    This video will get you oriented around the concept of recording music into your computer from your Nord keyboard. This is especially good if you are starting from scratch and you've never done anything like this before (but always wanted to).
    Learn the basics of recording your Nord keyboard directly into your Macintosh computer via an audio interface and a program called "GarageBand."
    This video covers the following:
    • Describe what GarageBand is (DAW, Digital Audio Workstation)
    • Connections between the Nord Stage 3, the computer via the USB, and audio out into the audio inputs of the Scarlette 18i8 from the Focusrite audio interface (links below).
    • Basic GarageBand techniques such as recording in stereo, 1 bar count in, the metronome, monitor audio input, and playback. Then we talk about recording audio levels. You'll find a brief demo on how to trim the recording and set it up for a loop. We also add a virtual drummer to play along too.
    • Brief mention of Logic Pro X for sending MIDI signals out.
    Recording music from your Nord Keyboard into the computer can be a nice "next step" in your evolution of learning how to work between your Nord Keyboard and computers in general.

      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      @@juanzelayandia8282 Hmm, these are interesting results that you are getting. I'm not sure I'd be able to duplicate that exactly. If you are doing the audio recording from the Nord, the recording should capture everything it hears from the Nord, including any and all effects. Now, none of the effects settings are being captured in the MIDI per se, just the note data in this example. But when the MIDI plays the Nord back, the Nord will play as if you were playing the keys directly, which means that all the effects will be heard. Hopefully, I understand this correctly. If not, feel free to explain it another way or with more detail.

Most creators expect people to already know a BUNCH of stuff when in reality, only a handful are prepared to take on advanced information about a topic. I think this is true for tech creators, music creators, and even some how-to videos. That must just be the nature of the beast. But this is especially true for folks brand new to the world of MIDI or making music with the help of a computer, etc. It's tough enough learning music, but then you add the music tech on top, and it can be a mighty big mountain to climb! 🌋

    Your videos are very helpful! I have a Focusrite 2i2 and don't have the input ports on the backside like your Focusrite does. You mentioned at 4:08 that we could combine inputs 1 & 2 to have stereo L &R. Is there any way to have volume/pan control of stereo L & R separately in Logic? When I select the double circles for stereo in Logic, I don't seem to have separate control of left and right sides of the stereo track. Thank you for your help!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety

      @Corrie Dunn Once you have a combined stereo track like this, it may be difficult to edit each channel independently in some situations. Most effects in Logic work as stereo and I assume some allow you to adjust one channel or the other depending on the effect when you are working with a stereo track. If you're looking to work with panning and balance, I found an article here that can possibly help guide you and perhaps spur more ideas beyond what is mentioned here: whylogicprorules.com/true-stereo-panning/
      Another option you have is to create two tracks and set both to record at the same time. On track 1 record left mono and on track 2 record right mono. Doing a recording in this way allows you to have complete channel independence. But also note that you may now find that this technique works for some things well but for others cause more work for you. For example, if you want to bring down the volume of the keyboard track, you now have to adjust both tracks at the same time instead of the one track.
      Truth be told, I don't work with Logic enough to know which is better or what the pros do (record keyboards in a single stereo track or use two mono tracks panning each one to one side or the other). I tend to record keyboards on a single stereo track but my needs are also fairly simple in that respect.
      Good luck and report back if you find something interesting you want to share on this topic pls. Thanks!

      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety

      Hi Ben, thank you! Well, you can certainly record on the Zoom and transfer it over to the computer once the recording is saved as a file. Besides that, the H6 has the ability to act as a traditional audio interface as well (which is a nice plus). I have an older zoom and I don't believe I can use it as an interface in the same way. I did some quick research and found a good blog article from Sweetwater on this exact topic for you: www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/using-the-zoom-h6-as-an-audio-interface/

