Is a group of guys who gather together to play shenmue called a shencrew? If not let's make it a thing. First game is at my place GameRanx, and pizza's on me. Literally on my chest.
When this game came out my best friend died from cancer. He wanted to play this game but he died before it came out. I will buy this again just to honor him the best way gamer nerds can. I love you Dwayne...
when i was 13, it wasn't easy for my father and i to find common ground on which we could bond over. this particular game however, for whatever reason, kept my dads attention and it led to seemingly endless hours that we spent together as he watched me play in the evenings after he got home from work. he never wanted to play, just watch and talk about the story and whatnot. it was an experience i still reminisce over to this day. needless to say, the nostalgia is real and i will always love this game more than my father.
For people who haven't played Shenmue before, my before you buy advice would be that don't expect an action game. Yes there will be fighting, quicktime events and stuff like that more and more as the story progresses. But especially the beginning of the game is pretty slow paced exploration. You ask people for clues and at times there's moments when you actually have to wait until some bars open etc... That might frustrate some players who just want to progress with the story. But Shenmue is not just an open world adventure game, but it's also a real life simulator too in a way. Especially part 1. When a bar is closed you might want to go play some arcade games while you wait for it to open, or buy some food for your pet kitten. You can also practice your martial arts skills while you wait or expand your capsule toy collection or go to the fortune teller or do what ever you come up with. This makes the game feel like real life, but it's also something that might irritate some people. In Shenmue 2 you can skip all the waiting. They made some good improvements for Shenmue 2. All in all these are great games and you really want to see how the story progresses once you've been sucked into the game. But it starts slowly and that might turn some people off. Shenmue is a very unique experiece. First of all there's not many games that happen in the eighties, so that's interesting in itself. This is in many ways a relaxing game with a great atmosphere, fun characters, interesting story and unforgettable music. The city that you explore feels real because there's so much to do and because of the weather changes and because all npc characters have different answers to your questions and all the characters live their own life. They go to work and later they might go hang out at bars and stuff like that. This was a super ambitious game for it's time and even today many things about these games still impress me. So if you like atmospheric adventure games or if your curious to see what the first open world game was like, you should definitely check this out. Especially if you're interested in asian culture and martial arts, this is the perfect game for you.
I got a Xbox original on my birthday back in early 00s and this was one of the first games my parents bought. No regrets!!!!!! The arcade and then coming out the arcade to see the city scene at night was so amazing back then. Awesome game for its time shemue 2 though idk about 1
I didn't realize how grand and detailed Shenmue was until the next big open world game came out... which was GTA 3... now don't get me wrong I loved GTA 3, and despite being revolutionary for it's time, it felt empty.... in Shenmue you can open every drawer in your house! Shenmue's world just felt.... alive.... I know they're two different games and two different genres, but Shenmue really spoiled me because I expected every open world game going forward to be as detailed as it was.
You can open every drawer in the Hazuki residence if you wish but, with maybe 2 exceptions (one of them being the discovery of a crucial item) there is no reason to. It's all window dressing.
But it's window dressing that is appreciated for the sake of realism. It's the first thing most games would cut these days so they could add more bloom lighting and other BS Other things you can do in Shenmue that other games don't do: Talk to every single person on the street who *actually all have voices* Pick up/buy almost everything at the local supermarket Enter raffles at the local supermarket to win your own video games to play at home Collect cassette tapes of music that you can listen to on your walkman Get allowance from your grandma Actually *lose* quick time events and having that change the story (altho some you need to retry bc they're actually life threatening) Get a job and actually feel some tiny sense of community with the people you work with
And virtually none of those NPCs have anything of value to say. Almost all of the things you buy at the supermarket have no actual use. To listen to the tapes on the cassette player, you actually HAVE TO STOP PLAYING THE GAME. If I wanted to listen to music, I'd listen to music, and much better music than the fucking muzak that's on those tapes. Every QTE with a single exception is repeatable.
