    You forgot to mention the biggest improvement of the m820 scorpion.
    It replaced the 90mm gun with a 150 mm ETC (Electro Thermal Chemical) gun. ETC guns offer improved performance and greater consistency of the fired rounds performance when compared to standard tank guns.

    • @Trigger003
      @Trigger003 Před 3 lety +37

      The M820 Scorpion is an overall more realistically-accurate evolution to the Scorpion tank platform with a turret that not only looks more logical and even has a crew hatch that could fit MG platform for better firing arcs (and spare the poor gunner the inevitable hearing loss due to being put so close to the muzzle of the goddamn main gun).
      But noooooooooo some people have to say that iT's ToO GeNeRiC and iT DoEsN't LoOk LiKe A ScORpIOn.
      the M808S in Halo Wars 2 however looks to be a happy medium between the original M808 and newer M820 design, which seems to be a running theme with most of the UNSC designs in that game, combining both the old and the new.

    These most detailed breakdowns show just how much more advance most UNSC vehicles are than many realize or give credit for especially in regards to the internal aspects of the designs. As the saying goes "Don't judge a book by it's cover"; or in this case "Don't judge a tank by it's chassis". Otherwise it may blow up in your face both figuratively and literally.
    Once again excellent video.

    • @QuantumAscension1
      @QuantumAscension1 Před 3 lety +25

      If we were talking about next-generation tanks IRL (i.e. whatever replaces the M1 Abrams in a decade or two) then perhaps, yes the Scorpion would appear advanced. But 500 years in the future I would at least hope our tanks are running with coilguns or railguns. Hell, the Warthog has a Gauss cannon variant, so why the Scorpion is using post-WWII cannon technology via 90mm APHE shells is confusing to say the least. Even the newer scorpions only use a electrothermal chemical gun; that's something we're experimenting on with our modern day tanks now and likely to implement in the next generation. But, I suppose I can forgive this oversight given that basically every other facet of UNSC technology is barely more advanced than what we have today.

    • @Prestiged_peck

      @@QuantumAscension1 the idea is that ground warfare tech stagnated in favor of space borne tech, they were fighting terrorists with little no no armor for 3 centuries, they didn't need rail guns, regular weapons did the job perfectly, and we didn't have the battery tech for ultra small scale railguns until the covenant came. When your tech is generations ahead of your enemies you tend not to worry about making it better, ya know?

    • @QuantumAscension1
      @QuantumAscension1 Před 3 lety +7

      admiral_peck 7 While the level of military stagnation is kinda unrealistic even in the most peaceful of times, I can understand it. I used to think it was silly that the UNSC were still using gunpowder-based firearms in the 2550’s, but I eventually came to realize that often times a simple time-tested system is the more practical one, so fair enough. But then what about the Gauss warthog? How come a coilgun can be scaled down and powered for a light tactical vehicle but it can’t be scaled and powered by a main battle tank? What about the Spartan Laser or the M99 Stanchion Gauss anti-material rifle? It just seems inconsistent

    • @Bird_Dog00
      @Bird_Dog00 Před 3 lety +7

      The S-tank can in a pinch, but you will realy have task overload. Combining the positions of driver and gunner works on the S-tanks because of the way the gun is mounted. You can't drive and shoot at the same time anyway.
      But if you add the responsibilites of the commander to the mix, it gets just too much.
      The big advantage of having seperate commander and gunner is that the gunner can engage a target - something that takes your full concentration regardeless of your equipment - while the commander kepps his eyes out for the next target/threat.
      Quite a number of nations in WW2 found out the hard way that combining commander and gunner in one person is a realy bad idea...

    • @Eleolius
      @Eleolius Před 3 lety +4

      Technology can help with task overload but humans only have so much attention. Three man crew is as small as any amount of technology will make feasible... if you can do better than that you can have drone tanks instead.

      Part of that is because the scorpion is supposed to use a two-man crew. One driving the other one theoretically being the gunner and commander. Of course for gameplay reasons though there’s only ever one person crewing the tank.

    • @Seriona1
      @Seriona1 Před 2 lety

      The lore states that the Scorpion needs a bare min crew of 2. I am assuming driver and gunner. Russian tanks in real life use 2 crews because they use auto loaders. The lore also states that a single Spartan can crew the Scorpion with AI assistance which tells me the AI is driving while the Spartan is the gunner. The game for whatever reason allows a single Marine or Soldier to do it for game play purpose.

