Sleigh ride - Leroy Anderson - Contrabass Clarinet perspective

- So there is a lot of stuff wrong in this video.
First of all I actually did not intend to blow up as much as this did. So I kinda half assed my performance, I was sending this to a friend who I was texting at the time.
Second. YES I SEE THE COMMENTS, the trumpets at my school did not know the word practice.
Third , for whatever reason I took a breath in every note, and for the people saying I was playing w a shoelace, please note that the ligature that came with the contra was WAYY too big, so I did the alternate move and used a shoelace. For about 95% of the school year I would always have to take off my shoelace off my shoe and tie it around my mouthpiece, then when I was done I would put it back on my shoe on top of putting away my instrument, music, and this stool that weighed like 300 lbs.
In everything I would like to thank you for watching, this video is wild and crazy but I always reference this video every time I hear sleigh ride. So thank you for watching Buh bye đ«
I have to regret to inform you all that I no longer play the contrabass clarinet. I have graduated and parted ways with that beautiful majestic instrument. :( (also it kinda belonged to the school)
Congrats on graduating! Iâll still be tuning into your content :)
congratulations on graduating!!
NOOOO THIS IS THE WORST HEARTBREAK EVER
Congrats thoufh
Yeah... I know. I had to part ways with my nice silver Bach trumpet when I graduated. So sad...
At my school thereâs a broken contrabass clarinet that needs fixing
And i think itâs the only contrabass instrument in my school.. (also I donât play clarinet i play bass trombone in my band)
How you kept a straight face as the trumpets absolutely massacred this song, I will never know LOL
Eventually when they keep messing up run after run after run, you start to just be frustrated because you can tell they haven't been practicing
*cough our vibraphone player cough*
I can hear those trumpet struggling.
as a trumpet player i am cringing listening to that trumpet section
@@wobb9162 same lol
Yeah, I had to play this for our school, we were so bad one of the second trumpets had to switch to 1st so our teacher could hear us. But in my defense, I have braces and that pretty much reset my skill to day 1, so I had to re learn everything
@@wobb9162 same
@@wobb9162 same lol
As a trumpet player, I would like to apologize on the behalf of these trumpets, and I would also like to help tune them :D
As a (alto) saxophone player, thank you. I have to sit in front of trumpets and hearing them mess up and blame it on my section is so infuriating.
As a trumpet player who is not nearly as bad as these players in the vid, (not to toot my own horn), we disown of these players. They are merely trombones trying a trumpet after 1 week of learning.
the rest of the band is good, then you got middle school trumpets
holy cow at like 0:50 this comment really hit
LOL
Right lol
I never played sleigh ride on my trumpet, but I must say that it must be difficult. Whenever I hear a band play sleigh ride the trumpets bomb it.
haha if these were trumpets in my middle school they would be the best there. At the high school they are definitely better than any of the trumpets there. I play trumpet and french horn there at the highschool sometimes and played 3rd cornet on sleigh ride... those trumpets man.
I'm crying for those trumpets rn đ I'm a trumpet myself
same...
I just donât know how itâs possible to be that unorganized
Me too. Iâm 7th grade and I play better than those high schoolers
@@scottwaldo that makes me very happy honestly, no section should sound that bad
What's it like being a trumpet?
As a brass player (bass trombone) i honestly havent SEEN a woodwindâs face when they play, its sort of like your jaw is jumping- it is fairly neat compared to the consistent lip buzzing i do
thats only for lower reeds cause they might go hella outta tune if they dont do that or the note voice cracks
@@chody07 interesting, thats pretty neat. Im gonna learn some woodwind instruments sooner or later so this information may help me quite a bit, thank you kind sir/maâam
@@chody07 itâs also with tuba, usually it happens to tubas, so it helps
Don't take a contrabass clarinet as the standard woodwind embochure. That mouthpiece is significantly larger than other standard woodwinds and takes a ton more air, so you really do need to take breaths after a few beats (speaking from experience). Looking at a soprano-bass clarinet or alto-bari sax, you'll see a more accurate representation for the standard woodwind embochure. Anything higher or lower than that has to do weird stuff
@@ethancampbell9096 does it take as much air as the flute or tuba
the trumpetsđ 0:56
and this is why you choose the harmonious instuments, kids.
thats trumpets for ya
đđđ
Me every time we have to perform in front of someone besides the janitor
The trumpets always ruin every song in my band too
when your ligature is literally a piece of string
Lmao fr
Thatâs the lig of the gods
đ€Ł
Itâs a boot lace. Many German bands would use string as ligatures and Still do,mouthpieces are usually designed to be used with a string, with large notches.Vandoren and Bambu make pre tied versions, and rovner leather ligatures provide a similar feel
You gotta use what you have, I once used a hair tie as a ligature because my ligature was to big, it surprisingly worked really well
I told myself I wasnât going to click on any more of these, but-contrabass clarinet!