1. Because that's realistic. 2. Bc realistic 3. Could be fixed in newer releases. Phantom Pain did it. 4. No they aren't unless you completely reset the game. Although the first game had more of them, but that's bc 2's story was starting to pick up and become more serious
The only people who are obsessed with realism in video games are shut-ins who don't get to experience it any other way. Shenmue is an odd example to use as an example of realism in video games anyway, as it isn't realistic in the slightest. People don't talk like that. Teenagers can't beat up 70 gangsters by themselves. Old mirrors don't have mystical powers. Creatures like Chai, whatever the fuck he is, don't exist.
The second one is just as good, even arguably better than the first. The story really gets going when you get to Hong Kong, especially when you meet Ren of Heavens. You’re in for a treat.
I never played the second one either and i am really looking forward to it. I played part one for about 6 hours yesterday and im already on my second day of woking as a forklift driver. I was surprized that i remember exactly who to talk to and what to do after over 15 years of not playing it. Back then it took me months to get where i am now.
I loved it so much even though I never made it past the dock working part lol. I was blown away by the little deatails like collecting capsules, and feeding cats. Cant wait to finish it
Part of this reason is because they gave every single character in the world a schedule and trait list to them. I don't know if any other "open world" game has attempted this.
This is actually fairly common these days. Oblivion used a simpler form and even attempted giving NPCs personal goals, some shenanigans tended to follow. Several others like Breath of the Wild have characters respond to the environment and day / night cycles all the time. Stardew Valley is nearly as detailed as Shenmue in the daily routines of its NPCs even adding additional details depending on season and weather. Shenmue was groundbreaking for its time and should be acknowledged for it, but it has since been surpassed as the tech has improved.
To give you guys who never played this some perspective on why it was so mindblowing to us who played it back in the day. Consider this... it was released in the year 2000, the PS2 wasn't out yet, the most advanced games we got at the time were Majora's Mask or the first Metal Gear Solid. This... was mindblowing back then, the fact that the npcs had daily routines, the amount of detail everywhere was just something that wasn't even considered before. Nowadays its common fare, but Shenmue really was a key piece of videogame history, it did a LOT to push videogames foward and make world's more believable and im so glad i can finally play it again. If you never played it and feel you can get into it with the right mindset and pacience, give it a go!
I saved up for months to buy a Dreamcast to play Shenmue in High School after watching the opening cinematic on a demo disc. Shenmue will always have a special place in my heart.
Congrats for being one of the awesome people who bought a Dreamcast!🎉 I love the Dreamcast because it had so much personality and the games had a unique look to them that was never replicated on any other system and because it didn't reach mass market it was an exclusive experience for those who had the sense to buy it.
I've had every games console ever released, even a Neo Geo and a Jaguar. And now own the currant Playstation and Xbox. But hand on heart I can honestly say that I've never loved any console more than my Dreamcast. I adored everything about it, especially the funky memory cards. And to this day it still has my favourite catalogue of games like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5, Vituar Tennis, Shenmue 1 and 2 although 2 was only in Japanese. You had to have the Xbox version to play Shenmue 2 in English. Which I had as well. I love the Dreamcast forever!!
Take a look at the old version graphics, At that time, lara croft's head was still triangular, and shenmue was already half a movie. What a masterpiece 👌 And check out how this atmosphere sucks you completely in.
how in the hell were they able to create a game so far ahead of its time back in 1999... bizzare af.. its like the technology they used was so advanced than anything anyone else had
Dreamcast was a surprisingly powerful console. I once heard that Shenmue cost so much to develop, that every dreamcast owner would have to purchase 2 copies of the game in order for it to break even. I LOVED this game!
As someone who has no nostalgia for Shenmue and fell in love with it recently, I’d recommend it to people who enjoy slow, relaxing games and want to lose themselves in the world. Don’t listen to people; it’s nothing like Yakuza (apart from some mini games). It’s probably more suited to people who enjoy games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley or Persona. It’s honestly a life sim of sorts with an adventure story. If you go into it with that expectation, I’m sure you’d enjoy it more.
Best series ever made! When this came out there was nothing like it in terms of its scope, story telling, graphics and everything. Now in 2020 there is still no game like it. This is simply a beautiful world and really elevates video games to true art.
Just got the game first thing in the morning yesterday. I’ve always seen it around and how it was way ahead of its time. Now that I play it, it’s very true this game was way more ahead of it’s time. The voices kill me but the clues, prizes, random events and people you run into is worth playing through and getting to know this game.
