would drop treason charges against presidential claimant Moshood
Abiola by saying it had no plans to intervene in his trial.
Military ruler General Sani Abacha also announced that he was
dissolving the leaderships of two striking oil workers' unions and
the trades union federation. His nationwide broadcast on Wednesday
(17/8) left Nigerians in no doubt that his administration was
ready to take tough action to try to end the country's worst
political crisis since a civil war in 1970.

For the young ones or those not hip, this was a common occurrence for us Nigerians from the 60s till the 90s. Mine started in the 80s with Buhari and Diagbon, then babanginda then this dude Abacha. I still get shivers thinking about that period. The whole country will go silent and you see military men making speeches always saying why they overthrew. We really lived like Germany during the nazi regime.

Thanks Abacha for bequeathing to our generation the 48 hours legacy. We now know that if there is a disturbance of public order that lasts more than 48 hours without resolution, then the government is directly involved. Abacha is a perfect example of the first of two components of power; strength and compassion. His compassion component is however non existent. We now have a government with both components missing. Insurgents and Kidnappers are filling the vacuum.

As a Nigerian from South East extraction, I'll have you know that, I don't know Abacha then, neither do I know Mustafa. But I've lived long enough as an adult in Nigeria to know when wools are being pulled over my eyes.