Its Easy to produce, has myriad of variants, , 1-2 man crew means losing lower numbers of valuable crewmen when a tank is destroyed, and even can punch through a wraith’s shields and 2 feet of armor in a few shots. Thanks to being extremely bored at work, I cooked this thing up - a good TL;DR is the sSorpion is absolutely no match for any piece of contemporary armor.
      Like it or not, the fundamental fact is everything in Halo was made up by game designers who make video games for a living, not weapons. Halo did put some more effort into designing relatively realistic systems than most other games would, but I doubt they had someone like Eugene Stoner or Philip Lett on staff to design the weapons technology.
      There is basically no lore about the Scorpion’s targeting systems other than the gameplay reality they’re used at extremely short range against enemies that don’t bother with concealment or camouflage, and even come equipped with bright glowing uniforms and guns to aim at. No comparison with modern tanks can be made.
      The lore about the armor being a titanium and ceramic composite is pretty cool. As it turns out there is real world interest in titanium armors and they have immense promise. Scorpion armor would be very effective against HEAT, AP, and plasma. I have no idea how thick it is or what they would translate to in terms of Rolled Homogeneous Armor thickness, meaning simple steel plate. I am certain the Scorpion is tough, although it doesn’t seem too tough. A pair of 102mm rockets reliably slay it. Meanwhile in the real world I have seen no shortage of combat footage where current tanks routinely take three or more 150 mm rockets to put down. There is no doubt in my mind any 20th century main battle tank, like a T72, could handily knockout a Scorpion with little trouble.
      The Scorpion fails in terms of secondary defensive systems. It doesn’t have slat armor, it doesn’t have side skirts, it doesn’t have reactive armor, it doesn’t have dazzlers, it doesn’t have a protection system, it doesn’t have laser or radar sensors, it doesn’t even have a simple smoke generator to make itself harder to see. Tanks from the 40s have that! All tanks made today either have nearly all of this things come either stock or as part of the standard upgrade package that everyone purchases.
      As for the gun, the gun on the Scorpion is just laughable. It has a 90mm bore, only launches high explosive (A quote from gameplay says tungsten, but visuals plus all the lore entries say HE), and achieves a velocity lower than a 9mm handgun gets! Installation 00 tested that. I didn’t even know it was possible to make a tank shell with that low velocity! Real tank shells start at 4x the velocity and some go about 11 times as quickly. A real modern tank such as a T72 comes with a 125 mm gun and its lowest velocities are over 2000 ft./s with some getting 5500 ft./s. The 90mm bore size of the gun is baffling. There is no reason to go that small. You simply get more capabilities with a bigger gun most importantly your shells can become much more powerful, you can just do more things because you can pack more into the case and the projectile. And if for any application you need to fire a narrower projectile, you can just use a sabot. I know one of the cannon excuses for the small bore is it gave better performances for the anti-personnel and fire support missions the tank was originally designed for against rebels, but in that case again, why not just use sabots and design shells with lighter propellant charges instead of stick the whole platform with a woefully underpowered primary armament.
      There is no reason to deliberately underpower the gun. 90mm HE would be minimally effective against any contemporary tank. A 90mm HEAT or AP would be underpowered, but at least right for the job. And I know the Wraith has 2 feet of frontal armor, which is correct, but it’s only about 600mm, and all modern tanks have the equivalent of over 1000 mm of frontal protection, making it not at all impressive, either to achieve or defeat. A base T72 has 500mm equivalent, and that’s considered flimsy.
      The Scorpion is also not especially mobile. There’s a top speed of 33 mph which is actually less than that of the T72, nevermind turbine tanks such as the T80 or the M1. The only thing it does better is range, getting more operational range than any stock tank today but that advantage is significantly reduced when additional fuel drums are added, as is a common option.
      The reason I use the T72 as a point of comparison is because it is the most common model of modern tank in the world, being two generations advanced from World War II tanks, and having contemporary upgrade packages that remain competitive. It provides a useful baseline control to compare the Scorpion with. The Scorpion does not measure up well at all.
      The Sorpion tank as presented in Halo is no match for basically any post World War II piece of armor. It’s actually pretty hilariously pathetically hopelessly outmatched.

