    What’s the difference between this method and bouncing the midi track to audio?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před měsícem +1

      @MsTessG Hi Tess! Well, technically speaking, there is no difference in the end result as far as I can tell. And, I think it's actually easier to "Bounce in Place" by right-clicking on a given MIDI segment and then letting it do its thing (easier to set up). Truth be told, when I made this video, I didn't realize (or perhaps it wasn't a feature back then) that you could bounce in place from MIDI to audio. Works like a charm! I also appreciate that when you do this when the MIDI is assigned to a software instrument, the bounce happens at light speed because it renders it internally (versus real time). Good points - I'm going to pin this comment as a time saver for others.
      Pro Tip: when you "Bounce in Place," the default behavior is for Logic to create a brand new audio track each time. If, however, you already have an audio track you want to use, you can select that first, then right-click on the MIDI you want to bounce. By doing this the screen will provide another option for you to use the "Selected track," which will then add your MIDI/audio to your existing audio track without having to create a new audio track each time.

      Thank you @Samuel L It's very nice of you to leave a comment like this. As I mentioned in the video, this is sort of a hard thing to cover in detail, let alone explain in a single title. But the end result works, I think!
      Look for more videos around MIDI and such in the coming months. The only reason I've been reluctant to tackle these topics is the massive amount of tech support that goes along with it here in the comments. Everyone wants an advanced setup, but the pain to get there can be a long-uphill battle at times. Yet, 9 times out of 10, it's worth it when people finally achieve the results they were going for and are happy with what they end up learning as a result along the way.

The first is to understand the tech part and the second is to continue your journey as a keyboardist and all the challenges that go along with that! But, using MIDI will allow you to forgive a lot of sins and have you fix up your performance as needed. Good luck on your journey!

    Thank you so much!
    Being a Cubase user for years, i swapped to Logic a while back and all tutorials for using external synths advise using the External Instrument plugin.
    I've had endless problems with that plugin. Track mutes/Solos don't work, even switching tracks on and off doesn't always mute them. there's teriible 'phasing' introduced by the round trip latency and in the end the whole thing becomes pointless at the point of having to record the audio to separate audio tracks for final mixing (as i've always done in Cubase) anyway.
    So stupid I didn't try the same method as i used to use in Cubase, like you do here.
    I wrongly asumed from all these tutorials that the external instrument plugin was the only method in Logic. Swear i tried this method when i forst got Logic installed... I bet i had some stupid routing or something going on.
    So glad to find out how to just record as i used to in Cubase (a folder track full of MIdi tracks to record note data and then a folder track of audio channels to record the synth's audio for mix.) Clean. Simple. Solid.

    This is exactly what I was looking for. So great to hear technical advice from a real musician!
    Thank you so much for confirming that my design for a new setup is correct (especially "no External Hardware plugin") .
    I've used Logic between 1991 and 2003, then I had to switch to Windows. I stopped music production for about 15 years, then got the bug (and time) again. I had this monster PC fitted for high-end 3D work, so I tried every DAW on earth in Windows, and none really fitted the workflow you describe here (which is as old-school as it gets, and the best if you work with external hardware.) I settled on Mixbus 32c for a while, but it's buggy and the UI highly inconsistent, mostly because it's based on Ardour, and that is such a pain in the a**...
    I recently bought the new Mac Mini for other tasks, and suddenly realized I could USE LOGIC AGAIN on that powerful little beast!
    It's such a great feeling to have a deep, clearly designed and non-buggy DAW again. Now I need to modify my MOTU AVB audio setup and Iconnectivity MIDI routings, and find out why names of I/O are replaced by numbers in some of the Logic UI.
    Thanks again, and warmest congratulations on the piano playing!