Same! Rare to hear this instrument.
you sound 10x better than our band's contrabass cl player, she basically just blows air and there's no pitch-
(Assuming) At least the rest of your band isn't that way lmfao
theres barely any pitch on the contrabass anyway
@@duddymeow the contrabass clarinet player stood behind me and itâs an octave lower than the tuba it sounded so cool
@@duddymeow Yeah it almost sounds like just a rattely low pitched noise lmao
@@LOStm61 you need the right person to play it
i didnât know people actually played the contrabass clarinet this is amazing
Yeah, it's a less common instrument, but is still used frequently. You have the standards (flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, percussion), then the "color" instruments (oboe, French horn, bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor sax, Bari sax, tuba) and then the more niche but still widely used ones (English horn, contrabass clarinet, soprano sax, flugelhorn, bass trombone, contrabassoon, harp, piano, eb clarinet, alto clarinet, contralto clarinet). May be forgetting a few, but all of those are used regularly in wind ensembles. Smaller ones or beginners ones may only have the standard ones or standard + color instruments
@@ethancampbell9096 yeah iâve been in band for awhile i know all the instruments just never seen them used
AS A CONTRABASS CLARINET PLAYER, I SHALL DO THE HONORS. Yes. It is actually kinda sad, there are only two in our band including myself.
@@jolynesimpash highschool or college band?
@@colterbae Highschool. But our middle offers contra too, that is where I started. It was the same two clarinetists.
As a trumpet, I am soul crushed...
Same
I played contrabass in high school, so much fun!! Bellowing with the Tubas :)
Sometimes I wish I was a low, you may not get melody but its just fun. I'm just a stupid trumpet player.
@@zeb5641 đđ€Ł trumpet players arenât stupid lol. They are a necessary component to band culture so we remind ourselves to be humble, if we were all so darn Cocky bands would never learn to play together!! đ€Ł
I loved it
I love tuba players so much! Gonna start learning bari sax soon (I think) so I might get to sit by them sometimes!! :)
@@technoplanegobrrr there should be more bari sax/tuba players. Iâve always loved the sound that tubas made when played correctly. Too bad there arenât that many of them in any band. (Thereâs like 3-4 in mine)
little quick tip, don't breath after every note. I know its tempting but, you might start going out of time and you crack a lot more often. Keep you face set the entire time and only breath when you need to. Your part isn't hard but it sounds hard because of all the breathing. This is a tip for everyone for when you have a quarter note quarter rest pattern or something along those lines.
he might be changing his tonguing
xTypicalBurritox - my first thought also. Dude shouldnât be opening up and resetting his embouchure between every note. Strive for efficiency!
Agree. Not sure how much air you need to put through this though. But even so watching that's a bit unsettling.
yea they know :) also contra forever
Glad Iâm a drummer.
My CZcams feed really said âHey. Weâve noticed youâve liked things around this instrument so here.â As a contrabass player, and female (I say that in a sense of I donât see many female contra players if a band has them), I love this video
Bro the trumpets are making me wanna die bro tf đđ
I just started playing contrabass clarinet for clarinet choir and itâs actually easier than I thought but I tend to squeak going upâŠ
Bro the trumpetsâŠ
0:30 that's so deep and amazing-
Sheesh. Damn! Trumpets was just discovering new notes
I used to play bass clarinet and never had the chance to play one of these. It was my most favorite instruments ever...the lowest notes on these low woodwinds tickle your nose!! đ„°
Just imagine the amount of air you needâŠâŠ yeesh
Great video! I love listening to a musical piece from different instruments' perspective. There was a nice walking bassline there.
As a contrabass clarinetist, I love the accidental multiphonics lol. Also, nice ligature.
Love the passion @ 0:30!
Nice job, thanks for sharing your talent on that paperclip!
the trumpets lol
what a cool sounding instrument, respect from a tuba
Yes
Why is everyone obsessed with this song?
Can they not beđđnot trying to be mean too
it's Christmas đ
having to tie your reed to your mouth piece is a mood since none of the ligatures fit đ
I played bari sax for this piece multiple times and it's the same part. A really cool bass part though for us lower voices! :-)
Practice and keep it it up, you'll be in a professional orchestra some day!
I am literally bobbing back and forth to this one đ
What brand contra do you have? I have been looking for a cheaper one.
Is that a leather string youâre using as a ligature? How do you like it?
It is most likely a LeBlanc from what I can tell
I was watching this song and thinking about you breathing every note. Then I read your video description. Big like. 10/10
Interesting fact yall didnt know. When yhe intrument is that big it makes ur throat vibrate. U eventually get used to it and dont notice. I used to play barisax
making my checkpoint at the contrabass clarinet one đșđș
let's go, same part as the tuba, we'll played man
imma be honest when i saw the thumbnail at first glance i thought you were playing a sax upside down until i read the title. Sound great as well!