      @@Mortablunt So, the Scorpion could be a nice gag premium for World of Tanks and War Thunder as it wouldn't even and in top tier but just along the first MBTs like T-55, M48 and Leopard 1.
      Probably cannot beat a T-10 or Maus in a frontal duel.
      Let's be honest, yes, the scorpion was designed to look cool , be balanced for gameplay and allow the player to feel powerful. Not to be a realistic weapon. The Warthog is also a hillarious downgrade from a Humvee.
      Ironically, the Wraith gets away with more due being an alien artilery. Yes, 600mm of frontal armor might not be much for modern standards, but the Covenant have the magic "nanolaminate armor" , so it's likely even more protected.

In a real life tank you'd never want something like that because it gives you a taller target profile and also creates a weak point that would get easily damaged by enemy fire. great stuff man, one last issue thst was not addressed is how they fixed the loss of power issue that comes with seperating the four tracks. as instead of powering only 2 sets of tracks the scorpion must power 4 individual large and wide tracks even by todays standards both independently and in tandem, 2 sets of transmissions 2 sets of drive axels that must function as also pivoting axle points, the amount of stress on these componets could lead to frequent and catastrophic failure in drive systems through regular wear and tear let alone put in an austere or even hostile enviroments, the grizzly with its 5 track configuration being a great concern with these issues as well, in game this explains relatively slow speed for the chasis but also presents this major hurdle of engineering, my best guess is that they had to use a super tough tungsten metal alloy for these componets as tungsten has excellent wear and tear as well as dealing with excessive heat and pressures...tungsten titanium 50 alloy? what do you think?

    Loved this episode. As a tank enthusiast this was a godsend for me. I love the Scopion and I see it as the best tank by design ever. Though i do have 2 issues with it.
    The cannon of the M808 series wasn't much of an advancement after 400-500 years into the future. 90mm HV cannons were used back during the later years of WW2. Also, Tungsten is a common use as a tank penetrator, but, once again, 400-500 years into the future, I'm pretty sure Depleted Uranium rounds would be standard, if not fully replaced. DU penetrators are a lot better than Tungsten. While Tungsten is denser by .2 grams, DU penetrators can self sharpen during penetration, heat up, and even ignite and cause fires once through. During the Gulf War, tank operators fighting against Iraqi forces had both Tungsten and DU rounds but were instructed to use the DU rounds only if they encounted T-72 tanks.
    The other issue is the crew of 1. SUPER bad idea. If only 1 crew member has control of everything of the tank, they can do whatever with the tank. War is frightening, no matter the era. Any man, no matter how well trained they are, can break down in combat. And if that solder is driving a vehicle weighing dozens of tons with a 90mm or 152mm HE stick breaks down, well, you dont want be around when it happens. Also, its inefficient to have just 1 person do the driving and shooting, even if the systems are linked to a Neural Lace. Driving, spotting, and shooting would be so difficult. Sure it saves 2-4 men but doing all of their jobs would be a nightmare. Dodging incoming fire while aiming is near impossible.

Its lore was designed mostly by people who don't understand tank design, but instead wanted things that sound cool... which is fine for a fictional tank in a video game franchise. The issue is sometimes people claim it would make a good irl tank, which just isn't true. Quad tracks are not a good design choice, the rounds it supposedly fires really aren't great by modern standards, and you have to kind of lie or fudge the truth to make it sound like it's good. Throwing a slug really fast doesn't make the round good. A shell that puts shrapnel in the crew of an enemy vehicle is a good round.