      @burchwoodstudio2548 Hello, Burchwood Studio, and glad you found the right video! With Nord boards, you'll ALWAYS use unbalanced 1/4" cables (TS type). Even though the Scarlett products can handle either cable type coming in, Nord boards are always sent out on an unbalanced cable on both ends. thanks for the great video! i just had a question in relation to my focusrite 2i4 and nord stage 3. I have been using the 2 front inputs on my focusrite to get this stereo image of the nord, which was working initally in logic when selecting 'input 1 and 2'. I can't put the inputs in the back of my interface as I have my monitors plugged in here. For some reason, only channel one is coming through now of the stereo image, channel 2 completely not showing up. I have tested the inputs and they work fine, and cables are also fine... do you think this would be an issue with the nord? Thank you I hope that made sense!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety

      @Isabella Jane Hi Isabella! Great question. So, here are a couple of things to try. Restart your computer. Then, triple-check that Logic is set up to use the Focusrite and toggle it off and on. Sometimes doing that resets things. After you check that and if it's still not working, you might need to actually load the Focusrite software in order to make sure your ports are still correctly configured. You'll look to use the "Focusrite Control" app that is downloadable here: customer.focusrite.com/en/support/downloads. After loading the software and looking at the configurations, you may find that it starts to work. There are video help files on the setup here: focusrite.com/en/get-started To test this in Logic, I sometimes create a new audio track and keep an eye on the input settings. Hopefully, one of these things will help. If you're still getting nowhere, you'll have to reach out to their suport. The fact that it was working fine and it isn't now could mean something new was introduced into the mix something changed without you realizing it.

If there is talking, do you also want your head to be seen when you talk or just your hands on the keys using an overhead cam (like in a training video where you are showing a student how to play something)? Once we know that, it may be easier to guide you in the right direction.

    Hey Mark! I recorded (scarlet 18i8 gen 3) today using my NS3. Sure enough I could barely see the waveform and had to put the volume all the way up. Do I lose quality if I max my nord volume? Why do the line levels in the back pick up such low volume? And lastly when exporting the song (such as to iTunes), will my piano recording be preserved in stereo? Thanks so much!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety

      Hi Omar! Nice to see you connecting your NS3 to your computer. And I'm jealous that you have Gen 3 of the Focusrite hah (I"m working with Gen 2). A few things to keep in mind here. You may have an additional option to adjust volumes directly in your Focusrite software which may compensate for things (a bit). I know using any of my Nord Keyboards in a live setting connected to either a keyboard amp or a mixing board, there is more than enough volume coming out of the channels to peel the paint. So, I don't think it's so much about the outputs on the Nord but rather something to do with how the Focusrite interprets the signals? I'm a little out of my area of expertise on this exact answer and best left to a Focusrite engineer to answer perhaps.
      And no, you don't lose quality at all when putting your Nord up to full volume so long as you don't overdrive whatever you are connected to. At the end of the day, the recording process is a balance of initial input and how that input is interpreted by both the interface and GarageBand (in this case). All levels are a factor.
      Your question about iTunes and stereo. Yes, absolutely, your piano will be preserved in stereo so long as you record it in stereo. You'll be able to play it back and immediately tell if it's in stereo or not. If not, it sounds like it's coming out of an old "AM radio". This happened to me a lot in the beginning until I realized I have to set Garageband to record in stereo versus a mono channel. Hope all this helps!

    Thanks!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Gili! So connecting your Nord Keyboard to the computer to power MIDI is a simple matter of plugging in the USB cable from the Nord to the computer. (No audio interface is required). Just plug and play. You'll see right away this working with GarageBand. Now, having MIDI trigger your Nord keyboard, on the other hand, is a little more complex. That's because there are more settings on the computer side of things to get that to work. First of all, it requires Logic Pro X or something similar. GarageBand cannot send out MIDI to external instruments - it can only receive MIDI. This would make a good video actually so I'll consider adding it to the long-term possibilities list. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏽

      Hmm. Assuming you are using GarageBand and you want to do an audio recording, please double check this:
      1) Go into GarageBand Prefs and select the Audio/MIDI icon. Make sure you have the mAudio interface selected there for the input and output device.
      2) Make sure you create a new track as an "Audio" track.
      3) While creating the track, at the bottom of that popup track window you'll see an option called "Input". Make sure that correlates to the inputs you are using on the mAudio.
      4) Select the track you just created
      5) Push the record button and see if any audio lines are drawn from your performance. If so, you have success.