    @UrbanGarden-rf5op Před měsícem

    Great tutorial, as usual.
    I will pass this on to my buddy,
    who has adopted my "old" Stage 3.
    But…
    I realise that I am venturing in to the advanced course,
    but still I think it’s good to know.
    I don't think you mentioned the monitor issue
    when capturing the audio.
    I have no personal experience of the Scarlett,
    so that may not be an issue in this specific case.
    You began by listening to the Nord directly,
    through the audio interface.
    When you then record the audio and assign the output of
    the Logic track to main out, you create another discrete audio path.
    One directly from the input of the audio interface
    and one through Logic to the audio interface.
    Due to the latency of the software and the serial nature of MIDI 1.0,
    one signal will be delayed, causing a static phaser-like sound.
    Most capable audio interfaces will have the
    possibility to affect the routing/monitor chains.
    So I would use the direct monitoring during the MIDI part
    and then switch the monitor routing to Logics output when recording audio.
    That way you’ll hear the entire recording chain, which is preferable.
    A quick and dirty method is to, at first,
    leave the output of the Logic track unassigned.
    And only assign it when the audio recording part is finished
    and you’ve muted the MIDI track.
    In this case I would listen to the entire recorded audio track
    for validation of the audio quality.
    Just my 2 cents 𝄢🎶

    Love these videos! You were talking about enhancing the piano sound with effects. I'm in the process of trying to sculpt a piano sound (reverb, compression, etc.) Would love to see a video of you making "your perfect piano sound." Thanks for the videos :)

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 2 lety

      Hello Ross. What you heard here in this video is a solo piano. For that style, you can use just about any of the large Nord Grand pianos (Royal Grand 3D and/or White Grand) and go from there. You can apply the "soft" EQ setting if you're looking for a rich texture and add a healthy dose of reverb which is a decent setting for solo piano like this. That will get you in the ballpark I think. Then work with the EQ (maybe compression, but for sure EQ). You can always add a bit of delay too to taste which is an interesting and neat effect for piano sounds I like at times.
      If however, you're in a band setting, a lot of people turn to the "Bright Grand" which favors the higher frequency levels a bit which people report tends to "cut through" the mix a whole lot better. So, when looking for the "perfect" piano sound, I think you have to consider the context of the music you are playing, the instrumentation of that music, and the room you find yourself in (if performing live). For example, if you use a "lush grand sound" during a gig, you will likely be disappointed fighting against 2 guitars, bass, and drums. What sounded so beautiful at home will likely sound "terrible" playing live. So, plan accordingly and sometimes you won't know exactly what the final adjustments will be until you hear it through once or twice.

    Great video Marc!!! You've also convinced me to upgrade to Logic Pro from Gar(b)ageBand and purchase a Focusrite audio interface -- which will also allow me to incorporate my old Yamaha DX7 and Kurzweil Mark 10 keyboards into the mix since they use the old-style MIDI cables.

      Wonderful @davevaebutyoy And long time no speak. Hope all is well. I think it's a worthy upgrade. Be warned... There is a NEAR LIFETIME of learning you can have with Logic Pro - it's' that huge. But yet, things like basic recording (as you've seen in this video) are only a touch more difficult than GarageBand. And the topper on the cake is to eventually use MainStage for your live rig to incorporate the old DX7 ad Kurzweil. But Logic will play with these boards nicely. @@lospopularos I do have plans on doing more with Logic later in the year or next. Covering things like how it interacts with Nord keyboards in particular. The new Nord Stage 4 for example, has more powerful MIDI options and flexibility defining when and how the CC messages are handled and I think people would appreciate seeing the details on all that. To this day, there seems to be a shroud of "Mystery in MIDI" that people don't dare explore for fear of being overwhelmed. I get that! • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      If I understand your question correctly, there is no difference in audio quality since you are recording everything directly from the keyboard audio as the original source. MIDI is just the trigger for the notes. We're not really "bouncing" in this situation. We're making our first audio recording directly from the keyboard for the first time (after the MIDI is fixed). Let me know if this answers the question or please ask your question in a different way if I'm not getting it.

(Look for the 2 "line out" ports on your Silent interface - this is where the audio will come from back into logic by way of the Scarlett).