Never played as I didn’t have a Dreamcast at the time, but always wanted to. Picked up my copy yesterday and starting playing last night. The dated gameplay takes some getting used after just finishing yakuza 6, but somehow I was still pulled in and exploring for close to 2 hours before calling it a night. Looking forward to knocking these out before 3 drops next year!
@@silentchef1874 It's a very different game with some similarities. The creator of the Yakuza series was part of the Shenmue team. Shenmue is a slow-paced adventure game, with relaxing gameplay and an incredibly detailed world where every NPC has a schedule and a back-story, even if you have no way of knowing it - for example one NPC you have no reason to ever speak to walks around every day in a suit with a suitcase, because he's been fired from his job and hasn't told his family yet. There are plenty of little mini-games a few QTEs, and a handful of Virtua Fighter III-style fight scenes, but it you expect Yakuza-style action, you are going in with entirely the wrong expectations. I was quite late to the party with Shenmue, as I only bought a Dreamcast about 4 years ago, but I was blown away then and devoured both games in a month, and I'm playing through them again now and they are still among the most impressive games I've ever played.
Best part about preordering this one was the fact that since it was a rerelease you already knew what you were getting if you played it back in the day
I feel so old lol. I played both games at initial release on my Dreamcast and Xbox respectively. Even then I knew they where special and have been agonizing for the third installment for nearly 20 freaking years! 2019 is going to be a phenomenal year for me!
If you really look, most current open world games have still not caught up with Shenmue. Though they have their place, most or all of them are very lifeless and just huge for huge sake. The Shenmue world is very dense. Dobuita still feels alive, every NPC has a different personality and purpose in the game world. At any point in the game, just about every NPC has multiple dialog lines appropriate to where you are in the game. Imagine how long that probably took. You can go into just about any building, and it feels very lived in and real. There ARE some dodgy things you have to endure like the pacing and V.O.but check it out if you get the chance. If not just run around dobuita and marvel at all the detail...and then compare it to other games from that generation or even modern open world games. It's oozing with personality, charm, and MYSTERY...which most games lack.
Yes! Thank you! Not many people realize this fact. A lot of these open world games are big open spaces, with poor game mechanics and lifeless experiences.
I played Shenmue last year for the first time ever, and i cant quite explain why, but i think its an absolutely beautiful game, It somehow reminds me of my childhood, old friends and just seems to bring me happiness and nostalgia playing it. (even though i never played the original) i cant explain why, just an amazing game
Good for u man you'll enjoy it. Do yourself a favour and turn the Japanese voices on. the game has bad voice acting even for back in 2000. The games last about 25-35 hours each so the english voice acting might get old quick.
This game is amazing. Definitely set ground rules for what we play today. Looking back and comparing to other games that came out at the same time, made me realize how incredible it was and still is. I never got to play Shenmue 2 so i'm really looking forward to that. I can't wait for 3 and I'm really wondering what clever things will Yu Suzuki come up with this time around.
It kind of reminds me of how yakuza 3, 4 and 5 are “remastered” for the PS4, the games aren’t totally remade like kiwami and kiwami 2, but it’s still very nice to see the older models slightly touched up to HD. Really considering getting this, Ive heard a lot of great things regarding this franchise!
I got the original Shenmue for Dreamcast on release day - Even seeing footage of it takes me back to how I felt, playing it for the first time. I never got to play II, so I can't wait to get these and go through them again! Even though the gameplay may feel "dated" compared to more modern games, I think there's still going to be a lot of appeal. Especially with episodic adventure games like "Life is Strange" being so popular, I'm sure there is a whole new audience of gamers that wasn't around then to enjoy the story and experience.
I remember playing Shenmue II when I was around 8 or something. The case actually came with the game itself and a "movie" of the first game that helped me get acquainted with Ryo's backstory. With this, I can actually experience the first game now along with the second!
My expectations of this game when I first played it was thinking I was going to be fighting people in Japan, as soon as the game started I was quickly immersed in the story and didn't really Care much on combat, what blew me away and separated it from. Other games was the Interactive gameplay totally blew me away
Man I fell in love with this game on the DC but never got to play the second one. So I grabbed this immediately and playing it again was like revisiting a familiar place I'd been before. One of the greatest games ever.