      @Alaa Khalil you should be able to do this with the Native Instruments. It all depends if the internal configuration allows channels 1 and 2 to be sent as stereo to the computer and recognized by GarageBand as stereo on a single stereo track. My guess is that this is no problem. If you have one already, it would be something you could test with any stereo keyboard if you have one available.

      Hello @Luis Tejara - sorry for the delay in this response. Yes, you can connect your speakers directly to the interface, and yes you can hear both the Nord keyboards and the sounds that come from the computer at the same time. The Interface in many ways acts like a sort of mixing board so long as it has multiple inputs. Those multiple inputs can output to either speakers or headphones (all at the same time) - just like a mixing board can. The difference here is that the interface can also double as a connection to the computer. Note that some mixing boards can also act as an interface too, so there is a lot of cross-over with equipment these days. Hope that helps answer the question!

And aren't the front combo inputs on the Focusrite stereo, that is, if I connect the headphone jack from the Nord to the XLR with a TRS cable, I should get a stereo input, right?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety

      Hi Tony. I think the answer to all your questions is yes. You can use the headphone jack on the Nord and connect it to the inputs (L & R). In fact, you see an example of this in this video if you look closely. Neither of the standard outputs are being used but the headphone jack does have a cable coming out from the back: czcams.com/video/GGkGKZ6h2Cc/video.html
      And yes, I believe the front inputs of the Focusrite are in fact combo that can be used as XLR or 1/4". I think you could still just get two standard 1/4 unbalanced cables and connect directly to inputs 1 and 2. The headphones however would give you more output in theory than the standard outputs in the back of the Nord. I wonder if that's why in that video I linked to above in this comment is demonstrating it done in that way?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 2 lety

      Hello @Random Vlogs All of this is very possible:
      1) To learn how to sample with your Nord Keyboard (enroll in my free course: "Master The Nord Sample Editor"): www.MyKeysToMusic.com
      2) To control your Electro 6 using an external keyboard's pitch bend, watch my CZcams video here: czcams.com/video/YRYJf2J4fO4/video.html BUT WAIT, this requires that you actually play the Roland and the pitch bend. You can't play the Nord while using the Roland pitch bend. In other words, the pitch bend ONLY works if you are actually triggering the notes from the external keyboard.
      3) Once you have all that setup, you can connect the two keyboards via a simple MIDI connection from the Roland to the Electro and layer two sounds triggered from the Roland or switch up the connections and do the reverse (or do both at the same time). I am assuming you have the one of the Boutiques that actually include the keyboard of course. I wasn't sure which one you are using exactly.
      Report back if you get all this going the way you like or if you have more questions...

      Hello Dylan - thanks for your comment and question. First, try connecting your L and R out from the Nord to the front of the Focusrite and you should see a big difference in output. In addition, locate the "level" knob on your Nord Lead A1 (top right). Turning this up may also give you a small boost depending on the program. Now, with that said, you may still be able to use the line inputs from the back and then enhance the volume in your DAW and it may still sound good. This may depend on your DAW. You could also consider a pre-amp and continue and then continue to use the line inputs in the back.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety

      Correct. You also have the choice to purchase a USB mic(s) instead of where you could connect directly to the computer without the need for the interface at all. Nowadays, the USB mic options are plentiful and some quite good, in fact. ehomerecordingstudio.com/usb-microphones/
      However as a pro musician, you'd never show up to a gig with a USB mic - you'd be laughed right out of the venue not because they are not necessarily good, but it's like showing up to a gas station asking where the electric car chargers are - we're not there yet.. Yet there is one mic that is both (see# 7 in the article in the link above). Things are changing fast out there. Making music can be a high-tech expedition compared to the way it has been for years and years. Good luck with your recordings!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 2 lety