    I never played a Halo game but tanks are something I'm very interested in, so I still watched with great interest.
    When comparing some of the design choices in this vehicle to RL tanks a few points came up:
    Note, this is just a random nerd making observations and comparisons with RL tank design for the heck of it, with my modest kowlege on the subject matter.
    It is neither meant as a citique of this video, nor of the artistic choices by the developers of this franchise.
    Suspension: 4 tracks instead of 2. Not a choice I would have made.
    You basicaly double the points of failure by having 4 instead of 2 electric motors, drive spockets, idlers and track tensioning systems, while reducing the amount of track in contact with the ground, thus increasing ground presure.
    In none of the in game footage shown here did the scorpion cross terrain that wouldn't have been managble with a more conventional suspension.
    Improved firing arks in uneven tarrain could have been achieved with hydrogas suspension as used in the Challenger 2, or a hydraulic suspension like the one used on the swedish Stridsvagn 103.
    Engine: Nothing wrong per se with a gas turbine. They are compact, lightweight and reliable.
    There are some disadvantages though: A gas turbine uses almost as much fuel when idling as when your vehicle is cruising. Without a auxilary motor to power the systems when stationary (for example in an overwatch position) you will quickly rund dry.
    Also, the high volume of air used by gas turbines requires large air filters that will clog up much faster than in a tank with a diesel engine.
    During Desert Storm, M1 Abrams tanks often had to stop every hour to clean out the air filters while on tha march through the desert (off course, in a pinch they could have run for longer, but you don't want to risk stubling into a combat situation with your air filters fully cloged-up...).
    Hydrogen as fuel: High energy density, can be literaly made in-situ from the universes most abundant chemical compound (provided you have a suitable power source at hand), and clean.
    It is also difficult to handle and store. Liquid, it requires constant cooling to prevent evaporation, and as a pressurised gas, it has 2 nasty habits:
    For one, it constantly difuses out of every tank you can make, so you have to carefully vent the space around the gas tank to prevent build-up of explosive gas mixtures, and it causes hydrogen embrittlement in many materials it touches.
    If it has to be a gas as fuel, I recommend methane.
    But I would have gone with a liquid. for the much, much easier handling.
    Armour: Modern armour is a secret the militaries guard very closely. I also have no idea of the material science of the Halo universe, so I can't comment on this much.
    Just one note: Some tanks, like the Challenger have an outer skin, covering the armour. So looking at the tank's outer shape does not necessarily tell you anything about the actual armour layout.
    Armament: If you have a smooth-bore gun, you have to fin-stabilise the projectile.
    For armour piercing, kinetic amunition, you pretty much have to use a APFSDS. Making a more conventional slug with stabilisation fins gives you all the complexity and drawbacks of APFSDS without any of the benefits.
    Modern 120mm APFSDS have a muzzle velocity of about 1600 meters per second and a projectile weight of about 7-10 kilo.
    With a 90mm gun, you run into 2 problems: 1. for the same muzzle energy, you'd need a lot more muzzle velocity, probably more than you can manage with chemical propellant.
    2. even then, you still run into the probem of shorter penetrators (the only reason for using a smaller gun is to reduce weight and amunition size for increased amunition capacity and easier handling) having inherently less penetration.
    Using something like a railgun could help in that regard.
    I was also surprised about the apparent lack of a HE or HEAT-MP round.
    I have to stress, that there is nothing inherently wrong with using a 90mm gun. If it does what you need it to do, then making the gun bigger just makes your life harder for no real benefit. And if you don't want to use chemical effect amunition anyway, then the point of lager callibre equaling more explosive filler in the projectile becomes moot.
    To make a RL comparison: IN WW2 the US forces were highly reluctant to switch from the 76mm gun to the 90mm for as long as the 76 was mostly doing ok, because of increased weight and size of both the gun and the amunition.
    If you need more penetration, try improving the projectile first. Then increase muzzle velocity. And only if that's not enough consider using a lager callibre.
    The lack of a coaxial MG in the standard version of the Skorpion is imho an unforgivable oversight.
    Turret design:
    Again, not a choice I would have made. Increasing the hight makes your vehicle more top-heavy. It also increases the surface area you have to armour, increasing overall weight.
    The "neck" of the turret is also vulnerable. Basicaly, it's just one huge shot-trap.
    The unmanded turret with an autoloader however is a perfectly valid choice, even though I haven't yet been converted to the 'unmaned turret fandom'...
    One-man crew:
    Yea, no. No matter how good your interface, you will run into the issue of task overload. Steering the vehicle, scanning for targets/threats, managing communications and servicing targets is going to overload your crewman, no matter what. And if you have a platoon of tanks, god help the poor sod in the lead vehicle, also having to co-ordinate 3-4 other tanks...
    3 man crew it is for me.
    This is something that does make sense in the context of a video game's game mechanics, but not outside of that.
    I would end with the note that, if you design a scifi tank for a video game, you usally go with what looks cool and visually distinct, and not necessarily with what is realistic and practical.
    In that, I'd say the designer of the Scorpion was successfull.
    Any comparison to RL vehicle and/or technology can only realy be done "just for fun".

      @tranquile8046 Před 3 lety

      The 90mm gun should have more or less the muzzle energy of the m1a2 Abrams' 120 mm gun. Considering the likely armor advances in 5 centuries, this seems somewhat disappointing. Also the muzzle velocity is DREADFUL, taking about 3 seconds to travel a kilometer.

