    There are plenty of scenes that I understand why they cut, but this was one that I truly with they did keep. It leads up so perfectly to her decision to jump. She’s come to the realization that she will never be happy and always be trapped, visualized by her unable to even undress herself without help. It also explains why she was missing her jewelry and had her hair down for the next scene when she’s running on the deck.

      I think she was suffering from depression as well, just living as an empty shell day to day. Cal was so abusive and controlling. How could anyone not feel the pain Rose was going through?

    • @calonlan5957
      @calonlan5957 Před 2 lety +75

      I completely agree. But I also wonder if at least ONE of the reasons why they removed this one was because Rose destroyed the room. Remember, she told Cal that she simply slipped while bowing over the rail to see the propellers; he didn’t know she had a breakdown. There was also no evidence of a breakdown. If they had returned to their suite, how could it be explained that the room was in complete disarray? I think one reason why it was deleted (as amazing as it is) is because Rose left behind physical evidence indicating that she was deeply suffering, and maybe that messy room couldn’t be worked back into the storyline very well.

    I think what triggered this panic attack was her mother constantly talking and boasting about her arranged marriage with Cal and although she's the engaged one, she has no say on the marriage because it's controlled by her mother. Her mother only cares about prestige, her reputation. Rose was tired of it, she's tired of the conversation with her mother's friends, and she wanted to get out of it. She thought that killing herself was the only way for her to stop this marriage. She was hopeless and depressed inside.

    Having been stuck in a corset a time or two, I totally get this. Like 1,000,000%. I know the scene is meant to show her desperation at being shoved into a life/relationship she didn't get to choose and doesn't want, and that's definitely not my experience, but, man. The metaphor of being squished into a garment that hurts and desperately wanting someone to help you out of it as a way of showing freaked out sudden claustrophobia at the life that's been foisted upon you? It's spot on and very relatable. Trudy, get in here! Rose needs you, dagnabit!

      Corsets aren't bad, especially 1910s corsets as they aren't there to make a small waist but a streamlined figure as was fashion at that time. I wear corsets on a daily basis and it's perfectly manageble to get in and out of it yourself. I think the problem with Rose here is not the corset but that she realises that she can't do much herself, not even dress herself. Fine dinner gowns weren't really possible to open up yourself as you see here. Possible, not not easy. Here she realises that she always needs someone and that she is pressed into a role she doesn't want and the absence of Trudy reminds her that if there isn't someone to help her she isn't able to do what she likes. It's not about the corset but her part in society itself. You can perfectly dress on your own in this times but as Rose is of high status it wouldn't be "proper" to dress herself or even make decisions herself and that's what gets her here. As she said herself in the beginning. No-one heard her screaming.

      Precisely. This scene was cut because, if anything, it overexplains things. It's too obvious. Old Rose's line "I'd seen my whole life like I already lived it..." etc. and ending with "Nobody who cared, or even noticed..." cutting right to Rose running says everything you need to say. Dramatically, it's much better pacing than including this scene, which is good but almost too melodramatic.@@tvl9193

When I was watching movie I didn't get why she was running and wanted to end her life, and the contrast between her superficial luxury life and then meeting Jack looking at the starts and saving her life is so meaningful.

  • @willsnally
    @willsnally Před 4 lety +75

    This scene alone is enough to conjure up so many questions in my mind about why some parents raise their children to become, in essence, versions of themselves rather than individuals with a separate identity and sense of self, and a unique path to follow, especially if that kind of pressure is becoming so bad to the point a young person attempts to kill themselves as their only means of escape from it all. Moreover, why the societal pressure to fulfil certain expectations seems to almost fall predominantly on women is another thing in question; you don't see men being pressured to get married and have children for example, as if it's somehow more acceptable for them to lead their own life and live it how they will. Women on the other hand, at least not as much today as they once did, had very little say in how they could live their lives, were even expected to refrain from voicing any personal opinions on a number of matters and were practically forbidden from doing anything that men had the freedom to do. I can understand Rose's frustration here; feeling trapped in a corset and unable to free herself without assistance symbolises the feeling of being trapped in a world overwhelmingly bound by restrictions, expectations and obligations to fulfil and just wanting to have the freedom to breathe and be herself without worrying about compromising her relationships with others.