      Hello @Mr. Apartment Thanks for your question. If you haven't already solved this, have a look at the Scarlett software to be sure your inputs from the modular synth are being routed properly to your DAW (output). Then in GarageBand, you don't have to do anything special except that you'll pick the input that shows 1 and 2 as overlapping circles when you create your track. Once it's recording in GarageBand, you should see two wav file graphics indicating that you are indeed recording in stereo on the one track. Then the playback is assigned via GarageBand (see the audio settings). Then if you are having it play back through the Scarlett, you'll need to again make sure the Scarlett software is routing the input from the DAW to your headphones (assuming your headphones and/or speakers connected connected to the Scarlett). Hope that helps get you started.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you and great question. Nord keyboards do not send audio through the USB port whatsoever. They do, however, send MIDI through the USB jack. So, if you want to record your Nord keyboard, the only way to do it is with the audio jacks (left and right / 1 and 2). That means you're going to need an audio interface to convert the audio signal into a digital signal for the computer.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 2 lety

      Hello @Carolina Gonzalez Thanks for your question. So, you could try using two cables coming out of your keyboard into the two mono inputs. Then go into GarageBand and see if it sees this two mono inputs with a stereo option as well (just like you see in the video here). It might "just work." However, it really depends on if the interface can do this or not. It's easy enough to try. Just create a new track in GarageBand and see what options you have. If you see inputs 1 + 2 (with overlapping circle icons when you pick the track), then it's likely your interface can present both mono signals as a stereo signal into the single track in GarageBand. Good luck and feel free to report back.

      @R Sorry for the delay on this. So, you'll need to plug in the M-Audio keystation to a "USB MIDI Host" like a computer or iPad. You could power it up using the USB port and then use the traditional MIDI cable (5-Pin DIN) and plug that directly into the Focusrite if it has such a connection. For the most part, these controllers are designed to be plugged in directly to a computer since they don't make sound on their own and people are using them as controllers for their favorite DAW (digital audio workstation). Hope that helps. Here's a video explaining the concepts a bit here: czcams.com/video/neXswJJcatc/video.html

      @alessandrodicostanzo2530 Hello! Great question, actually. From the Nord keyboard, you'll be using a standard 1/4" (6.3 mm) audio cable into the audio interface. Please ensure it's the "TS" type cable (tip sleeve) as well. Although the audio interface can accept multiple cable types, the Nord keyboards require the use of a traditional guitar audio cable because the outputs from the Nord are "unbalanced," which means you are to use the tip/sleeve cable only (versus the tip/ring/sleeve type). Good luck with your recordings!

      @Ice.Pianist Thanks for your question and nice to have a fellow CZcams creator come by for a visit.
      If you want to sing and play at the same time the condenser mic will pick up the noise from the keys and there is no way of getting around that. The question is will it be noticeable in the final mix or not? I highly recommend this video czcams.com/video/uKKSKI9XB7I/video.html where you'll find the exact answers you are looking for. AND I also recommend the Focusrite 4i4 as shown later in that video. The Scarlett Solo won't provide enough inputs for you to do all this. In addition, your keyboard needs 2 cables - one for the left and one for the right channel. It may not sound good if you record in mono.
      If you want absolute isolation of the vocals, you'll need either a different type of mic or record your vocals separately. I noticed you don't typically show your face on your videos so it would be easy to record the vocals separately while the video shows you playing? Hope this helps get you started. Do watch the video above and best of luck!

      @@itsMizaa I like the 4i4 best out of the ones you mentioned. I think the 2i2 is going to be too limiting for you long term as the 4i4 provides much more flexibility long-term. For example, if you ever add a second keyboard or want to join with a guitarist and record together, the 4i4 has you covered. I'm sure the Behringer is a good unit as well but I can't speak for it directly since I don't own it. I can tell you that the Focusrite is built to last and I've been using mine daily for several hours a day since 2017 and it has yet to fail me. At this point, I don't think I'll ever wear it out! Hey there blobdang - sorry for the delay on this response. The CZcams email notifications have stopped working (this is sometimes a problem for creators). But anyway, congrats on getting this connected. So yes, in order to sync up the video of you playing from your iPhone along with your recording of the synth, you'll need to use a video editor of some sort. You can consider something as available as iMovie (Mac only) (www.apple.com/imovie/) or you can invest in something a bit more powerful called "Screenflow" (www.telestream.net/screenflow/overview.htm) - that's what I'm using at the moment (also Mac only). So you'd take your video file from your phone and combine that with your finished recording (you could export as an MP3 from GarageBand). Sync both in the video editor and then export and publish. Hmm - maybe I should make a "content creator series" specific to keyboard players where people want to make their own videos/recordings. Now you got me thinking. Let me know if that answers the question, feel free to ask more as you get to the next hurdle.

