    Sims 2 had an online store. and while sims 3 has way too much monetization, the core gameplay is actually deep and meaningful and you can actually play the base game alone and have a good time. Sims 4 is hollow corporate art.

      What’s funny is that sims 4 players complain about the sims 3 being laggy and the fact that people have to use mods just to make it run smoother but, sims 4 is being held up and carried by mods and CC due to the lack of interesting gameplay. Modders must feel like Atlas.

    tbh sims 4 was doomed when simcity flopped. olympus was hastily converted into a single player game, maxis practically lost all autonomy on the franchise, EA took control of the game and started nickel and dime-ing everything that was in the previous base games. at this point TS5 is gonna be only kits, where you have to pay $5 for a single game mechanic. want to get sick? buy the new, "Get to Sick" kit! want toddlers? buy the new, "Get to Preschool"! want woohoo back??? buy the new, "Get Fucked" kit for $5 wowww!!!!!!

    Meet completion bias, the tendency of people to feel compelled to complete a task once they have started it. If you’re a Sims fan who starts with the base game and then one or two more packs, psychologically it’s incredibly compelling to continue buying more because otherwise it is incomplete somehow. It’s an incredibly powerful behavioural driver and it’s deceptive of EA to use it.
    Oh and another - Sunk Cost Fallacy. People are reluctant to abandon or give up on something when they’ve already invested so much, that’s why we’re going into year 7 of the Sims 4. EA knows how much a lot of people have invested in it, and they’ll continue to do so when there is the opportunity in the hope that something will be good and the whole investment will be worth it. Sims 5 would represent a break and a new investment, and they are probably scared they wouldn’t sell as much due to sunk cost fallacy, so more keeps coming for the sims 4.
    It’s extremely deceptive to use psychological drivers like these for the sole purpose of making money, especially when you’re not even delivering value anymore. In the short term, it means money for them despite a burnt out fan base. In the long term, they’ve damaged the brand beyond repair in my view.

    • @lunacouer
      @lunacouer Před 2 lety +22

      All of this.
      What's so sad is that they'd do just as well in sales if they made a great, well-thought-out, detailed game. You'd want to buy more because there really is more and it's so fun to play.
      Problem is, they'd have to pay more for the developers and animators to do that. That means less profits and less stock incentive. So, they've pared down the teams to nothing and pay them crap. They have to split it all up, sell it all piece meal, give us less while asking us to pay more.
      But since that tends to piss people off when it's direct and in your face, they do things like red dot all the packs you _haven't_ bought and string you along, thinking "Next time it'll be better. It has to be after I've bought all this."

    The problem is, we went from an era where developers had an INTEREST in making cool games people WANTED to play and make some profit from it to corporations deciding what people would play that could make them the most money. As usual, it took the soul out of game design.
    Also, as a lifelong sims player, I still contend that EA purposefully sabotaged Sims 3 to make it not work well in order to sell Sims 4.

  • @Sissy.222

    7:59 "its still going strong, but not because its a good game, but because sims players have an addiction to buying DLC.... sims players think its acceptable to buy crap like Journey to Batuu all because it comes with a couple of floor tiles" THIS!! I genuinely think a lot of players buy so much DLC (at full price too) because of the games social media content creators. Honestly, there is so much forced positivity in the sims community, where creators like Lilsimsie, even Deligracy to an extent hype up every pack or kit as its the greatest thing to ever exist. Lilsimsie even said in one of her reviews for "my wedding stories" to buy the pack just for world alone. If the pack doesn't work, and is basically a rip-off, criticize it and find the small amount of positives without suggesting people to buy the pack. At this point we need more criticism of EA and more hype surrounding CC creators. Maybe if we stop pretending everything EA puts out is a masterpiece, we could actually get better content. Stop buying DLC, at least stop at full price, and start supporting more CC creators and modders.

    • @estelladee
      @estelladee Před 2 lety +37

      I completely agree, part of the reason why people are buying these DLCs is because game changers hype them so much. They don't even show the bugs and glitches when they have early access. They barely test the game, when supposedly one of the reason why these game changers have early access is so they can test the game, literally THE ONLY game changer who does this is Carl, and he has no problems calling out Maxis of their laziness too. Too many people are saying, they don't blame the devs, but the thing is, the gameplay being so boring is a reflection of how the gurus just don't care anymore. Anyways, most game changers really have zero idea what it is like to play a game with actual gameplay, most of them are excited because a new recipe is added in the game, and they consider that as gameplay. lol. Really makes me laugh when they get so excited when that happens. How is a new recipe a new gameplay feature? You're still leveling up the cooking skill. That's it.