What does fam mean? I’m not hippity hop on my lingos. I also keep seeing people say that things are “lit”. It’s nice to see people that are impressed with decent lighting.
I've loved these games since the Dreamcast, and still love them today. If you have an ultrawide monitor, it doesnt support that mode, but other monitors work just fine. This was remade perfectly in my opinion, and such a treat to be able to play it on modern systems.
Still have the four disc Shenmue 2 sitting on my shelves. It was so hard for me as a kid to figure out why it wouldn't play on my dreamcast, when I got it from Japan. Haha
My very first memory, at age of 3 was playing shenmue on the dreamcast. It took me so long after my parents sold the console for me to figure out what game it was and now I can play it on pc! I can't describe how exciting this is.
@@yourmum997 He also said "it hasn't aged well" and "it's not as fun as it used to be." The only people I see advocating this as a worthwhile game today are those with nostalgia goggles.
These games touched my life in a way few other games have before or since. They are poetry in motion still to this day. I'm so happy Sega re-released these games.
Am I the only one who is highly impressed about the graphics ? I mean this absolutely blows off FF7 and FF8 in terms of graphics. It looks ahead of time
FF8 and Shenmue both were released back in 99....but yeah the dreamcast was superior in terms of graphics. And this game was like 5-6 years ahead of its time.
I replayed it the day it came out. Usually i am a rusher when it comes to games. I hardly ever do sidequests or other stuff thats not the main-story. But especially part one forced me to kill time because i had to wait a few hours ingame, or a day. I actually greatly appreciated that. It's still a really immersive experience. You can talk to every NPC in the game, which makes the world very rich. the only thing that, in my opinion, didnt age well are parts of the controls, especially the camera. The graphics are of its time, but i think to a degree they still hold up. If you don't like the graphics, there's already modders sharpening up stuff.
At least they're finally making it. I hope if this does well it makes Sega start contiuing their old franchises. We haven't gotten a jet set radio since 2002 and jsrf is one of my all time favorites.
@@RawCyberHub I played Shenmue I & 2 for the first time about 3-4 years ago when I finally bought a Dreamcast. My only experience of the games at the time was seeing screenshots in EGM having never seen anything that graphically impressive before. I was really nervous about playing them, since it was so polarizing, and I was worried that the first game that ever looked "next gen" to me would end up being a disappointment. It wasn't. I was blown away and utterly absorbed. I finished both games in a month, and they shot right into my personal top 10 games of all time list. You are never too late to enjoy a great game.
To me the Yakuza series is more a catharsis experience (Scorsese-like crazyness) where in the other hand, Shenmue is more an holistic, spiritual, animist and discover ourselves adventure...
Picked it up first day of release and started with Shenmue 2. My reflexes are slowing with age compared to my childhood self. Bloody ghost building planks were a killer
The fighting is better than a lot of modern games. And Shenmue was the first game to implement QTE’s it literally invented it. I do t think they lose anything in the modern age of gaming, imo it’s still a superior gaming experience.
I remember when my mom bought me a Dreamcast for Christmas, this game caused a great impact on me it felt like it was huge with no limits whatsoever, 17 years went by and I'm not a kid anymore however the nostalgia is too strong and I will be downloading this tonight. Greetings from Costa Rica
Is a group of guys who gather together to play shenmue called a shencrew? If not let's make it a thing. First game is at my place GameRanx and pals! Pizza's on me. Literally on my chest. It's still good though. Thumbs up for videogames bringing us all together.
rafresenden rafresenden. I mean graphically not so much. Although SNES still look good to this day. And people still play old games like ALTTP, SM64, MGS 1, SF 2, etc.
You know, it used to be terrible in summer, but as a PC person who got Yakuza 0, Monster Hunter World and Shenmue 1 & 2 I can't complain really this year. Especially Shenue... I remember years ago I saw the first game in a magazine and I wanted it so badly, but, alas... even then I was tied to a PC. When the third game appeared I was going to emulate the older games and as I was looking into that, the HD remaster was announced. Suffice to say, playing these games has been a dream for me for years and now I can without any problems on the platform of my choice. Truly, a summer to remember for me.