If I start making videos on "how I make videos", that could really be intended for a different audience or a different channel altogether. But a video on how to get a recorded video to sync with sound for the purposes of making a simple music video for musicians, that might not be out of the question.

      Hey Jeff! Great question. In fact, I had to brush up on my understanding of these just to be sure. So, I just double-checked and I'm using standard TS cables out of the Nord keyboards into the Focusrite. Then from the Focusrite out to the monitors (speakers), I'm using TRS cables. I've had good results in all the years I've done it this way thus far. (Note that all my cables are between 6' and 10' (in case you were wondering). Thanks, this is a really good question. Oh and for those who are watching and reading this and want to learn more details about TS and TRS cables, you can go here: czcams.com/video/9Mdgr1j2dFQ/video.html

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Antonio. I can see this being one of the best questions ever for a Focusrite setup and I'm afraid I don't immediately know the best answer for you here but I have some initial thoughts on this. Personally, I don't use MIDI through the Focusrite but that's only because I'm constantly connecting the Nord keyboard to the Nord Sound Manager or the Nord Sample Editor 3 to the computer. Therefore, I always have my Nord keyboard connected directly to the computer and of course, I use a separate USB connector for my Focusrite as well. Yes, that takes up 2 USB ports. I combat that problem by using a 7 port powered USB hub because I also have 4 cameras that I need to connect along with 2 external hard drives. So, I'm already in hot water with the USB Gods so for me, adding one more USB is not going to make a difference. But I can see where it would make a difference for most everyone else. Therefore, if you're looking to save on USB ports, I would use the traditional MIDI ports on the back of your Focusrite and connect that to your Nord keyboard. Oh, the other reason why people may go directly to USB from the Nord and sacrifice having 2 USB connections to the computer is the fact that they may already be using the traditional MIDI from the Nord to another keyboard in their studio setup. I hope that helps! At the end of the day, the choice is yours on which direction to choose and it's nice to have both options.

    Hi Marc, best detailed explanation with REALLY useful diagrams. Great work!!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Allan Joel Sallan. Great question. So, essentially anything with a USB port can plug directly into the computer without the need for an audio interface from the get-go. There is one exception to this if you want to record audio from a given instrument and record that into GarageBand too.
      ⦿ In the case of the USB microphone, you'll simply plug that into the computer and GarageBand will see it as an audio source. You'd set up an audio track in GB and you're good to go for recording it.
      ⦿ In the case of the piano with the USB port, the same thing applies. You'll be able to plug it into the computer and directly control virtual instruments via MIDI in GarageBand.
      ⦿ If you want to record the "sounds" from the piano into GarageBand you'll likely need an audio interface. Although in some cases, both sounds and MIDI are transferred over the USB cable into a computer - but not always. You'll have to look in your manual for that detailed info. In the case of Nord keyboards, for example, ONLY MIDI is transferred over the USB cable. So, this is why in that case, an audio interface would be needed to record the audio from the Nord keyboards. The interface transforms the analog audio signals from the keyboard into digital audio (something the computer can understand and record).
      Hopefully, that helps. Feel feel to continue asking questions until we get you to your answer. 😃

    Dear Marc, I have a yamaha digital piano which got a type-b port. I ususally connect the piano with ipad pro(type-b to type-c) or with macbook air(type b to usb), therefore garageband could work with the piano. Now, if i buy an audio interface like focusrite 2i2, despite the analog port you introduced , is it good to connect piano with focusrite(type-b to usb)? which one is better and why? Thanks

