  • After saying it in two videos, I decided to take a more detailed look at if the M1A2 Abrams tank is actually superior to the M808B Scorpion.

    The Scorpion can actually achieve speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. I'm curious where you got the 33 mph figure from, if you don't mind.
    Other than that, fantastic video! I'd definitely be one of those "it's from the future!" people, but given the information available, it's hard to argue with your conclusions. Would you ever consider doing another one of these, but comparing the Abrams with the Halo 5 M820 Scorpion (which does have a 120mm cannon)?

      The Scorpions Speed depends on variant, the M808 Scorpion could achieve a top speed of roughly 97kph whist the M808B for some reason loses top speed down to only 60kph.

    Halo scorpion tank features:
    2-second turret fire rate
    180° third person view
    .50 calibre turret
    Full titanium and ceramic hull
    1.5 second to turn 180°
    M1 Abrams features:
    Uranium and ceramic hull
    7-second fire rate
    Needs a commander to spot and give orders
    I don't know about everybody else, but I'd love to be able to view on 3rd person and have a clear 180° line of sight and be able to fire very quick and accurate

    I believe a Abrams could beat a scorpion more often than not in a engagement but I think a more fair fight is the Abrams against a grizzly. The abrams can f**k up a scorpion but a grizzly could do the same fairly easily to a abrams in direct combat. Great video and analysis btw.

  • @ISAFMobius18
    @ISAFMobius18 Před 4 lety +5

    I think one of the biggest advantage the Scorpion would have over the Abrams, is the Hull Down Position. in real tank battles, tall and large tanks have a very large profile and therefore, become a very big target for enemy tanks. The Scorpion is no exception, its high profile design means it would have trouble hiding itself behind cover. The Abrams having a smaller profile would be harder to hit and easier to hide. However, that being said, if the Scorpion managed to get into a defensive Hull Down position by hiding its lower hull behind an obstacle, such as a building or earthen embankment, and only exposing its turret above, it would dominate the battle. The Abrams can also do this but there are two disadvantages it has to overcome. First the Abrams has a manned turret, meaning if the turret were to be struck, the crew could possibly be knocked out and reduce the tank's combat ability. The Scorpion has a remotely operated turret from the driver's position, meaning if the turret was struck, there would be no threat to the crew member. The second Disadvantage for the Abram is the turret's size. If you look at the cross section from the front of an Abrams turret, its much wider and taller than the Scorpion turret. This means the Scorpion would have an easier time hitting the Abram's turret than vice versa. Of course both tanks risk the chance of their main gun being hit and damaged, but since the Scorpion crew member is in a safer position and not worried about incoming fire in a Hull Down position, they would have a cooler head and be able to return fire more accurately compared to the Abrams. But thats my two cents.

    Higher profile of the main gun on the scorpion also makes it an easy obvious target and once the main gun is destroyed there's really nothing the scorpion tank can do to the M1 Abrams where as the Abrams has a lower profile allowing it to shield itself behind environmental objects.

      Every modern tank uses a titanium-ceramic composite as armor the abrams uses a armor composite called chobham armor which is made of nylon micromesh titanium-ceramic composites bonded together, and the abrams also has uranium depleted armor on the side next to the turret and it has a 120mm cannon able to take out other tanks with its sabot and multi purpose rounds. TL;DR the abrams is just as armored and powerful as the scorpion.

    I’d like to make a note for the Scorpion is that it can be hot dropped anywhere via a pelican I believe, thus giving it unparalleled rapid deployment. We can see from cinematic you had that as soon as that Scorpion is dropped, it starts firing. Where as you don’t see helicopters lugging around tanks causally, not even APCs.
    So I believe that is a point for the Scorpion’s rapid deployment, but on a head to head your point still stands.

    I’d like to think that with improved technology in the set timeline, there may be factors such as propellants and materials used in the manufacturing of the M512 that would make the velocity of a 90mm round more effective at higher velocities, ultimately resulting in a lighter tank with similar firepower to that of a tank with a much larger payload. Granted, this is in a futuristic and fictional universe, I take reference from the muzzle velocity charts for weapons in the halo universe. More specifically that of the M68 Gauss Canon which has a muzzle velocity measured in 0.897/Ls (Light Speed). Notably the two weapons are significantly different in comparison, but the advancement in technology is something that can’t be overlooked when looking at the armament of all weapons including that of the M512.