I've been waiting for these games to be released on new consoles because I have been wanting to play them forever so I'll definitely be picking this one up at some point.
As someone who didn't grow up with the Dreamcast or Shenmue, the remastered version was a very unique experience to me. I can't really put into words why I enjoyed the game just that I felt very engaged and immersed in it. My only issues are with some of the bugs. I've had audio cut out and my game even crashed on me once.
I loved shenmue 2, when you come to a new place as a stranger, but by the time you leave you have made many friends. And Shenmue 1, where you actually felt like being in 80s Japan. Awesome games, loved my Dreamcast.
I remember playing it on my buddies Dreamcast back in the day! Never beat it though since he owned it. Only played like an hour of it and fell in love. Seen it in the PS Store and didn’t hesitate! Reliving my incomplete childhood.
Shenmue was one of the first game I got with the Dreamcast console along with nba 2k and nfl 2k. This game is beautiful and it's one of my favorite games I played in the past.
Still mad at myself for letting those dudes hustle me in pool in the beggining of Shenmue. They got me when I was 8 playing on the DreamCast, and they got me as a 25 year old man playing on PS4 lol
That persistent world created in Shenmue with npcs going about their business still hasn't been beaten with all of today's processing power and memory. You could follow people and see them go to cafes, bars, sometimes back to their house. Businesses shutting up shop at the end of the day. I still have not seen a game pull this intricacy off today. Npc's in GTA for example just wonder aimlessly or walk endlessly to no where. I hope this sells well so it will encourage Sega someday to make a visual updated version like SOTC.
I've never played these games so I can't compare directly, but Elder Scroll Oblivion kinda did that exact thing in 2006 didn't it...? Either way, there are *very* few games that have those kind of details added in, I'll give ya that!
@@TheMistyBlueLounge Yes, you are right, because traditionally RPG games didn't really dwell on npc or they were just to converse with so Elderscrolls Oblivion didn't cross my mind. I remember a friend playing it so I read up on the details on the game world at the time of release. How you could affect other characters by your actions and how they treated you days after was really something. I expected more persistent game worlds today sadly not. I hate it in games where people or cars just vanish if you look away really ruins the illusion.
Yea I hear you, it's really not a part of game design that seems to have been worked on much, barring a few exceptions. I'm interested to see if Red Dead Redemption 2 does anything with it now, but I get the feeling it's gonna be more of the same, people that disappear when you stop looking, or literally spend their entire existence playing poker or selling guns behind the shop counter. RDR seems like the kinda game that could really benefit from those added details... and it seems like the game IS adding a LOT of details... but I still think it's gonna be lacking in this regard, which would be a little disappointing.
I loved the game back then so the remaster was a no brainer to me. Specifically loved the fighting system because it actually comes very close to real life karate with every attack having a fitting counter attack and being able to string them together to a fluid kata.
Hahahaha, I love the background characters- Ryo: "Have you ever heard of Lan Di?" Background Character (in inexplicably southern American voice): "Laaaannn Deeeee??? Ah ain't ever heard of no Laaaan deee there boy, no siree"
Took the day of work today and as we speak I am on the bus home with a ps4 and shenmue , I bought the ps4 just for this. Reminds me of when I was a teen , loving today. Greetings from Ireland
Shenmue 2 is the reason I practice tai chi. I was an angry teenager but shenmue taught me how to be calm in all situations. This game will always bring back the memories of conquering myself.
I played the first one and the 2nd one in 2002 on the dream cast, MAN this game was something else, nothing like it at the market, the story, the progression, the explore, the daily time day, no mini map to show where you are or a mark to tell you where to go, the time event, MAN this game was something else back then, I think the story is so strong will make you wanna play part 3 to finish it.
I appreciate these before you buy videos. Subscribed. I watched the one on far cry 5 as well. I am thinking of buying far cry 5 and shenmue HD collection is a must own to me. I like how the videos just explain the game with very little bias and just simply personal opinion and not the preachy review stuff that I'm used to. Great series it seems if you are thinking of buying a certain game but wanna know alot more about it first.
Maybe it's just me, but I can't believe there's no mention of training to skill up your fighting moves, or if you can still transfer your skills to the sequel. This was one of my favorite mechanics from the first game, and I can't believe it was completely overlooked in your review.