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety

      Hi Jimmy! Thanks for your question. If I'm understanding you correctly, you're wondering if it is good to connect the piano to the Focusrite using the USB port versus the audio ports. If that's the case, then you would connect the piano to the audio inputs only to the Focusrite. The USB on the Focusrite is reserved for the computer (or the iPad) but not a keyboard. The 2i2 specifically doesn't have additional accommodations for MIDI. The Focusrite units are primarily meant to take in analog audio and convert that to digital audio for a computer. Now the bigger Focusrite models can do both where they can handle the analog audio as well as take in MIDI to/from a given keyboard. This makes it so that you can use the one interface to do both audio and MIDI (more convenient) and means only a single USB cable to the computer from the Focusrite in that case.
      So, in your case, you'll connect the piano audio cables to the Focusrite and you'll take your USB out from the piano into the computer to drive your MIDI in Garageband. Then you'll have an additional USB from the Focusrite to the computer as well. I think that is the ideal setup here. And keep in mind, you only need the USB from the piano to the computer if you want to drive MIDI. You don't need that if you just want to record the audio.
      There is one thing to mention with all this. Some keyboards/devices can output both MIDI as well as audio from their USB port which can be a source of confusion in this case. The Boss RC-505 looper for example sends audio out its USB port as an option. Not sure if your Yamaha can do that or not but I thought it was worth mentioning. If your keyboard can in fact output audio from its USB port, then you wouldn't need the Focusrite unit at all. You could record directly into GarageBand. Good luck! 🎹

      Hello @Akshay Dwivedi
      Hmm, My first guess would be that there is something not quite right with either the configuration software that comes with the Audient or something in Cubase. You may want to troubleshoot this in steps:
      1) Disconnect everything
      2) First connect your Nord Output 1 & 2 into the Input of the Audient. Then, test to be sure you hear the Nord keyboard when you plug headphones into the Audient front headphones jack.
      If that works proceed.
      3) Now connect the outputs from the Audient into the Yamaha speakers. Do not use the XLR option. Use the 1/4 option and you can try using TRS cable types. I'm not sure what is compatible with that interface exactly. Now play. Do you hear sound coming from the speakers? If not, try a standard TS cable. Also make sure you are connected from the Audient using the correct outputs - use the ones labeled with a speaker icon. If you still don't hear anything, load up your Audient software and connect to your computer. You may have to adjust the audio routing configuration for your interface. I know that on the Focusrite products, you have to configure things before the sound goes where it needs to.
      If that works proceed
      4) Now connect the Audient to your computer if you haven't already done so and load up Cubase. In the Cubase settings, you'll need to select your interface for both sound input and output if you can. Play the board and see if you can see any meters running. If so, that means that Cubase is hearing things.
      5) Try recording into Cubase. You can record while listening to the headphones still connected to Audient.
      6) Try playing back the recording. You should hear sound from both your headphones as well as the speakers. If not, it's either because your DAW isn't sending audio out to the interface OR the interface is not set to route the sound coming in from the DAW back out to the speakers/headphones.
      Report back once you break it down and take it in small steps like this. It really helps troubleshoot where the problem is in most cases.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety +1

      What I have found out as well as many others as well is that the Focusrite line levels for the back jacks are very weak compared to the front. That coupled with the Nord keyboard may be too low for most things. I do use these jacks in the back (as I explained in my video) and the signal is weak even with full volume. However, I mostly connect my keyboards using a software program called "Screenflow" which allows me to raise the volume and it doesn't seem to have any negative effect. The Screenflow and Focusrite combination allows me to split all the audio into separate channels which is essential for me when I make these videos. I have used the front jacks as well and the signal level is night and day by comparison. Perhaps the jacks in the back work well for guitars and such but not as well suited to the Nord line of keyboards? Others have reported that it happens too with their Yamaha's and such and they claim it has to do with the line levels of the Focusrite architecture.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety

      Hello Sonaper! Since the KeyLab is only a MIDI controller and does not have an internal sound engine, it has to be connected to a hardware synthesizer or a computer in order for it to work. If you are only interested in playing sounds from your DAW (like in this case GarageBand), you can directly connect the KeyLab to the computer via a USB cable - there is no need for an audio interface such as the Scarlett in this case. The main reason people get a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is if they have analog audio they need converted to digital for recording into a computer. This usually comes in the form of a microphone, a bass/electric guitar. or an electronic keyboard that has built-in sounds. If you only have the Keylab 88 mk2 keyboard, just connect it to your computer directly and have it control GarageBand and/or Logic Pro X and control the built-in sounds or purchase add'l VST instrument packs such as these: www.productionmusiclive.com/blogs/news/top-10-most-popular-vst-synthesizers