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 2 lety

      Hello @Julie Spangler Thanks for your comment and question! Yes, you can send multiple MIDI tracks back to the Nord separated by 2 channels (one for Panel A and one for Panell B) if you'd like. And yes, the DAW should have no problem making a track assigned to each channel (two tracks total). You are however limited to 2 independent channels. And what you'll "hear" is whatever each engine on the Nord is active. After you are happy with a particular track's performance (and sound), you can bounce that to an actual audio recording and commit it. Then that frees up your Nord for track 3, 4, 5 and so on as you repeat the process. But the bottom line is you could have MIDI driving two channels/tracks at the same time with the Nord suppling the sound in real-time for both - each on its own panel. Hopefully that answers the question and don't be shy if you have more questions. Thanks for being a fan...

    I have a question...Does recording the midi record also the knob positions? In other words, if I record a section and while playing I turn the mod wheel or change the cutoff frequency of a filter when playing it back in order to record the sound, will the keyboard perform those changes in setting too?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 5 měsíci

      @enricogiust Hello Enrico. Sorry for the massive delay with this response. By now you may have already figured this out but the short answer is "Yes!" all the knob positions and buttons send MIDI out to be captured in a DAW in the areas that Nord programmed them. You can see a list of CC #s in the back of the manual of a given Nord keyboard. And, so long as your keyboard is set to send/receive MIDI CC settings, when you play back the MIDI, the Nord will follow suit. So yes, you can record and play back the automate MIDI performance of your Nord keyboard for other items beyond just the notes (similar to how your DAW captures the sustain pedal).

      @ProdAGee Hello Prod-A-Gee, absolutely! Nord keyboards can be used as a MIDI controller (of sorts) to drive MIDI into Logic which would then trigger Logic sounds. Thanks ! This is an excellent explanation from the ground up. I was also exactly in tune with you in the editing and also do my own interpretations of classical pieces. What I want to do is create sounds on my synth and use these to build up tracks - and layer other tracks eg drums on top. I want to be able to edit the synth takes (in case of wrong notes and timing) and also align the timing of the synth takes with the other tracks (eg druns). I can use flex time in garageband to adjust the timing of the audio track but not the pitch (can in logicpro). I can't quantise an audiotrack - can only do in midi. So in summary I want to be able to capture the midi and audio at the same time - so that the midi plays the synth sound. The USB connection from my synth only carries midi - but if I use logicpro then can the midi play the synth? And if yes then do I need an audio interface ? Sorry if sounds a bit confused but hope you can understand what I'm trying to accomplish. Thanks

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 2 měsíci

      @richie694 Richard, sorry for the delay on this response. Logic/GarageBand should both allow you you to capture MIDI and Audio at the same time (even if that audio comes from the MIDI track you are recording). czcams.com/video/8mrKV35_45Q/video.htmlfeature=shared.
      I still think that the best way to do all this would be to have the MIDI track as your foundation. Fix all that and get it perfect. Then use the MIDI to trigger the audio. All tempo can be synced with the master track in Logic/GarageBand.
      Pro tip: If you are starting with a pre-recorded audio track from a famous song and you want to synth to that and then add your own parts, you'll use Logic to determine the tempo first upon importing the audio for the first time. Then build your MIDI around that original tempo, and then finally your audio. That's what I had to do for this song: czcams.com/video/-_bJlgLlutU/video.htmlfeature=shared

      Yes you can! In fact, this is a straightforward setup. You simply connect the Nord USB cable to the computer and you should have MIDI signals coming through to Logic out of the box (much like any other controller would provide). Just make sure that your "Global MIDI" channel on the Nord is on. Alternatively, you can dedicate the "Extern" section to your computer and separate things that way. Hello. Don’t you have to turn off local control in the Nord Piano5 before recording the midi??

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      Hello Luis - I think the choice is yours on this, and it depends on how you ultimately have it set up. When I "perform" and record the MIDI, I like to hear the actual keyboard via the interface. So, I leave local control on, and I also remove any "monitoring" of the track from Logic. This allows me to have zero lag when recording, which I think is essential. If I instead turned off local control, I wouldn't hear the Nord keyboard at all unless I also turned on the track monitor in Logic. This would introduce potential lag. Or I suppose I could just listen to the virtual instrument sounds from Logic (which may be ok, too), and record the MIDI that way. But doing it that way won't represent what the final product will sound like if, in fact my final product is to hear the sounds from the external keyboard. Local control set to off really only applies to situations when you absolutely don't want to hear the sounds of the keyboard you are playing but rather the sounds of the keyboard/software you are controlling. So, in my opinion, and in the things I've done so far, I leave local control on - always.
      FYI: There are multiple ways all of this can be setup so with every setup, a different set of configurations may be required and it's quite possible to have an effective setup with local control off too, but that doesn't correlate with how I did the lesson in the video here.