Shout-out to a game of Lucky Hit.
I’m wit ya too

How about some lucky hit?

I never played the second one either and i am really looking forward to it. I played part one for about 6 hours yesterday and im already on my second day of woking as a forklift driver. I was surprized that i remember exactly who to talk to and what to do after over 15 years of not playing it. Back then it took me months to get where i am now.
I loved it so much even though I never made it past the dock working part lol. I was blown away by the little deatails like collecting capsules, and feeding cats. Cant wait to finish it
@@MrCornWolf you should finish it...I 100% it back in the day..those raffle tickets were a bitch too
Tbh, Shenmue games are the most "alive" open world games I've ever played.
Yeah plus, most larger open world games are bland and lack detail.
Part of this reason is because they gave every single character in the world a schedule and trait list to them. I don't know if any other "open world" game has attempted this.
@@BigTea we have yet to get another game with an atmosphere like this its a shame.
I recommend to play LISA the painful rpg too
This is actually fairly common these days.
I love Majora's Mask.
Bought it day one lol. Nostalgia was too strong for me to question if I was gonna buy it
I'm with you. Playing it right now drinking some Sam Adams
YOU MY MAN!!! BRING SHENMUE 3!!!
Same lol

“HEY MISTER! LETS PLAY BASEBALL!!!!!”
“maybe later...”
"I see."
Take a look at the old version graphics,
At that time, lara croft's head was still triangular, and shenmue was already half a movie.
What a masterpiece 👌
And check out how this atmosphere sucks you completely in.
This game is finally getting the recognition it deserves!!
Waka Flocka Project yes!!
how in the hell were they able to create a game so far ahead of its time back in 1999... bizzare af.. its like the technology they used was so advanced than anything anyone else had
@WaVy Crockett #JizzBoss That's actually the cost of both games, plus the scrapped Saturn version and a scrapped ship level.
Insane amount of money that was unheard of for a game at the time.
I would describe it as LA Noire meets Stardew Valley (detective game + life sim).
Agreed, shenmue is far more in the vein of Dreamfall or Heavy Rain than yakuza. Its an advenure game.. Yakuza is its own thing
Abraham 123 i agree, it's nothing like yakuza.
Yakuza is fun to play, shenmue is not.
all these epicc/badass games are being ported to pc is amazing
what do you do t play it on PC? do you use steam?
Best series ever made! When this came out there was nothing like it in terms of its scope, story telling, graphics and everything. Now in 2020 there is still no game like it. This is simply a beautiful world and really elevates video games to true art.
Just got the game first thing in the morning yesterday. I’ve always seen it around and how it was way ahead of its time. Now that I play it, it’s very true this game was way more ahead of it’s time. The voices kill me but the clues, prizes, random events and people you run into is worth playing through and getting to know this game.
Glad to know people who haven't played it back then are also liking it
Ive waited for the conclusion for half of my life. Just glad to be alive.
No shit lol!! I bought a dreamcast 20 years ago just for this game and I still don't know how it ends.
Half Life 3 confirmed then.
Shenmue 3 wont conclude the story.
@@ericrhodes5174 I know. If 3 is a success then in the nxt installment we'll have our conclusion.
Its GABEN again!!! I knew his behind this as to why there isnt a Shenmue 3
Kevin Utley is it worth buying ? I love the yakuza games
Game could look like a potato and i'd still play it for 100x hours. Shenmue is life man. Only game I would pre-order this year.
Yeah! my Shenmue liking buddy
Best part about preordering this one was the fact that since it was a rerelease you already knew what you were getting if you played it back in the day
Absolutely! Hear Hear!!

This game totally changed my life as a kid. It was the ultimate relaxation. So many good memories from this escape!
I feel so old lol. I played both games at initial release on my Dreamcast and Xbox respectively. Even then I knew they where special and have been agonizing for the third installment for nearly 20 freaking years! 2019 is going to be a phenomenal year for me!
This game was WAY AHEAD OF IT TIME AND A VERY AMBITIOUS PROJECT for its time yet it was not entirely SUCCESSFUL at its time, glad they remastered it.