(affiliate link): amzn.to/2TAdGUy. Note that there are a million combinations of these based on color, cable type, and length, etc. The key here is to get two of them. You can also get cables that are straight on either end or you can get one end that has a 90-degree angle. It's up to you on that. I personally prefer the cables with the tweed cloth jacket because they tangle less than the other type in my opinion. Plus the entire cable world for computers and music is going in this direction with these "cloth jackets" now. In fact, everything on this page pretty here should work for you in this regard: amzn.to/34DmP4Y (make sure you get the "TS" type versus the "TRS" type. "TS" stands for "Tip/Sleeve" versus "TRS" which stands for "Tip/Ring/Sleeve". Nearly everything on the page I sent you just now is going to be 1/4 TS cables which will work for your Nord keyboard and your interface.

      Hello @Yuri Vb! So, there is no way to do this as the sounds are in a proprietary format and one that Logic Pro X cannot understand. Sorry, I don't have a better answer for you. You still have to record one file after another I'm afraid... Thanks for your question!

    does the audio interface need loopback to do this?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      Hello - the answer to this is yes, mostly. An interface will typically be able to re-route audio from what the computer hears simply by selecting the audio interface when you select the sound output device from your computer. This allows you to play your DAW and hear it all through your interface (versus hearing it directly from headphones connected to the computer). So, technically, that concept is "loopback" and interfaces do this out of the box. Have a look at this affiliate blog post of loopback fully explained here by our friends at Sweetwater: imp.i114863.net/jWo41v
      From a recording perspective, if you want to hear what you are playing while you are recording AND you want to hear the existing tracks in your DAW, then I think the best way to go about this is to make sure your DAW is sending its sound to the interface along with your keyboard at the same time. (All sound should be listened to with your speakers and/or headphones connected to the interface - do not be tempted to plug your headphones into the computer directly). Now, where this starts to get confusing is that your DAW likely has the ability to provide "input monitoring," which will let you hear whatever sound is coming in on that track (while recording). However, if you turn that on, you may find this causes a delay in the sound when you play. I'd refer to the connections again at the beginning of the video and start with that as your setup.
      Good luck!

    Hi Marc, thank you for the great video! I'm about to buy a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for connecting a microphone or guitar or in our case the nord stage 3 keyboard. What i observed now is that you connected your Nord Keyboard with the Interface through the two line inputs in the back. Unfortunately the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 doesn't have those... Is it still possible to connect my Nord Keyboard with this kind of interface? Thanks for helping me!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Joel! So, I think you should be able to plug in the Left output into channel 1 and the Right output into channel 2. Then, within the Focusrite software, you should be able to designate that 1 and two are combined as stereo. Have a look at the manual if it indicates if that option is possible or not. The key here is you want to make sure that your Nord keyboard is presented with a proper left and right or else it will sound very "flat" by comparison. I just tried plugging my Nord into the first two front channels on my Focusrite here and although I heard a sound out of both channels, it very flat and not correct. To compare, just listen to your Nord while having headphones plugged in directly to the back of the Nord. That should sound similar once you have the Focusrite properly configured. If the sound out of the Focusrite sounds a bit flat or one-dimensional after you get everything connected, then the settings are not correct.

      @Martin Jahaziel Try loading up the "Focusrite Control App" on your computer if you haven't already. It allows you to route the sound. Doing so might solve your issue. Hello @ Bob Jones. I have looked at the Casio manual for your keyboard just now. It appears that it has a single mini (1/8") jack for headphones. What you can do is get a simple adapter like this (affiliate link): and that should allow you to connect to L and R in on your Scarlett 2i2: amzn.to/3flSUqs Please report back if this all works out for you...