      Hello @Tango Maluco At this point, the setup should be very straightforward.
      1) Plug your Nord Piano 5 into the computer via the USB.
      2) In Logic Pro create a new "Software Instrument" track
      3) Set that track to drums/percussion
      4) You should be able to control the drums from the Nord keyboard using selected keys.
      Alternatively, you can create a new "drummer" track directly in Logic which will create a virtual drummer and get you started with a beat in the track.
      At this point, you may want to check out CZcams for more videos on getting started with Logic and work on your skills that way. You can also take a full "Logic Pro" course on places like LinkedIn Learning or Udemy.com

Do you have headphones/monitor connected to your Audio interface? And with that, you need to have your keyboard connected to the audio interface. You should use the audio interface as the one piece of equipment that provides the sound throughout the entire process. Also, note that your computer has to drive the audio (once it's recorded) back out into the interface too, for you to hear it.

Note that you have to ensure that the Nord has CC Send enabled in the MIDI system settings. Also note that in order to expose the CC#s in Logic, you may have to adjust your track settings to see them. CZcams and Apple Docs can help you in this area of MIDI with Logic as well.

      I think the issue here is that you need to find out how to set up your PreSonus program in a way so that the recorded MIDI track plays to an external instrument (not just the virtual instruments built-in with the PreSonus software). This might be something addressed in the manual or on various videos online perhaps?

    Hi Marc. Is it possible to use this method to take an arpeggiated pattern that is triggered from playing a chord on my keyboard (Korg Kronos) into Logic? I have found that the arpeggiated portion doesn't show up in the piano roll of logic.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      Hello @Jane P Unfortunately, the arpeggiated pattern from just about any keyboard doesn't send each note out via MIDI. Patterns are performed within the keyboard itself and not translated to MIDI. Best to use a plug-in for Logic made for this. You'll still be able to use the Korg to play the notes, but the "arp engine" will be provided directly in Logic. I believe if you use the one in Logic directly, it can be translated to MIDI - but you still might have to find out specific instructions on how to do that as well (with yet another video). This video here will get you introduced to the concept of using an arpeggiator in Logic directly: czcams.com/video/-m92uIVtRvI/video.html

      @McAtorThaPirate, there are several pieces of software that can do this on Windows with their eyes closed. Here is a list for your homework/research:
      *Ableton Live (Paid):* One of the most popular DAWs for both live performances and production. It's well-equipped with advanced MIDI capabilities.
      *FL Studio (Paid):* It is very popular among electronic music producers. It has a unique workflow and a great selection of plugins.
      *Pro Tools (Paid):* This DAW is a standard in many professional recording studios. It is highly effective for recording, editing, and mixing music.
      *Cubase (Paid):* Created by Steinberg, Cubase is a comprehensive DAW that excels in MIDI composition and arranging.
      *Studio One (Paid):* Developed by PreSonus, this DAW has excellent MIDI capabilities, a great workflow, and an intuitive interface.
      *Reaper (Paid):* While not free, Reaper is cheaper than most of the others on this list, but still quite powerful. It also offers a fully-functional uncrippled trial version.
      *Tracktion T7 (Free):* This is a fully-featured DAW that's free to use. It has robust MIDI capabilities.
      *Cakewalk by BandLab (Free):* This is a completely free DAW with features comparable to the paid alternatives. It was once known as SONAR before being acquired by BandLab.
      * Please note that the prices and versions of these DAWs can vary, and it's always a good idea to check their official websites for the most current information.