    • @lunacouer
      @lunacouer Před 2 lety +40

      Um...no. Lilsimsie recommended *against* buying My Wedding Disasters. She went over all the things she did like, and then showed just how busted it is.
      She said, and I quote: "If I were not a CZcamsr, I would probably buy this pack just for the world. I don't mean that you should, but I would probably come to that conclusion myself."
      and
      "Like I mentioned earlier, I've been having a lot of fun playing The Sims recently, but I have *not* had fun with the pack, and I think that kinda answers the question, is the pack worth buying? I don't think so." That was said after she went through all the ways it actually ruined weddings. World is great, great inclusion, mostly good CAS and mostly good BB, but it's not worth it if the gameplay is completely broken.
      Yes, Lilsimsie gets very excited over the littlest things, like a new window or new plant. We all know that about her, and yeah, it can be a bit much. Just saying, there's no need to lie about what she said on this particular pack.
      *Quotes taken from her video "Brutally Honest Review of The Sims 4: My Wedding Stories", 4:57 and 16:37. And yes, I went and rewatched the video because I thought I was going crazy and somehow misheard her entire review.

    • @estelladee
      @estelladee Před 2 lety +24

      @@lunacouer I believe she remade that review when Maxis somewhat made a fix for that gamepack. I say somewhat because I honestly, don't believe they fixed that DLC. But my problem with gamechangers/youtubers/streamers like Lilsimsie or Deli or MsGryphi or SimLicy or Pixelade-- honestly all of them except for Carl and maybe Plumbella, they don't know what they are talking about. Their main concern is to release content as soon as possible. They want to dish out new content as soon as they can for clickbait reasons. I get it, it's their job, but how are they different from EA? Look, I get it, this is their job and getting views is important, but at least have substance over your videos. I like how Carl (and Plumbella) will express on their early access videos that they cannot give their honest review until the official DLC launches, because you really cannot review a game on it's alpha/beta state, you are suppose to test the game on it's limits. Check for bugs and glitches. If it's a DLC check how it's gameplay feature affects the base game (and other expansion packs) gameplay features. I know because I play other games that has public access to early game access for their new DLC, and we test the game until it breaks as much as possible.
      Most of TS4 game changers don't even know how to test the game, the first thing they do is build. looooooooooooool. That is why most of their reviews are also "ohhhhh that's cute" and "it's so pretty". And I am not only talking about MWS, that gamepack is a no brainer, you could see the bugs and glitches a mile away, you really didn't have to test it, it was really broken. But more than that, most of them don't even recognize that MWS, doesn't give new gameplay features and that they don't add anything to the game in general. They just stated the obvious-- a buggy gamepack. The truth is, even if MWS run perfectly during launch, it really didn't enriched the wedding experience, it would have still been a boring and tedious gamepack. They should have added an attraction system, they should have added gameplay that enriched the dating and courting experience... again, it's more than just MWS, in past pack reviews, most of these "game changers" really have very shallow reviews and perspective of what gameplay should be like-- like I said most of they are excited because a new recipe is added to the game (hahaha. seriously that is so stupid). I like how when LGR was reviewing new content for the Sims he would always say at the end, "is this worth your money..." and he would explain why it is not. Because really most of these DLCs they are done very lazily. I really wish we get more content creators for TS4 who have more substance. I WILL listen to what they have to say, even if it's positive, as long as it is substantiated, not because "Ohhhhh that's cute" and "it's so pretty".