    • @Bird_Dog00
      @Bird_Dog00 Před 3 lety

      @@tranquile8046 I assume achieving the muzzle velocity of a 120mm high velocity gun with a 90mm will be somewhere between difficult and next to impossible.
      You'd have to drasticaly increase muzzle velocity to do that, and modern tank guns are so highly advanced, that there isn't that much more room for improvement in this area.
      Guns using a chemical propellant are probably reaching a limit there.
      As to the muzzle velocity measured here: While I appreciate 00's diligence in this regard, I don't think you can take the velocity shown in-game at face vallue unless the game's engine is specificaly coded to accurately simulate shell trajectory.
      A tank game like Warthunder or World of Tanks does it, as the shell trajectory is improtant for the performance and playstile of individual tanks. But in a normal shooter? Probably not.
      edit: I off course meant to say "muzzle energy" up in the first line.

    I'd imagine in the lore if it was mentioned the muzzle velocity would sit somewhere in the 1800-3000 m/s+ range, and going with a 90mm allows for more rounds to be stored in the tank increasing its combat effectiveness. But if it is near 1100 m/s(but that was prolly done for gameplay). though it could be a specialized APFSDS round with a chemical penetrator as well. Something like the new round being developed for the M1A2's which is a multipurpose round that can change from HE(airburst ability), HEAT, and a SABOT dart all in one round. Which in Halo, the operator could switch between in milliseconds, and thus the round itself would adjust for velocities according to the type of effect being chosen depending on the environmental factors, barrel fatigue etc. I'd also imagine it could allow for indirect fire as well if needed. By gameplay standards though, a modern Abrams/Leo/T90, those guns would pack the punch if using DU rounds would rip apart a Wraiths armor as they all are around 1800 m/s mark. Loved the video, keep it up 00

    • @user-xb1wh5mt4l

      APFSDS round with a chemical penetrator? How? All the idea of an APFSDS round is that you have a very tough and very heavy round with a small cross-section.
      I understand a multipurpose round with HE and HEAT in one package, they've been around for a time actually, they're called High Explosive Dual Purpose.
      The idea of HEDP and APFSDS in one round is outright stupid. You can't put much explosives in a thin dart, while your HEAT component will ruin the frontal toughness of the projectile, ruining it as an APFGDS.

    Interestingly, gameplay wise the gun elevation/depression isn't relative to the vehicle axis but the world axis(?) which proves to be frustrating. This issue isn't only with the Scorpion but the Warthog, Wraith, Revenant etc. I hope that's fixed eventually.

    In the CE manual it said it had a crew of 3 or 1 cyborg... I always liked the design, 4 tracks could be a pain if they ever broke down but the articulation would help with better traversing of terrain than a standard 2 track design with torsion bar suspension.

      Four tracks seems good in theory, but really all it does its bog down the tank on uneven terrain and hills, unless the chassis is also articulated. Sweden attempted this with the UDES XX-20, but it had a myriad of issues.

    having 2 main guns on a tank is more problematic since according to rule 1: more moving parts = high likelihood of something going wrong
    firing 2 staggered shots at once means if one shot is only needed to take out a target then you've also just wasted another shot
    having a fast loading mechanism eliminates the need of having 2 main guns

      It was literally explained why it has 2 guns though.
      You CAN fire them seperately, and as quickly behind one another.
      2 Rounds are needed to deal with Covie vehicles, one to knock out the shield, one to destroy the vehicle.
      I'd like to see you find a autoloader that can load 120mm shells in atleast 1 second.

    I have no idea if this was intentional, but one detail I appreciate in RvB is that Sheila is consistently referred to as an "M808V Main Battle Tank." However, in canon Halo, there is no M808V. There's only the M808B, M808C, M808S, and M820. This just means that the M808V is a different variant that's designed to be operated by an AI. Why you would want to do that is beyond me, but I'm no expert.

    So,
    The M808 Scorpion is a 66 ton MBT, firing the M512 Smooth-bore High-Velocity cannon, using APHE rounds. (Armor Piercing High Explosive)
    Avery Johnson even says "This here is 66 tons of straight-up, HE-spewin', dee-vine intervention!"
    It wasnty till Halo 3 with the MBOBC that the vehicle was described using Tungsten munitions.