    I mean, you can take out a Scorpion by shooting it enough times with guns that use 7.62x51mm ammunition FROM THE FRONT, and it's also vulnerable to anti-materiel rifles (again, from the FRONT), so the armor on that thing is frankly quite doodoo. It "might" have better all-around protection I guess, but small arms fire shouldn't be able to take out a main battle tank to begin with, so....
    The comparison to 8.8cm KwK 36 or KwK 43 is a bit comical and unfortunate. Even if we were to assume the gun fires some space-age HEAT round with super advanced penetration power (I can only assume, as it absolutely does NOT fire a solid Tungsten slug as they claim, as they won't make explosions), it doesn't make sense for them to limit the bore size to 90mm, as larger diameter shell would naturally have a higher capacity for explosives, which directly impact its power, and... This is an MBT. Its main purpose is to encounter any and all land vehicles and defeat it, so it would possess the best possible, self-propelling gun available. As technology improves to address recoil, it would make more sense to go for something like 152mm shells, considering the Covenant clearly possess superior firepower AND armor, and ammo conservation granted by smaller shells would be pointless if it won't survive to use them.
    Also, with literally 500 years of technological advancement, I would hope they've made engines that are more efficient and more powerful than the stuff we throw on tanks designed 40-50 years ago. The Russian T-14 can already achieve 90km/hr (56 mph) on highway, and 60km/hr (37 mph) offroad. (funny enough, it CAN be retrofitted with a 152mm cannon as well)
    Dunno, Scorpion "MBT" has always bothered me and I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice how bad the design for that is.

      Has to be balanced for gameplay somehow

    • @SuicidalRevolver
      @SuicidalRevolver Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for choosing to ignore the majority of my criticism, which is of design and lore, and instead only addressing the balancing aspect, on a 9 month old comment. Clearly you only read the first couple sentences but I'll humor the balance aspect.
      1. Halo games are more than capable of distinguishing different damage zones. I don't think it's too much to ask for a more realistic approach where ballistic guns weaker than the Sniper Rifle's 14.5mm rounds can only damage the tank when firing at its sides, rear, or top. Considering how effective plasma is at weakening and punching through armor, it would also be interesting to see them deal bonus damage to said weakpoints, as opposed to the current near total immunity to anything short of the Fuel Rod gun (which is about as effective against the Scorpion as it should be).
      2. Changing the bore size to something more realistic doesn't need to have an impact on its firepower. The explosions from its "90mm gun" wouldn't feel out of place at all if it was fired from a 152mm gun. Halo is rather guilty of using implausible calibers for its weapons, like the DMR sharing the exact same ammo with the Assault Rifle (7.62x51) but dealing significantly more damage.
      3. Mobility of the Scorpion is all over the place from game to game, and even if it were to move as quickly as the T-14, it's still quite slow in the pace of Halo.

      Yeah no... if it takes 3 Rounds to take out a wraith which has 2 Inches of Armour and isn’t a tank at all, that is pathetic, the Scorpion wouldn’t do anything to the Abrams at all frontally due to the obscene amount of armour it needs to go through and considering a good majority of the components is classified still, the armour could be stronger than we may believe and considering they shrug off RPG-7s and AT Mines, the Scorpion isn’t going to do much... and it’s rounds aren’t hypersonic.. compared to an APFSDS-T round from an Abrams which travels over 1,400 meters a second while the Scorpion’s round which is typically an outdated APHE travels at 375 meters a second... which is ineffective in almost every way...

      @@Murasaki_Saya to answer both questions I wasn’t able to reply to recently, yes most certainly, having 2ft thick armour isn’t anything to be impressed about considering most modern MBT armour is usually also 2ft thick but lean to a good meter or so so that point isn’t exact but I doubt the armour on the scorpion and wraith weren’t designed to take direct tank to tank combat considering the wraith is an assault gun carrier and not an actual tank, it’s more of mobile mortar if anything... the scorpion is very easy to disable and can’t fight against even an Abrams with APHE, it will fail miserably trying to head on a tank with armour that can stop mostly anything, the wraith can certainly kill the Abrams easily but only in a circumstance where it sees the Abrams first and if the tank can’t move away in time, the main gun on an Abrams is the M256 Smoothbore Cannon or Rh-120, it fires HEAT-FS and APFSDS, both of which are extremely powerful and can go through most things, for example the M829A1 APFSDS can go through over 500mms of armour.. while both the wraith and scorpion may have 2ft thick armour which is doubtful considering it has to be in certain areas, I doubt even it can stop APFSDS, it takes 3 rounds to gut a wraith with APHE from the scorpion so I remotely doubt it can stop a APFSDS round flat out, in terms of crew, the Abrams has better situational awareness and such, they have a variety of equipment and stuff that may or may not be present on the scorpion nor wraith although I doubt the wraith even has Thermals or such. In the end of the day, the Abrams can certainly take on both domestic and foreign vehicles no matter the size or shape, if the scorpion can cripple a scarab by shooting its legs, then the Abrams can do the same, no different.