@jsh020 It's more likely that they just didn't get many in stock to begin with.
12AM upload! Just made my night good! Now, We all can have some pizza.
We need more HD remakes of great games.
Sega did the same for Jet Set Radio, if you're into that. It's on Steam.

Never played the series, but I’ll give it a try
Good for u man you'll enjoy it. Do yourself a favour and turn the Japanese voices on. the game has bad voice acting even for back in 2000. The games last about 25-35 hours each so the english voice acting might get old quick.
The english voice acting is not that bad its actually pretty funny i love it.
Neither did I until today. Enjoying so far.wanted to see what all the fuss was about lol
Be patient and be open, explore and take your time, then you will enjoy it for sure
Great games
As a fellow New Yorkean this is a really late time to upload but then again it's a really late time for me to be up watching CZcams videos....
I rate this game sailors/10
I got the original Shenmue for Dreamcast on release day - Even seeing footage of it takes me back to how I felt, playing it for the first time. I never got to play II, so I can't wait to get these and go through them again!
Even though the gameplay may feel "dated" compared to more modern games, I think there's still going to be a lot of appeal. Especially with episodic adventure games like "Life is Strange" being so popular, I'm sure there is a whole new audience of gamers that wasn't around then to enjoy the story and experience.
Shenmue teaches you to be kind, very very rare in ganes these days
I remember playing Shenmue II when I was around 8 or something. The case actually came with the game itself and a "movie" of the first game that helped me get acquainted with Ryo's backstory. With this, I can actually experience the first game now along with the second!
My expectations of this game when I first played it was thinking I was going to be fighting people in Japan, as soon as the game started I was quickly immersed in the story and didn't really Care much on combat, what blew me away and separated it from. Other games was the Interactive gameplay totally blew me away
I always loved slice of life games like Harvest Moon. I would probably love this game.
Can't wait to ask random people again if they've seen sailors around.
Man I fell in love with this game on the DC but never got to play the second one. So I grabbed this immediately and playing it again was like revisiting a familiar place I'd been before. One of the greatest games ever.
I loved collecting the little sega figurines from vending machines, it was easy losing money.
Relaxing play through, interesting story. Retro-action gameplay, genres don’t matter, different and far from perfect. Still a great remaster, fun.

These games touched my life in a way few other games have before or since. They are poetry in motion still to this day. I'm so happy Sega re-released these games.
Am I the only one who is highly impressed about the graphics ? I mean this absolutely blows off FF7 and FF8 in terms of graphics. It looks ahead of time
Let´s say you are. And you are probably joking, because FF 7, 8 were released way before Shenmue. On much weaker console.
FF8 and Shenmue both were released back in 99....but yeah the dreamcast was superior in terms of graphics. And this game was like 5-6 years ahead of its time.
FF8 was released one year before Shenmue, but you're right that it was on a much weaker console.
That’s because The Dreamcaster was ahead of its time.
I'm loving this game. The voice acting and quirks are what make it. World is very alive too
If shenmue had support from sega like resident evil from capcom. Life would be interesting.

My only experience of the games at the time was seeing screenshots in EGM having never seen anything that graphically impressive before. The fighting is better than a lot of modern games. And Shenmue was the first game to implement QTE’s it literally invented it. I do t think they lose anything in the modern age of gaming, imo it’s still a superior gaming experience.
They might have used QTE in the way it's known today, but there was QTE in games since the early 80s.

Enjoy! I haven't played the first one, because it wasn't available to me back when I decided to play the games, but I did enjoy Shenmue 2

Looooool
I loved the game back then so the remaster was a no brainer to me. Specifically loved the fighting system because it actually comes very close to real life karate with every attack having a fitting counter attack and being able to string them together to a fluid kata.
Hahahaha, I love the background characters- Ryo: "Have you ever heard of Lan Di?" Background Character (in inexplicably southern American voice): "Laaaannn Deeeee??? Ah ain't ever heard of no Laaaan deee there boy, no siree"
Nostalgia.....damn

Maybe it's just me, but I can't believe there's no mention of training to skill up your fighting moves, or if you can still transfer your skills to the sequel. This was one of my favorite mechanics from the first game, and I can't believe it was completely overlooked in your review.