Then, you can get an iPad app and move the recorded songs over to that (MP3 would be a good format to end up with). For example, you can get this app to trigger a simple pre-recorded MP3 sound: apps.apple.com/us/app/go-button/id454017315?platform=ipad

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      Hello @Michael Dada - hmm - interesting. If you are seeing MIDI signals come in, that is a good sign. Next, try recording the MIDI (even if you don't hear anything). See if the MIDI notes appear on the timeline. If so, that means you are recording MIDI. If you want to hear your keyboard while you play (and it makes sense that you would want this), find out if the audio from the keyboard is also plugged into the Interface and that you are using headphones also plugged into the interface. Even though you are not recording audio at this phase of things, you'll still want to hear "something" while you record the MIDI. If you've managed to record the MIDI but don't hear it play back, it could mean that your MIDI out from that track isn't assigned correctly. Check the MIDI channel and look on your keyboard to see if it's MIDI lights are blinking/activating too. Hopefully, one of these double-checks will get you over the hurdle.

    Great video, good information for Logic users. But, doesn't the Local control on the keyboard have to be set to OFF? I tried this set-up without setting Local control OFF and it had that weird phasing effect. Is there a difference in leaving local control off or on?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem +1

      Hi Jim! Great question! So, after you record your audio track from the MIDI, any time you play the track back, you're going to hear two things:
      1) The audio track you just recorded
      2) The MIDI triggering the keyboard which causes you to hear the audio doubled, thus creating the phase effect because you are hearing both the newly recorded audio track along with the triggered MIDI as you play the track back.
      If you note in the video, at 27:41 (czcams.com/video/V_FGQ83xH0Q/video.html), I perform the final playback, and we hear a "phase" effect. To get over this, I simply mute the MIDI channel from that point forward during playback so that all we hear is the newly recorded audio from the audio track. We are done with the MIDI at that point.
      Local control is simply the concept of halting the physical keys from playing the sounds from the keyboard. You would set Local Control to off when you want to use your board as a controller and where you don't want to hear any of the internal sounds. With local control off, you can still trigger MIDI but not internal sounds. Also, note that incoming MIDI triggers your Nord to play with the local control turned on or off. Local control only has to do with turning off the internal sounds while you play the keys on the Nord.
      Hope that helps clarify things. Let me know if I understand you correctly.

