    It's frustrating that the sims community is so ignorant as to defend a multi billion dollar company just because it released a crappy pack. When Cyberpunk 2077 was released, the game was removed from the PlayStation Store and even CD Project Red fans could offer an objective view of the game. But simmers are not like that, horse ranch is a 40 dollar pack and they don't even give anyone the right to criticize just because the horses are coming. However, you can buy RDR2 for that price. A game set entirely in western theme.

      Of course CD Project Red had a reputation of "it'll be released when it's ready" and they didn't, our expectations were very high, and rightfully so, and they knew it. It's beyond me why so many out there are so quick to defend mediocrity, and worse. Been seeing a whole lot of "I'd rather play it now" people rather than "I'd rather wait until it's ready" folk. It really took me by surprise when people reacted that way to City Skylines II, where people are now realizing that optimization is only one small problem with that game. Wondering why so many gamers see little issue with rewarding companies for tossing subpar products at us rather than holding their noses in it and helping to make sure that we can all get our monies worth??

  • @AntaresSelket
    @AntaresSelket Před 6 měsíci +452

    Be a Karen! I'll join you. The small lots are ridiculous, especially with the pool parties. I've had nothing but trouble with the bugs and the thrill of a new pack is totally gone. I'm even having problems building because I'm struggling to be inspired with the tiny lots. It feels like the high school world that was such a let down, because the lots were so tiny and the loading screens are so long. I already decided that I'm not moving forward to the Sims 5 if it's in this condition, and I'm ready to give up on the Sims 4 and move on to other games that deserve my money.

    I think EA really knows what they're doing marketing wise. They do make it feel like you're missing out when not having every pack, which is totally playing into our current FOMO culture. And shortly before every new release, they give the "positive" Simtubers early access to hype it up. I've been actively noticing this time that a lot of Simtubers do fall into this "oh look a bug, what else is new", like it's just accepted at this point?

    The truth is that I have been thinking about what you said in this video for a long time. Other game developers sell downloadable content for half the price of a Sims expansion and the quality is infinitely superior. It seems like for literally every other video game the bar is always set very high and the expectations are higher. But for some reason, the Sims fanbase has such a low bar of compliance that anything the developers give them for an exorbitant price will please them. I blame most of the Sims 4 fanbase for letting EA destroy a saga so loved and beloved by many (including me) and transform it into this horrible, ugly, flat, cringey game. You said it, Satch, it's no longer The Sims, it's now a "simulation" game. Because now everything is pretending, even people are pretending that the game is fine. Unfortunately, I have no hope for the future of The Sims or Sims 5, by any means.

    I used to buy all the packs up until horse ranch (I had to draw the line when they released it as AN EXPANSION PACK) but I think you’re spot on with it being an addiction and EA knows it. They also market it in a way that feels like you’re missing out on having the game be it’s full potential (ex. The packs used to show up as filled in icons on the main menu, they show the worlds you can’t visit, the gallery shows all the packs others use that you don’t have etc.) it’s extremely manipulative!

      Werewolves and Cottage Living. I got My first pet stuff because it was free.
      It's been a yr since I bought anything, and I'm glad that werewolves and cottage living was pretty good. Everything else hasn't excited me and is super glitchy.
      And agreed on the greyed out world icons. They are banking on you breaking down and buying it to have a full list. I've learned to just ignore it. Or play offline after logging in, if I feel tempted.

    I've been playing the Sims since 1999. I own every pack for Sims 1, 2, and 3. I also have thousands of hours of play across the series.
    I started playing Sims 4 and bought every pack up until Sims 4 Cats and Dogs. That pack was the nail in the coffin for me, I couldn't shake the feeling of being taken advantage of by EA, and I haven't played the game since.
    The worst part is I am primarily a builder, something which the Sims 4 does well, but even that isn't enough to bring me back to the franchise. I play a LOT of video games and EA's business model is atrocious and predatory compared to *most* triple A studios (big asterisk there). They can't even feign ignorance at this point, they're a predatory company that's saying the quiet part out loud. And they prey upon the (mostly younger) members of the community, and those simmers who can't take off their rose tinted glasses.
    It's unfortunate all around.

    • @brigade7678
      @brigade7678 Před 6 měsíci +6

      I'd say sadly its not just rose tinted glasses, but we also just really really love the series in that deep nostalgic "personal" way. Humans struggle with not letting that emotion sweep them in even when they KNOW its not good anymore. I adore the sims so my brain wants to support and love the sims. But sadly its owned by a blood sucking monster called EA that has slowly turned up the heat over the last ~15 years, cooking us to death bc its hard to know when to jump ship. *maybe the NEXT pack will be better!!* or "well...I have 6000 mods installed and so much money sunk in- I will Brute FORCE this game to be fun/good!!"
      Its not good for any of us, but it is a little different to rose tinted. It feels more like (sorry this is rude but having been in one I mean the emotional defensiveness) someone in a terrible neglectful longterm relationship. I think the trend of several new developers working on this specific Sim daily life genre is our BEST hope we've ever had. Pressure on the company from us knowing we have other options (better or just cheaper and variety) that can hurt their empire if they don't grow and better the Sims Franchise....