    This scene just showed how being treated and told to act like a delicate flower on the rich side didn't really mean anything. This was a time where women were told by their families, "You're going to marry, no matter if you like it." and when they did get married, men and society would tell them what to do, what to say, where they can and can't go. A lot of women, just went along with it, some enjoyed it, and many like Rose...............They just needed a ship disaster to break their chains.

  • @Bloombaby99

    This scene expresses so much. To be a woman during those times was stifling, constricted, hot, and oppressive much like the clothes Rose is wearing. Her clothes and her trying to remove them without help (or having help) showcases the allegory of her trying to escape the oppressive, wealthy Edwardian system and lifestyle to which she was born. They don't make movies like this anymore.

  • @hiiaminpain729

    I actually (kind of) feel Rose in this scene.
    Imagine yourself, living in a family in the 1910's that wants you to be well brought up, and you can't do anything about it. Scream all you want, but no one will wake up. Your parents want you to marry someone you don't love, you can't have true entertainment in your life, and your fiance doesn't want you to go anywhere YOU want to go,or be with people you want to be with, you basically can't do anything you love to do. You're being forced against your own will.
    And wearing dresses and hats and gloves and jewelry, you'll feel like you can't breathe, wether mentally or emotionally, or even physically, you want to wear the things you want to wear but you just CAN'T.
    You watch your life as if you've already lived it, you know every scene, every move, every oufit, every line, every room, every place. like in a movie.
    Doesn't that make you want to die?
    Because you just CAN'T live your life the way you want to. Your words of complaint and explanation in why you want to do this and that don't matter to anyone.
    All everyone does in that time and place, only think of tea parties and businesses and dresses and weddings and fashion and engagements and jewelry and whatnot.
    Everything Rose sees in the room she's in, is all fake and a NIGHTMARE.
    She wants to end it ALL.
    Thus her running off to the back of the ship to jump off into the ice cold water called the ocean, and then When she thinks that the nightmare will end as soon as she jumps off...
    She meets the man who will make her live a dream.
    Edit: And Holy Mokke, this is a really long comment. I think this might be the longest! Ono.

    This scene is so powerful why would they ever get rid of it. It really shows the feeling of her being trapped. And trapped by the expectations of her mother and what her family wants her to be. And the dress she wears when the titanic sinks when she’s with jack shows a new kind of freedom that no other costume has given her the entire movie. And that’s why I love the costumes in this movie. The costumes tell a whole story by themselves.

    Titanic is a unique blockbuster because like Gone with the Wind, it is a woman’s story. These epic movies usually focus on men with women being merely decorative, but going against that tired formula is what made this particular film such a phenomenal experience. It really took us into a woman’s psyche but on a massive canvas.

  • @imagaybanana2004
    @imagaybanana2004 Před 2 lety +7

    I understand that if the scene was kept, it would’ve created a small pothole in the movie. That pothole being, the fact that Rose’s room is an absolute disaster after her panic attack. She claims that she was simply trying to see the propellers and slipped, but if Cal or anyone else for that matter had seen her suite after the whole ordeal... well, you can finish the puzzle.
    It is an absolute shame though that they had to cut it. The way the scene was choreographed and filmed, paired with Kate Winslet’s impeccable acting, flawlessly portrays exactly what it feels like and looks like to have a mental breakdown or an extremely severe panic attack. I’ve had panic attacks very similar to this, and the feeling of claustrophobia... it’s almost like you’re drowning. This scene chills me to my core... The way she frantically, almost hysterically rips her hair down, and then just completely loses her mind. It just breaks my heart. I felt like they could’ve given it a rewrite or something, tweaked it to make it fit better within the plot.

    You know if she wanted to die should have waited three more days but Jack saved her and in return she saved Jack and they were meant to be together and I loved how Rose kept her promise to Jack even in the end she died an old lady warm in her bed and she went back to Titanic where Jack was waiting for her. It was a beautiful love story and I would take Jack and Rose over Fifty Shades Of Grey anyday and another good story was A Winter's Tale Romeo And Juliet and Tristan & Isolde.
