- The famous standard "Autumn Leaves" is given 3 different treatments, Jazz (swing), Latin (Bossa), and Ballad. A song written in 1945 by Joseph Kosma with lyrics by Jacues Prevert. This tutorial explains the use of jazz phrasing, syncopation, and swing 8th notes. Please check out my book and website here: www.kenthewitt.com/

I love the way you explain things after you play the song. It really nice of you to take the time and detail how you do it. Thanks
Thanks, Carol, I really appreciate your comment...keep watching!
You are such a versatile player. Thanks for sharing Kent. Your teaching abilities make this all seem so easy. It makes Jazz less of a black box. Thanks for shedding light on this style of music.
+David Faria I appreciate the positive feedback and detail. This keeps me going!
Thank you for this video. The beauty of music is the interpretation of the music by each musician. You did a great job demonstrating the different versions (jazz, Latin jazz & ballad).
Thanks...I appreciate the comment!
I am trying to remember that I need sleep . Ha ha .
You're videos are so compelling , it's easy to be a glutton and want to watch more . Educational over dose . Lol . But I'm loving it . All in good humour , I'm very grateful and hoping to grasp and master this beautiful instrument and style of playing one day . Xx
I keep watching this video, its just awesome!! Many thanks.

You are the best fan for telling me so...thank you!
GREAT tutorial!!! Thank you
Kent- you are formidable. What a great contrast in interpretations.
Thanks for the affimation...it took years tom understand that.!
It is amazing how this song make it absolutely world wide.
Look what happens here, young musicians.
Mr Hewitt applies the "formula" for jazz/Latin/ballad. There's a "formula" for every kind of music, and it's mainly the RHYTHM that changes.
The MELODY remains the same.
The HARMONY (The chords) might "Expand" a little, esp with jazz interpretations. But they'll still represent Dominants, Sub Dominants and Tonics.
But by changing the RHYTHM you can turn ANY song into a Jazz, Country, Shoe Gaze, Surf, Ragtime, Heavy Metal, or any other style. That's exactly what KH is doing here. He didn't learn three different songs. He played the same song, just applying the formula for the style he wanted. All you need is the formula. Analyze your favorite performer's recordings and you'll learn the formula. You'll begin to hear the same formula in other recordings in the same style/genre.
BTW - Practicing ANYthing over Autumn Leaves is a great idea as it cycles through all seven chords. It's even called in 4/4, 3/4, and 5/4 time. You could do a Shoe Gazer-Bossa version in 7/8 time and be a hit at the restaurant gig.
Thanks Mr Hewitt. Thanks young musicians.
Thanks for the lesson...I always learn from my students.
What i like about this is youre so experienced an you dont explain like its a mystery. ciao
I strive for simplicity and clarity in playing and teaching, so thanks so much for that great affirmation!
Swing loose!!
Can't get enough of your channel KH :)
Thanks for telling me!
Great lesson Kent, thank you so much for these.
+Bill Pappas Thanks, Bill, I really appreciate the comment!
Boy, you're GOOOD!!! You really know your stuff, and you're excellent at explaining, too! Thanks for the videos.
I appreciate that!