      Sorry for the delay in this response. You can record the "audio" of the drums and rhythm of course directly into the computer and I have a video on that here: czcams.com/video/UU6j5o3YfaA/video.html. But what's interesting about keyboards that produce drums and rhythm accompaniment is that they will not send those out via MIDI but rather just the audio. What you might be able to do instead is capture the audio like normal into your DAW and then use the "convert to MIDI" feature offered by some DAWS whereby you can potentially use the MIDI later on for other things. The challenge there is that there are multiple notes /sounds that make up the rhythm and it may not be interpreted by the DAW accurately. I've never tried this but it's an interesting concept. Now as I say this, some keyboards may in fact enable their rhythm tracks to send the drums out as "standard MIDI" but I'm not really sure. It might be something you can experiment with. Here is a video on how one might go about converting audio to MIDI using Logic Pro. czcams.com/video/JlrLfk4ydcA/video.html. Using this same concept, you might find some interesting results if you attempt to convert the audio accompaniment from your keyboard into MIDI.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      Hello @Pablo Fez. Arrieta Let me clarify things in a step by step way to see if this helps you out. We'll start at the very beginning to be sure we don't miss any steps. We'll start with the Audio part first.
      *Audio Connections*
      1) You'll be connecting the audio out of your Yamaha Piano directly to Mic/Line 1 and Mic/2 of your Twin X. To do this, you are going to be using standard 1/4" TS cables. One for the left channel and one for the right channel. This will preserve the stereo sounds of your keyboard.
      2) Once you do #1 above, you should be able to plug headphones into the front of your Twin X and you should hear your piano. If you don't hear the piano, then you need to likely configure your Audio interface routing options. I have to believe there are videos already online to show you that or you could refer to the Twin X manual. (Most high-end interfaces like this and the Focusrite products allow you to route things in a variety of ways and sometimes they come out of the box configured in a way you don't expect.)
      3) Now you'll connect your Twin X to the computer by way of the USB cable. Here is where you need to perform your first test. Go into your DAW and configure an AUDIO track to record the audio coming in from your Yamaha. Hit record and manually play your Yamaha. Stop recording and play it back in your DAW. You should hear the recorded audio of your Yamaha and your playing. If you can't hear the sounds of your Yamaha on an audio track, you need to stop here and seek help with the people from Twin X.
      *MIDI Connections*
      4) If you get step #3 to work, then you are half way there and you can proceed to this step. Connect the MIDI out from your Yamaha to the MIDI in in your computer using the MIDISPORT UNO. It appears that you already have this working and you already can play your virtual instruments on your computer so this step is likely already completed on your end. See if you can click record, play your Yamaha and then play it back. The DAW will play back your performance but it's likely that you are not hearing your Yamaha - but rather the virtual instrument you assigned in the DAW. This is typical because 99.9% of the people want this setup so this is what happens by default.
      5) Now go into your DAW and see if you can set up a track to use EXTERNAL MIDI. You'll see me do this in the video here: czcams.com/video/V_FGQ83xH0Q/video.html This feature may or may not be supported by the DAW you are using. I assume it will work if you are using Logic Pro, Ableton and any of the other leading DAWs. They might be called something different however and you'll need to refer to your documentation and/or other CZcams videos to find this information out. By selecting an External MIDI option, it will use your Yamaha Directly as the MIDI in AND the MIDI out device (versus playing the sounds from your virtual instruments in the DAW). This is the key to entire setup. Without this, you'll have additional steps. In other words, you want your MIDI track to trigger your Yamaha as the target device to use during MIDI playback. If you can do this, they you're almost there. If you can't do this, stop here and seek more help - you need to get this to work with an External MIDI instrument. Your DAW documentation would be the first place I would go for this.
      *MIDI Playback into Audio*
      6) Record your MIDI performance. Using the MIDI track you set up in Step #5, record your MIDI performance by playing your Yamaha. Be sure that after you are done recording, you can push play in the DAW and you actually hear your Yamaha through the interface and the headphones you set up in step #2
      7) Now that you have an External MIDI track that can trigger your Yamaha directly, you can create a brand new Audio track in your DAW (or use the track you set up in step #3 above). You can confirm that this is working again by repeating step #3 to be sure and to test. So this time you'll set the audio track to record while you push play in your DAW. The MIDI should trigger the Yamaha and your audio track should pick up the audio and record it directly. Yes, your DAW will be playing the MIDI back through the Yamaha while as the same time recording the audio coming in from the Yamaha. (That's the magic part.🦄)
      I believe the most important thing here is step #5. I believe you are hung up on this step. It might require some more research in order for you to set up an EXTERNAL MIDI track in your DAW. For example, GarageBand can't do this and neither can many other DAWs - they are just not designed to work with external instruments in this way (for MIDI playback). However, nearly all the DAWs can record MIDI in and play the built-in virtual instruments on the computer. But this won't help you accomplish what we're doing here in this video and what you hope to do on your end.
      Good luck and report back if you can... 🤞🏻🎹

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      @ I figured this out. First of all, the effect you are hearing is not really volume in the traditional sense but rather MIDI velocity. Your Stage 4 sends out all kinds of information to Logic well beyond just the keys you are pressing. Logic is listening to everything, and the Nord Keyboard is sending everything. Just about any knob or button you push is sending either CC info or other controller info to Logic. The MIDI implementation on the Nord Stage 4 appears to be the most robust Nord has ever offered, so it took me a second to figure this out. "Someone moved my cheese"
      So, if you don't want your velocity info to be sent to Logic by way of your Mod wheel, do the following on your Nord Stage 4:
      - Go under the MIDI Menu in your settings
      - Navigate to page 7 and select "DEV" (these are your MIDI _Device_ settings)
      - Toggle the knob until it reads "off"
      This will prevent the following controller info from being sent to Logic:
      • Pitch Bend
      • Modulation Wheel
      • aftertouch
      • Sustain Pedal
      • Control Pedal
      • Swell Pedal
      • volume (Swell set to volume)
      If you want to apply this option for ALL other CC info beyond what is mentioned above, then you need to also do this:
      - Go under the MIDI Menu in your settings
      - Navigate to page 7 and select "CC" (these are your MIDI _Control Change_ settings)
      - Toggle the knob until it reads "off"
      I'm glad you asked this question because I'll need to make a dedicated lesson in the Pro course for all this. Wow, they've come a long way with the MIDI options.