    • @downkittytown
      @downkittytown Před 6 měsíci +5

      @brigade7678 totally fair. I would never dog on someone for liking what they like, and I am rooting for the franchise to change direction. If they don't change, I do hope fans of the series slowly migrate to better games that bring them that same joy.
      I think EA is adopting the business model of targeting a younger demographic, who are more naive, to replace the older fans, who recognize predatory business practices for what they are. Even those who enjoy the game are aware that the Sims 4 is far more shallow than its predecessors.
      With this in mind (and if EA doesn't change direction), the death of the franchise will be long and drawn, like harvest moon/story of seasons.

    I stopped buying packs at full price after Cats & Dogs made a color wheel available for pets only. It made me so freakin' mad that I decided not to pay the full price at all anymore. unless I get value for my money. I do agree with you that a ton of AAA games are cheaper and provide more gameplay for way less money. I love the SIMS! But I wish they would put passion and love into details and gameplay, as they used to do in previous titles. Yes, we have new features and stuff, but this is to be expected as time goes on. Even so, we are cut short on many features we used to have, and those are badly missing. Hence, I'm happy to see new game studios jumping on this genre. This is a sandbox game, and we get gameplay content without a real satisfying replayability value for a game worth more than 1000 (place your currency). They are aware of the dissatisfaction within our community! They see we want alternatives. However, I highly doubt that the next Sims Generation will be any better or that the developers will have the same amount of love and dedication to detail as they had with previous installments.
    I'm not convinced that they will provide us with what we want at the desired level of personalization in the future. In case they do? They will let us pay and bleed for those features. They genuinely think their work is fantastic. But in my humble opinion, it's just makeup with no real depth or gaming value. Especially if I compare it to earlier sims-titles. We should have a way better game now! But we don't have many features, still. And well let's face the truth, Sims4's game engine is just bad.
    Incredibly weak the newer EP-Packs are! Tell you what, that's why they were able to toss out three of them! Their quality delivery has dropped over time! The quality has changed drastically to the high dissantavange of us players. Simply put, the quality testing is subpar. However, the budget for that was slashed! They do notice they can get away with it.They use us to be their testers. That's why they don't bother to keep delivering broken packs.
    They produce half-baked packs! As an end consumer, I will at least pay half-baked prices on sale to show that I do disagree with their low quality of content. It's that simple. I would pay 100% and preorder things even - if it would be worth it, happily. But the constant EA App-Crash with each recent pack launch? And bare minimum content? Thank you, but no! Our community performs far better when our content creators, cc creators and modders are involved! This, in my humble view, shames Electronic Arts into the ground! You can't convince me otherwise because that is the only explanation for the Sims 4's continued existence. 😉 With much love to our community! 🥰😘

      Sims 5 will be the same as all the previous sim releases. They will give us base game and then slowly release all the content in packs that should have been included in base game... example generations/growing together heck even pets. So then we all sink hundreds of dollars into the game and we still won't have everything we should by the time sims 6 is due to roll around. Rinse and repeat. And can we talk about the emptiness of the tiger sanctuary (my sim was able to do a rabbit-hole to view and then donate - I thought you could also buy items there that were animal-related but guess not), and especially the national park. I think they meant regular park because that is such a small park. I re-categorized it as a municipal park and added the new items for children (hopscotch & marbles), plus a few other items form other packs so it can be a place where families can spend the day and you can meet people. Was so darn empty and lifeless straight at release! Was surprised they had 1 picnic table and a grill and a bench; no chess nor anything for children?! How pathetic! And I was hoping the night market had a bit more to offer. Half of the dishes were ones that were already in the game; I think only 25-50% of the dishes at the night market are new with the pack; not even new fish we can collect?! Very poorly done; there was so much potential. I like the building aspect, but apart from that, it's a huge set dressing. Should have made less set dressing and more lots. edit: To elaborate, I meant stop paying them for subpar quality products in the first place.
      I didn't mean to actually lower your expectations down to meet a game that works poorly or doesn't fulfill your needs.
      In hindsight I feel like I'm taking a third position considering I'm not agreeing with either one..

      I mean, I feel it's a matter of people wanting the Sims 4 to be great, and it's just... not. They keep buying packs in the hopes that it will improve their gameplay, but there are always bugs and glitches to deal with. Even without the glitches, the gameplay is so incredibly hollow to begin with compared to previous installs. When I played, I had more fun decorating, and in CAS then I did actually playing the game. Realized the problem and stopped giving my money away.

