I'm confused, why do you subtract the line from the equation in some instances and not others?

Hi, at 10:58, why did you make it negative -2 if it's just distance?

Think of that -2 as the horizontal line as opposed to distance. To get the distance between the horizontal line and the function, we have to subtract the two. We started with the one on top (larger y-value) and subtracted the one on bottom (smaller y-value). Technically, we could switch the order and get the same answer because we are "squaring" the difference. Which will make the answer positive, but it's usually easier to think of it as the starting with the larger function and subtracting the smaller one.