    Is it possible to keep the left and right hand notes on separate midi tracks?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem +1

      Hi Tom. Great question! Yes so long as your keyboard and/or keyboard controller can create a split and send MIDI out on separate channels with each hand. So it would work something like this:
      1) Split the keyboard (determine a split point that makes sense where your left hand will play only to the left of the split and your right hand only to the right).
      2) Assign the left split to channel 1 (You have options between 1 and 16).
      3) Assign the right split to channel 2 (You have options between 1 and 16).
      4) Set your DAW to "Multi-track Record," assigning one track to MIDI channel 1 (left hand) and one track to MIDI channel 2 (right hand)
      5) Set your DAW to record and start playing.
      Note that not all keyboard/controllers can split into two channels like this. For the Nord Stage 3, for example, you can split the keyboard and use Panel A and assign that to the left on channel 1. Then you can use the "Extern" option and assign that to the right on MIDI channel 2. The more pricy keyboard controllers should also be able to do this.
      Of course, you can go old school and use two keyboards with one on each channel and just play them simultaneously from a two-tier keyboard rack, etc. Both boards would have to be connected to the computer, each with its own cable. Remember that your playback (now that you have tracks assigned to two separate channels) could get interesting if you are hoping to hear both hands coming from a single external sound source/keyboard. But if you want to separate the left from the right, I have to assume that you are doing this so that you have the option to perhaps play different sounds from each hand (like two pianos, one better suited to the left hand and one better suited to the right?). Or perhaps you want to hear a bass guitar-like sample from the left and comping chords from pads on the right or something like that? Very interesting concept you've presented here...

      Hello Robin! @Robin-wo3sm So, while I'm recording the MIDI into Logic, you are hearing the audio out from the keyboard at the same time via the audio interface. When I said I'm recording without audio first, I should have said, "Logic is only accepting and recording the MIDI signals when I play the keyboard. The audio you hear is coming from the keyboard but only through my headphones and only through the audio track for this video (so I can personally hear what I'm doing as a guide)." So, GarageBand was only recording the MIDI signals and ignoring the audio (even though we on the video and me in my headphones) can clearly hear the audio. The audio was merely a reference so that I could perform it.
      Hope that makes sense!

Perhaps there is one setting somewhere making it behave like this (but I couldn't find it). Good luck!

    What if the light of the midi doesnt show? i have everything well connected.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před rokem

      Hello Maria. This is strange. If the MIDI light doesn't show, it has to be something with the basic connections. To help troubleshoot, start at the beginning as simple as possible and test along the way. Keep it simple by just plugging in your keyboard to the computer and bypass any interface you might have. Then, test to see if you can trigger MIDI on your computer. You can also test this in GarageBand first to see if you can get a basic MIDI connection there. Then, once you have that working in GarageBand, you know your wiring is correct. If you still don't see any lights in Logic, then check all your settings in Logic again. Good luck!

    Hi there! I really like your tutorials and using this setup I am trying to do the same in Ableton Live 11, but I am not getting it to work. So I used the exact same connections, so the USB from Nord to laptop and USB-C from Focusrite to laptop. I have my headphones in the Focusrite and the Headphone is configured to DAW 1-2 in the Focusrite Control software. In Ableton I have a MIDI Track with the MIDI From set to Nord Stage and Channel 1. When I now press a key on the Nord I can see the signal gets across, but I dont hear anything through the headphones. I can also record MIDI from the Nord, use an MIDI Instrument in Ableton and send that out to master using an audio track, but then I hear the Ableton instrument and I want to hear the sound from the Nord.
    Can anyone help me out there?
    So I can use an External Instrument in Ableton, but presumably I should not use an External Instrument.