Amazing! I am a self-taught pianist who's primarily focused on Liszt, but watching your videos has inspired me to start learning more Jazz and variations, as they are truly beautiful.
Thank you so much! Please keep making videos =)
I will, and thanks for the comment and motivation!
Great tutorials, Kent!! After playing rock n roll, professionally, for 41 years, I'm getting back into my jazz studies (John Mehegan, Mark Levine). Stumbled upon your tutorial on "All the Things You Are" - and after seeing this, I'm hooked. Just so happened that "Autumn Leaves" was 2nd on my list. I think 3rd will be "Satin Doll". Anyway, studying my upper structure chords at present, but after seeing your videos, I'll have to make room for another hour of practicing!!! Thanks a million for sharing such valuable information....Brad
Thanks Brad , for telling me. I studied briefly with John Mehegan and have his books. A lot of knowledge comes from experience, private lessons, imitation, listening to records and live performances, and playing with musicians. Please check out my book... . because there's a lot of practical info and good tunes to play.
bravo great tutorial
Love your videos, many thanks.
Glad you like them!
Very good - EXCELLENT!!!!
Glad you like it!
Jazz version is awesome too ! Thanks a lot to share
I appreciate your comment!
This is so nice and amazing!
Thank you so much!
So nice. Both in terms of the music and the teaching. Thx a lot!
I appreciate the nice comment!
Kent, you probably know people love your playing and guidance, I cannot even start to express the ultimate joy filling me watching and listening to this and other videos of yours. Some watch entertainment, shows, movies, concerts, I watch your stuff and other talented musicians over the web and feel blissed. Sorry this is long but I'll tell you even more. Imagine a passenger who always wanted to drive a car but it seems so much to learn so he takes taxies all the time. You are the driver who gracefully tells the curious passenger about each and every decision and turn and sign on the road, making it so easy to understand and embrace driving as a practice and life habbit, losing all fears and excuses. You make my musical journey a very enjoyable trip, better than any technical book or excersize or theory. a Thousand thanks - wish you to play and teach many more years to come with a smile!
An interesting analogy , and very kind and generous words indeed, sir, and eloquently expressed....I would guess that you are a writer. Many thanks!
Wow never before did it feel so natural to give a thumbs up on youtube. I love your content, many thanks for your time and for sharing your knowledge. Have a wonderful day !
I appreciate the generous comment and support!
Amazing class !!! Thank you again. Greetings from Brazil
I appreciate the compliment!
Good I found this video, not even my Noah Baerman jazzbooks explains the rythems this well. I've found several explanations of syncopation as well. But playing the chord of the next bar a quarter note early is indeed the best.
I have a video that talks more about that idea... called The Art Of Jazz Phrasing. Check it out: czcams.com/video/_pDDb3r5MWY/video.html
I can't decide which is my favorite... so awesome...
Thanks for the comment and compliment!
Quite interesting to see it broken down like this and described in terms of the written notation.
+Rene1935 Thanks again for the comments...I'm glad the videos help.
Thank You Very Much for sharing!