    Hi! Can I Connect Yamaha p115 keyboard to focus scarlett solo? I know that behind scarlett solo there are only 2 output holes, but i like to try connect it in jack hole in for guitar (in front of scarlett solo). Thank you

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety +1

      @Mirko Pedrazzi Good news! Yes, you should be able to do this by using the jack on the front panel of the Focusrite - the same one used for the guitar. So, you would use a single cable from the Left output on the Yamaha into the Focusrite.
      I took the liberty to read this excerpt found in the Yamaha user manual:
      "Use only the [L/ L+R] AUX OUT jack if you wish to output the digital piano’s
      sound in mono."
      From there, the sound signal will travel to the computer by way of the USB port on the back of the Focusrite. As a friendly reminder, the output jacks you see on the back of the Focusrite are more for powered speakers. Now keep in mind that if you upgrade to a Focusrite that has two input jacks, you'd have the ability to receive a stereo sound from both the left and right jacks from this keyboard or any other. That would then let you record your keyboard track in stereo which would in theory sound better. But again, the good news is that your Yamaha already sends a mono signal out of the one Left output which will present itself in both 'speakers' and enable you to immediately record something today without investing in any additional equipment. Good luck!

    Thank you Marc. Focusrite comes with a Focusrite controls and you have not mentioned anything about it. Is it useful? Instead of a Nord Keyboard, I have a Roland virtual accordion FR3-x. The output is the same as the keyboard. My audio is set to my scarlett 4i4. I hear well when i listen to your tutorial but I only get sound in my left ear when I'm recording. Any suggestions? I notice 2 lines in your Garageband I only have one although my setup (with Scarlett 4i4) 3 and 4 in stereo just like your 7-8. What am I doing wrong. Thank you

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety

      @Marcel Milot. Thanks for your question and let me tell you that the Roland virtual accordion you are using appears to be one heck of an incredible instrument. Just watched the video here: czcams.com/video/1arflmuTChA/video.html and man - that is amazing. I played alto sax in high school and college and my friend played the accordion. We did a few gigs in that combination - it works well and I have always appreciated the accordion from a distance. I think I'm intimidated by the left-hand work. 😜
      So, the Focusrite software allows you to "route" your connections and that may be the issue here. However, in GarageBand, you are going to pick a "mono" input for your instrument (not a stereo input). Try this first before playing with the Focusrite software. Connect your accordion to channel #1 on the front of your Focusrite instead of the back. Then in GarageBand pick just channel 1. You should then hear it in both ears. Please report back if you can. Thanks!

    Would you be able to record the Nord as Mono in channel one if you only have one of those cables?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 3 lety

      Hello @Malachi Hooper. You don't need a special cable to record the Nord in Mono. You can use a typical TS cable 1/4 coming out of the Nord on Output 1 for example. At that point, you'll be in Mono and you'll hear sound coming from either side UNTIL you use an effect like Delay with Ping Pong or the Pan effect. If you have a Stage or an Electro, you can additionally put the keyboard in "Mono" mode which will take care of that. In the end, recording your keyboard in Mono mode will provide for a more "flatter" sound and it's not ideal by any means. Read my comment to Ricky Ao here (czcams.com/users/attribution_link?a=irHEoXJCpxzF7xQT&u=/watch%3Fv%3DUU6j5o3YfaA%26lc%3DUgzsDs5P54fSEVOsQdp4AaABAg.9LMtecpWmmP9LmqHc8Wi3z%26feature%3Dem-comments) where I explain this in more detail. Hi ! I have a question. Is it better to use TS cables left and right or 2 TRS cables, or eventually one TRS cable in stereo ? I’m using 2 TRS cables, sounds pretty good but sometimes it sounds too mellow and I suppose that TS would be slightly clearer (I take care of gain and distorsion of course).
    Could you give me your opinion ? Thanks for your videos !

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 7 měsíci +1

      @louissaussier6766 Hello Louis! So, technically speaking, you always want to use a standard TS cables coming out of the Nord as they only support unbalanced outputs. Even though the Focusrite products accept either cable type, Nord delivers only via TS (technically speaking). You are free to use TRS cables from the Focusrite to the speakers/PA of course, so long as your equipment on the receiving end of that is compatible with that as well. Also make sure your Focusrite is setup to treat the incoming inputs as stereo. By default , Focusrite products treat incoming signals as mono in my experience. I have a video on that here for your one-time setup: czcams.com/video/Mx2O7fY85xc/video.htmlfeature=shared