      Hello @kpfl - I wish I had Ableton Live 11 up and running to assist with that but to do so would be a larger effort than I personally have time for. However, have a look at this video (linked below) and double check your basic connections from Ableton out to your MIDI Instruments. Once you solve that puzzle piece, the rest should fall into place. Also, if you think you have the MIDI out working from Albeton back to the Nord keyboard, but you still don't hear anything, try connecting your headphones directly to the Nord temporarily just to see if it's getting any signal. Also, keep an eye on the "MIDI" light on the Nord keyboard. This will tell you immediately if something is coming over the wire to it, even if you don't hear anything. This can help you troubleshoot. Here is the video to check out which may assist? czcams.com/video/2ONL4ZWgy7E/video.html

      @@MyKeysToMusic Thank you so much for your detailed explanation!! I will try this out when I am back home again!! Fingers crossed I will get it to work, because it would be so cool to have the Nord play it’s own instruments using MIDI and not playing software instruments from Ableton. About the lights on the Nord: I indeed got MIDI input on the Nord, so it was receiving the signals sent by Ableton. I will also try the headphones trick. But maybe using an External Instrument plugin is the only way in Ableton? But as you described in your video, that External Instrument should better not be used in logic pro, so I thought maybe the same applies to Ableton. So, I will try it out again when I am back home again in a few days and let you know the results. For me understanding MIDI is not so hard, but understanding how MIDI input on the Nord can play the instruments configuration on the Nord is a mystery to me.

      So there I am again! I only got it to work using the External Instrument in Ableton, so thanks alot for the help and the videos! I was just a bit puzzled, as we should not tick the External Instrument checkbox in Logic, but that put me on the wrong track, but that had nothing to do with Ableton of course 🤗

      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 5 měsíci

      @lebate.j.1368 Lebat, yes, the same concept applies to FL Studio or any professional DAW, really. Of course, the step by step instructions will be completely different for each one, but the same concept applies which is:
      1) Record the MIDI into the DAW.
      2) Play back the MIDI into the keyboard to trigger the sounds from that keyboard.
      3) Record the audio from the keyboard back into the DAW.

    Stupid question incoming: why can't you just record as MIDI and then export it as mp3? Isn't that an audio file?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Před 11 měsíci +1

      @jembartlett Your idea here is spot-on IF the audio came from a virtual instrument supplied by Logic Pro. However, in this example, the audio comes from the external keyboard. Therefore, you can't take advantage of the Logic Pro feature to convert MIDI to an MP3 file. That feature only works if the audio is supplied by a virtual instrument loaded into Logic Pro. Hope that makes sense!

      @@MyKeysToMusic Follow up question if you get some time: is the reason you want to record in this way because the sound of the keyboard is much better than a virtual instrument? Would there not be some terrific virtual piano sounds you could use in Logic that would save you having to run it back via the keyboard? Or the sound quality just doesn't compare? (thanks a lot, as you can tell I'm new to recording!)

      @@jembartlett Great question. The main reason for this video and why I demonstrate it with an external keyboard like the Nord for the audio is primarily because this channel is mainly about Nord Keyboards. But what you say is 100% correct. These days, the sounds from various virtual instruments and plug-ins are as good and, in many cases, even better than sounds from external keyboards (depending on the situation).

      Hey Ronald. I probably wouldn’t bother making any videos if I had to continuously stifle my opinion about some things I find either inspirational or informational. That’s the beauty of CZcams. You can be yourself as they call it. “YOU tube.“
      You may benefit by investing in a paid course for Logic where you can be critical about the presentation and you can also avoid the ads which many believe contain an equal amount if not more of a distraction in the learning process. 👍. I get it!
      As this information is completely free for the taking “you get what you pay for.” Luckily, you have thousands and thousands of choices of people who will teach you about Logic for free on CZcams and they might even do it with no opinion about music, the creative process, what inspires them, artist they like, or any of the human stuff. I’m not that guy. 🤷‍♂️