Thanks for the tip! Yes... I read he was the poet who wrote the French lyrics. I guess I should credit him, even though this is not a French vocal rendition.

I think I mostly play the balled version.
It's that kind of tune that can be played and has been played so many ways.
very good video, Kent! Thanks. Hope you are doing well! Rene
+RRTheN00bPwner Thanks, Rene, I hope you're doing well too! Please check out my newest videos.
Love this video! Do you have any videos that break down what your playing and doing in the left hand while your soloing the way that you did in this autumn leaves tutorial? Thanks
TB
I have a couple of LH chord videos here: czcams.com/video/vuvDmOekoAo/video.html czcams.com/video/27Pmx0cRnpw/video.html

very informative ♬♬
That's why I'm here....thanks!
hey Ken , thanks for all the brilliant piano tuorials : I was doodling around with "Eleanor Rigby " and have heard a few jazz inprov' on that tune , can you give us a tutorial about the modes that are used on this old Beatle tune . Cheers Tim from Cornwall PS it seems to hover over Cmaj7 and Em
I like that song a lot...I earned it a few years ago , so your request is inspiring me to delve into it. Thanks!
Wow
Thanks!
Can you do just a tutorial on the chords and voicings of autum leaves and how its played please
+adonis rodriguez I will gladly put that on my list...don't hesitate to ask again , because I have a long list. Many thanks!
super
for me is good
Thanks so much!
loved the tutorial, fabulous playing, Kent what does up beat and down beat mean?
Every quarter note gets one beat. (1/4 of a whole - four to a measure)) 8th notes get 1/2 beat (eight to a measure). So two 8th notes equal one quarter note. If you divide a quarter note into two 8th notes, the first 8th note is the downbeat the second 8th note is the upbeat. For example: in the case of a quarter note on the 1st beat of the measure, the downbeat is when the note is played and the upbeat is exactly in the middle of the beat. Now 16th notes or 32nd notes, you can imagine, are more complicated! But it's all mathematically perfect (on paper).
Amazing!
PS Listening to the ballad interpretation, I can only wonder, would the tunes in La La Land, especially the Mia and Sebastian's Theme be considered ballad because the legato, the stride-like playing and the chord structures on that sounds similar to your Ballad interpretation piece here?
Ruthwik Rao i think so
Impressive but I can't span a G to a Bb
I use a jump technique playing the G with the 5th finger, holding the note with the pedal and "jumping", the thumb up to the Bb. It takes some practice, which after a while will be easy.
true. crazy.
Neither .. You are the best mentor. i love you.
Thank you for the kind words!
My name is Kim Do Han. I am 29 years old and I have a request from my teacher and I am going to ask her e - mail address. I want to learn jazz piano, I'm practicing with my friends, and I want to see my performance video.
years ago I played this song with a walking base...I really like your style. I played in c I ran across the other day just looked up at. autumn leaves waling base. can you do a breakdown of this style
Hi, thanks for writing! I did somewhat of a breakdown. If you check out my list of videos in categories I'm sure it will translate into breakdown concepts and techniques you are looking for. Please write to me again. czcams.com/channels/dmjw5sm9Kn83TB_rA_QBCw.htmlplaylists
Awesome video! Do you have the sheet music for the ballad version? Would love to try to play it myself. Thank you and keep up the great work! Always a pleasure watching your videos...
Greetings from Germany -Jules
Thanks for the comment...sorry I don't have a score for this one...I have one in my book and I have 100+ free scores on my website.
nice piano..👍 by madame blues.😘
Thanks for the comment and thumbs up!
This is amazing! How do I develop hand independence?
That's a huge question, and not easy to answer w/o some extended lesson. It comes automatically at some point when you have practiced enough ...especially playing one hand at a time and then together very slowly. To be good at it you have to feel it, it's not intellectual or just a matter of counting. Watch my playlist videos on TIME AND RHYTHM and practice w/ a metronome.
@@KentHewittpiano88 thanks Kent 😌
Hello, hace you te partiture?
You should really watch David Bruce composers video on swing. I think you will like it.
Thanks for the tip!
@@KentHewittpiano88 it's just super cool because your explanation considering the you're actually a jazz musician coincides with David's video on a technical side so it's really nice to see that.
What should i learn in order to find the right jazzy chords for a song like that? i am playing the piano from ear for years now but i can only find "standard" chords that will go along with the notes, but finding jazzy chords are a whole different story for me and i have trouble finding the correct chords for a song to sound jazzy...oh and BTW i do not know how to read notes, is it something that i must learn in order to play jazz?
You don't have to read notes if you can see and feel the shape of chords on the keyboard and have the sound of them in your ears. Please write to me again at kenthewitt@hotmail.com and I will try to answer all questions!
is there anyway i could get the sheet music of this version, do you have it available on your website?
Thanks for the comment! That particular one I don't have a lead sheet. But it is available in most fake books. I have about 53 free scores on my website, however.
How can i go about soloing over this- what scales can I use? None of the scales I try sound right, there is always something thet sounds off
That question would take quite a few paragraphs to answer adequately. If you study my videos on scales you will learn more about that. The major modes will work fine on the minor and major chords and altered dominant scales will work nicely on the 7th chords. You can learn about this from my book here: kenthewitt.com/id31.html That may help, also a private teacher. This is a complex question. Thanks for watching!
Like ^^.
I also like your style. Thanks for your work.
question on the hard copy of your book? does it include volume 1 and 2 plus the apendex,
Please write to me at kenthewitt@hotmail.com and I'll send you all the information...thanks!
Are intros always necessary for a jazz solo like this?
Intros are a good idea...and I have a few videos that talk about that. I try to create intros for my standards. This one is a challenge, so that might be a good topic for the future. Thanks!
Appreciated!
please, could you just put there the chords?
Hey kENTyou just uploaded a video i could not get a new one
I had to fix something. Try this: www.kenthewitt.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/minorscales.pdf
