  • Bird dog training without a shock collar continues as today we are working to continue laying the ground work for the "woah" command. This is something that I have gone back and forth on a lot. Most bird dog trainers I've researched and talked to use shock collars and belly bands to steady pointing dogs. By laying the foundation early, I believe I will be able to train this bird dog the woah command without using a collar.
This series will be different from any other we’ve done for a variety of reasons. What won’t be different is that it will be real, raw and unedited. We share the good, bad and ugly knowing they they all are important in order to make progress with a pup.

Nice to see bird dog training that includes a wagging tail and a dog that is enjoying the training.

You can always set 2-3 birds down. Flush 1, 2 then 3. Shape the behavior that there isn’t that one bird. Don’t chase the first bird you see.
She will need to be on a check cord. You need and assist to flush the bird, you in the cord. Block her access to the chase and guide her back into the scent cone

I am glad I found this video - have the same problem with the dog getting too excited + not bringing the thing she found, running away, coming without the dummy...
I am not a profi trainer like you - but I am struggeling + the most difficult thing is to check how much freedom i can let her and to 'fight' all these distractions!
I am training a 5 month old lagotto + up to now recall was perfect - but 1. she gets more self confident + 2. I want her to bring interesting things more reliable...

Thanks for your videos. I need to stop and take a step back with my 6 month old Gsp I was trying to “ keep” up with you and your dog. But it’s very clear I’m doing to much and expecting to much. Again thanks for saying her age that to me is extremely important to know.

6 months can be to early for some pups, generally spaniels and brittanys. Each dog is different though

Its always amazed me how you are able to direct your dogs with hand signals. I've watched dozens and dozens of your videos. How do you initially introduce your signals by hand in a way the dog understands

Hey Daren, we actually did an entire series on teaching a dog to handle! If you go on our page and go to playlists it is called "Cali... Keep On". It will show you start to finish how we go about teaching handling!