Grate job!! - bass clarinet player
Nah yt is stalking me or something because I literally got the sleigh ride music sheet for the Christmas season TODAY! And this was in my recommendationsđ
Oh I played this in high school. Flute, then bass clarinet.
Those trumpetsđ
You have such a clean sound! I donât know much about lower instruments (Iâm an alto sax player) but if I had to give any tips Iâd say maybe dont take your lips off the instrument as much? Low notes require a lot of air so I totally understand, but try to breathe less often! đđ
love to see another contra player
I play clarinet too
You actually have a better sound than most contrabass players.
The trumpets đšđšđđđ
Oh god, its happening again...the sleigh ride videos are being recommended
the trumpets đ
The trumpets lol đ
Ah yes CZcams recommending this to me in May
Awesome!!!
The Snoopy sweater makes it better
nice ligature đ

Oh god the trumpetsâŠ
I love the spaghetti decorations (Iâm messing around obv just yeah)
Great Job Leroy! Way cool.

damn the moving of the embouchure
We play with the tubas. Tune to the tubas.
Omg Im gonna play this in one week from now and Im a cornet 1. I don't sound anywhere near on what they sounded like here but man, thats one of my biggest nightmares. Btw im in middle school
Ah, please post the longer version⊠please?
no one is questioning that he's using a shoelace as a ligature? lmao
the ligature dont fit
Yes,string ligatures were common in Germany and mouthpieces are still made with large notches to support string ligatures.Vandoren and bambu both make string ligatures.Rovner ligatures also have a similar feel
I swear trumpets are always the section that doesn't have it together
I plated Contrabass Clarinet in HS and College. I miss it.
TwoSet Violin have a video where they try to guess who plays which instrument. I would love to nominate you as a wildcard entry.
Bro, same name, same typa video as me đ (you posted first)
yooo im doing oboe and English horn for this piece now and there's a contra there too
the thumbnail đł
As a contrabass player, did you often have to read the bass clarinet parts or were most of the pieces you played written with contra in mind?
No most of the time I read from bass clarinet parts
Oh my goodness guys stop judging the trumpets we play the exact same song for our Christmas concert and it is literally so difficult!
Fellas leave the trumpets alone XD, you know that stuff's hard and takes time to get good at
I played sleigh ride today on contrabass actually lol I sight read it because I hadn't played it beforehand
i always wanted to play the contrabass clarinet
ughhh god, trumpets, end my suffering
As an honor band trumpet I sincerely apologize for the other trumpets
Epic
Embouchure... rigggght ;)

Sounds like something from goosebumps.
Ahh my favorite paper clip
OMG YOU LOOK LIKE THAT ONE CHARACTER FRON THE POLAR EXPRESS
We have the same contrabass
Keep it up
Is no one talking about the fact that his ligature is a shoelace? I play alto sax and clarinet and I've never seen a shoe lace ligature.
The trumpets..đ
Nice Ligature lol
The one it came with didn't tighten, so I had to improvise lol
@@b-rycethechandler oof
@@b-rycethechandler what if it got wet and stuff? my bari doesn't always create the tightest ligature seal and sometimes a little spit will come out from the mpc
My high school band was pretty big about making sure everyone had this fancy ligature to get a particular tone. At least, with us soprano clarinets.
@@toastboi5106 I feel your pain. I've had a drip on my leg more than once
lmao taking a breath every note
As a tuba and trumpet player, HOW DOES A CLARINET WORK-
Reeds. Brass uses lip buzzing to produce tone, woodwinds use vibrating reeds (except the flute, which kinda uses lip buzzing as well.)
As a trumpet player I wonder what happened there
as a bass clarinet player i know the pain of squawking
this guy's last name is my first name, sick
Do you know the brand of the contrabass? I ask because I played clarinet, bass clarinet, and went to Area and second in state on Eb contra aka contra-alto, and it seems like the middle range notes are good but the lower notes sound a little muddy. Because your tone is good, I wonder if it may be the instrument such as a leak. Anyways, it is always good to see a fellow contra clarinet player who is not just put on contra because he or she is not the greatest on the regular, soprano clarinet.
I think its a Leblanc contrabass clarinet I believe its called, also lol its not the instrument that's having tone problems, the ligature that it came with didn't fit or tighten so I had to come up w something and voila I used my shoelace and it surprisingly works.
@@b-rycethechandler nice way to improvise. But like I mentioned, your tone IS good. But still muddy at the lower notes. Had the same problem when I Bb contra-bass. Good job nevertheless.