    To answer your question towards the end, I personally only buy packs that really interest me or for my current storytelling need. Like, I bought Growing Together because I do a lot of family gameplay.
    The recent packs have definitely been pretty shallow and disappointing though. Especially the Horse Ranch pack, which I was super excited for because I love horses. However, that pack lacks so much gameplay. I loved getting to make horses in CAS, but I don’t think I’ve touched the gameplay in months after playing through one storyline.
    I also have spent so much money on the Sims 4, especially because I originally had the game on my Xbox, so I had to repurchase the game and all of the packs on my pc when I switched to playing pc games.
    This makes it even more frustrating to see the lack of care that the Sims team seems to have for this game.
    As for other people, I do suspect that the “collection” mindset drives a lot of people to keep buying packs. I also think a lot of players are more casual players who aren’t involved in the online communities, so they genuinely don’t know about the controversies or that the packs are broken before they buy them. I also think a lot of younger people play this game and they may not do as much research before buying packs.

    I’ve moved on to Balders Gate where THAT company gives you hundreds of hours of gameplay AND only charges $60-70 plus gave a free update with even MORE gameplay. I won’t go back to sims until they stop doing this. I’ll buy this pack when it goes on sale. Pretty much done with EA.

    One of the worst problems with this pack besides the build mode is my tenants breaking the lease and moving out of nowhere, without a eeason, ruining my whole story. On top of everything you said, another pack that is completely broken for more than a year is the home decorator one, the career just doesn't work and I saw several people complaining about the issue with no answer from them.

    for rent was great when it was announced cause I guess we thought the apartment life system of SIms 2 was making a return and having apartments that arent fixed buildings and are anything you want is great, however they can-t justify the price if its broken incomplete and dumb, like the burglar feature was exciting to me i thought it would be like a career or you could steal stuff o money or idk, that the sims would react or you could maybe get in trouble. it feels like for rent should have been included in city living, as growing together should have been in parenthood, as horse ranch should have been in pets and as my first pet shit too
    EA are basically shamelessly using their consumers who they overcharge as testers

    As much as I love the sims, I would never spend a single dollar on a sims 4 pack ever again until EA does something with their issues. I just get it all for free from the internet, many people had told me that I should feel bad but, Why exactly? I don’t wanna get scammed on buying some extremely broken, boring and unplayable packs, I even stopped playing the game even though I started to collect expansions packs for free, because after two months I did literally everything I could :/ Ur completely right on everything, people should start to spend their money wisely, or at least get it for free if you can, don’t feel bad for it because this company has enough money to solve all the sims 4 problems, they just don’t want to. I remember that I used to buy the packs even though I could get em for free, because it’s cool to invest on something that makes u happy, and if by investing you are contributing on it improving, then is super satisfying, but at this point I don’t feel bad for downloading things for free. I came to the conclusion that many people still buy packs because they are getting logically bored of the game but don’t want to stop playing

I’m tired of hearing people go on and on about how beautiful the worlds are and how great build mode is, like that makes up for all the cons in the sims 4. I personally buy packs and expansions based on price and what gameplay matters to me (mainly careers, worlds, gameplay that adds interaction and new dynamics) since I am more of a generations simmer. Since I'm also a student, I tend to be picky about what DLC I pay for. Therefore, I have some like seasons, parenthood, realm of magic, get together, cottage lviving, sppoky stuff, moschino stuff, and a couple of other ones. I dont play a lot, so I haven't invested in as much DLC as I want. But i feel that they could have made multiple DLCs into one, & perfected them, making it so they dont have release content as often and actually take time to make quality DLC
    For rent & City living could have been one
    Parenthood & Get Together could have been one
    Vampires & Warewolves & Paranormal & Spooky suff could have been one

    I only started with TS4 this year after watching lots of content on CZcams for ages, and the thing that really drew me in is the build element, so when it comes to packs I prioritise those with BB features that I like the look of and primarily buy them during sales (For Rent is the first one I've pre-ordered primarily because of the building options it allows). I've made a number of characters and played a little bit with them, though I'm never heavily invested in their lives and often just cut them loose.

    You got it right initially about how Game Development works with bugs. The testers list the bugs, the producers prioritize them. But during the fixing of these bugs, new bugs might be created, and eventually through this cycle you get less and less critical bugs. Not to mention that sometimes bugs might end up in changes in the game design, further feeding the cycle. The issue is that there are so many other departments that depend on the release of the game/update (like marketing, budget, etc) that you just can't push further the release so some bugs will end up not being fixed for the release and patched up later.
    And with games as complex as The Sims, things complicate exponentially.

Usually, I can find enough redeeming gameplay to justify the purchase (when combined with the new items of the pack), but For Rent is really, really lacking.