    I can’t believe just how little content there is in each Sims 4 expansion pack (especially when you compare it to previous Sims games.) It’s also baffling how much EA have been able to convince their fans that this is normal, I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve heard sims fans or CZcamsrs say “oh but it would take them ages to add that into the game because of creating all the different animations etc. etc.” Like… yeah, it would. And it should. So so many other video games have waaaaaay more content than the Sims because the studios behind them are actually interested in making really enjoyable, immersive experiences for the people who play them. I’ve been playing the Witcher 3 recently and the amount of content not just in the game, but in the expansion pack (which could have honestly been released as a separate game it’s so huge) is baffling when compared to The Sims. It’s just really upsetting that EA have managed to convince so many people that the amount of content they put in their expansion packs - a lot of which should have honestly been in the base game to begin with - is in any way acceptable. People be like “oh that would take too long to add” like… yeah… that’s how long games take to make. Because it’s such a chill game and so widely accessible a lot of Sims players don’t play other video games, and they really capitalise on that.

The other packs are honestly there for people who are into stardom, supernatural (werewolves, mermaids, vamps, etc), and just extra fun stuff. I applied to be a localizations expert for EA once and i'll never forget how they wasted ten hours of my life doing the application process on a broken-ass website, yes. You heard me. That's the amount of time it took for me to finish, because the interface was that fucked and you had to write several translations, and several essays into the website. All of this was just for a summer job, it wasn't even a permanent position. The interviewer I talked to seemed to hate his job, he seemed bored as hell and not very polite. At the end of our talk he said "We'll contact you to say whether you got the job or not", guess whether that happened....
    It's high on my list of worst job-search experiences. I feel pity for the devs working on these games, because I imagine this might be the atmosphere of the company. It feels like the game designers are listening to fans and trying to improve things for us gradually, hence all the free game updates to fix stuff... But they're being bullied by higher ups who are only interested in churning an unsustainable profit instead of keeping the fanbase that Maxis worked so hard to build.
    I love The Sims, I don't want the series to die, in fact I really enjoy a lot of things in TS4. When I play older games I miss many of the features in the newest installment. However, I definitely never buy any of the packs at full price. I only ever spend money on them when they are on sale, and I usually buy them in bundles... Precisely because of how audaciously overpriced they are.

    THANK YOU so much for actually mentioning games other than the Sims and EA's habit of buying up already successful franchises, running them to the ground and then shutting the smaller companies who made them originally down because they're not valuable to them anymore. It is a huge pet peeve of mine when creators are talking about EA and the Sims, acting surprised that they're ruining the series when me and so many others have already seen this done before to other favourite series of ours and know this is just what the executives at the company does!
    Honestly, the game industry leadership in itself is a whole mess!

      I'm not a builder, but we lacked Goth and Gothic styled anything. That's the only reason why I bought the worthless Vamp pack. But then ALL of those items were resold with the Magic pack. I could have just skipped the Vamp pack entirely if I knew I was just going to get the SAME OBJECTS later on. I've at least used Witches a few times compared to the Vampires which I have only ever played during that first week of owning them, so the Magic pack is still more useful to me than the Vampires.

    I don't think people buy sims packs because they are "addicted" but more because those pack are necessity for more comfortable and creative gameplay. I bought almost all packs because I either enjoy cas, b&b items or some specific feature of the pack. And yes, I know CC and mods exist but not everyone has strong computers to have all the cc and mods or they play on console.
    All in all, EA successfully implemented the idea of scarcity into the Sims 4 where you literally have no gameplay and need to constantly pay money to play the game that is also notoriously buggy. It's just sad that EA dosend give a single f* about the sims but Maxis and Gurus are the ones who recieve all the blows.
    I would strongly recommend to buy packs only when it's a sale and only in the bundle because they are not worthy of the full price.

    @Optimusj1975 Před 2 lety +1

    Nah... Bough NO PACK, NO KIT because it was at first 4 times the fair price, then EA thought it was a sound plan to raise the price 25% MORE instead if cutting 75%. I'm having enough fun with mods.

    I personally hold EA and Maxis equally at fault because I'm pretty sure some decisions were made soley within Maxis on The Sims Team. They're managed by EA but not to the point they, a company that releases shooting games, would really raise a big stink about a doghouse, or want to have multiple eco friendly related packs, or saying laundry shouldn't be included unless players vote on it for a few examples.
    I'm glad there's more life simulators coming about but especially Paralives, and possibly what Paradox is working on because I do want more innovation in the genre and it seems that EA and Maxis have gotten too comfortable being the only ones.

