesting. :D Love this video! One of Madonna's greatest! Inspired by Metropolis (1926) and directed by Benjamin Button's David Fincher. Timeless.
You will love the Blond Ambition Version. Great videos, Dereck 🥰
The video is based off the famous silent film Metropolis...............................
Dude, what can we say.. Madonna at her best!!
Liked your reaction!
@DereckReaction
music video was inspired by the Fritz Lang classic film Metropolis (1927), and featured an epigraph at the end of the video from the film: "Without the Heart, there can be no understanding between the hand and the mind".
The video marked the first appearance of the Shep Pettibone remix of the song. It had a total budget of $5 million ($10.31 million in 2019 dollars), which made it the most expensive music video in history at the time it was made, and currently the third most expensive of all time.
About what you said, in her Reinvention Tour (2004) she begins with "Come on, boys, do you believe in love?"
This video is inspired by the movie "Metropolis"
Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master. The film's message is encompassed in the final inter-title: "The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart".
Yes! You tell ‘em. Millennials often incorrectly interpret “Express Yourself” as being all about sex. It was so much more than that.
Love the reaction, once again an open and frank reaction to life as it is. keep up these reacts 😚 ps. when do we get to see the double nipple piercings 🤩🤩
Queen 4 ever
Madonna is a LEO. I'm Sagittarius!
bravo you get the message !!!
“I can get freaky...”. I’m even more in love with you! 😜
“The white stuff”. Dereck you made me laugh out loud. 😂 Thanks for that! Enjoyed your reaction!
Good reaction and very thoughtful comments