    As a hs freshman, I was never old enough to experience anything before TS4. I’ve had TS1 and TS2 for a while now but I could never get TS1 to run and TS2 was just… boring, and CC was limited. Now, I just started playing TS3 and instantly fell in love. I’ve spent upwards of $150 on TS4 and haven’t enjoyed much of it. With TS3 I only have 3 expansions (super cheap too) and I seriously can’t put the game down. TS4 wants what TS3 has, and it failed miserably. To those who have never played TS3, give it a shot! Even if you think the sims are ugly, the gameplay and CC makes up for it 😫🫶

      As an elderly millennial of 29, I've experienced all the games when they came out (except TS1, which I discovered a few years after its release). I absolutely agree that TS3 is the best one when it comes to gameplay depth and customizability.
      TS1 is a classic, although I'm not sure if it holds up well today (except for nostalgia reasons). TS2 was a huge leap in making Sims a full-fledged life-simulator, and I really enjoyed it except the TS2-style aging bugged me sooo much. Couldn't even move out my sims children without them growing older than their parents!. I even played The Urbs, which was quirky but very limited (also, it should've been called Black Eyed Peas: The Game).

      Agreed though i technically started with sims 2 when sims 3 came out i was completely obsessed i have all but one expansion (ambitions since i bought everthing hardcopy and they just didn’t have that pack anywhere) and most of the stuff packs apart from like 3 of them and it’s just so much fun..

      TS3 is my favorite of the series. I wish it had more of the charm, humor, and life details of TS2, but I loved how active and customizable the world and sims were. I would follow random sims around town, catch sims I created as future partners for my active sims running around with the ugliest sims in town. TS4 has the best looking sims unmodded, though, hands down. Only thing I'd take from TS4 to make an ultimate sims game is CAS, the easy build mode, and multitasking. I played TS1 but it I think it may have been the hardest in juggling all of the life tasks. I honestly struggled with TS2 when I tried to play it again last year. Specifically dealing with meals, hunger, and dishes. Each game got easier in terms of task management, so that's an adjustment. TS3 had a nice balance in that regard.

    I'm so excited for Paralives. It's like the beacon of hope. I love Sims, I've loved it since I was 12, I've been playing it for 14 years now. But it's time to accept that the Sims series is dying, people. EA will keep the corpse around for a long time, make it seem pretty, make it dance like a puppet, but it's slowly decaying and we all can smell it.

    Like seriously EA has ruined a lot of stuff I can’t even play sims 4 without having to update and then go all deep in my mods because they can’t figure out how to just update the game. I get it. Some mods. But when it still happens with updated mods and all that. No. I’m getting frustrated with this.

    I had got the Sims 4 for $80 when it first came out. It was pretty disappointing to say the least. Now I see where they’re trying to sell the base game for just $5. The base game alone has many things missing. The fact that game players are making mods to try to solve issues that the game makers themselves SHOULD fix is upsetting. They want to make more and more stuff packs and DLC and sell them out before considering to fix the problems that arise from previous packs. If there’s a Sims 5 to come out I’m truly not sure if I’ll end up getting it. It was disappointing enough what they did with the Sims 4, especially when it first came out. I’m not willing to go through that again.

    I'd say, the pay to win mentality is about youtube and twitch now. If they want to share their gameplay, they are expected to have all the content or fail to build an audience. On younger players with their pocket money watching twitch, seeing that all the time normalise the idea that you need everything to have fun. When in reality, the less content, the less bugs you face.

    I've been with the Sims since the beginning. As of the Dream Home Decorator pack I am no longer buying. If I want new things there are a load of excellent modders offering their mods for free. I have watched Sims decline and am holding out for something new just as I jumped from SimCity to City Skylines, I doubt the Sims will be in my life much longer.

    Honestly the Sims 4 died in 2019. After 2019, the Sims 4 was no longer able to run on my laptop like how it used to which was just fine. Nowadays my game takes an hour to load, and it's laggy as hell to the point where it's unplayable. The game was designed to be played on any lower end laptop and run fine. When I am able to play with little lags and freezes here and there, I get bored.

    I basically bought the early stuff and most of the packs that are need to have. I stopped buying after I became a bill paying adult and realised that they were charging basically the price of a full game for increasingly lack luster DLC. That don't even integrate well together, might I add. Haven't even touched the new kits at all.
