Hi Francesca - thank you SO much for this video!!! It's exactly what I needed to set up my space in order to record my piano with midi on ableton.
I used the plugin "The Gentleman" from Native Instruments to use as my sound. The goal is to release a solo piano album on spotify. My question is - do you know if it's worth me sending my songs to a mastering engineer? Since there's only 1 sound (piano) I don't think a significant mixing process is needed. There's a lot of processing already probably on the piano pluggin. What's your advice on steps necessary to make it sound as professional as possible, after recording, so that I can release? thanks!!

Dear Francesca, where in the flow you presented do I ever need the Focusrite? Since you can connect the keyboard straight to the PC, via usb cable, why do you need Focusrite? If you had connected the keyboard to Focusrite via audio cables, then Focusrite to the PC via usb cable (as you do in czcams.com/video/BxkwxzeVrw4/video.html), then I would have understood, but in this setup, Focusrite plays no role. Can't I still use Ableton Live with the keyboard hooked directly to the PC over usb? This is important, because buying Focusrite is an investment, which may be more expensive than buying an Ableton Live license.

You connected the keyboard via usb, therefore midi, to laptop. You then connected Scarlett via usb to laptop too. Scarlet is not in between the keyboad and laptop, as someone would expect. Are you implying that the data goes from keyboard to laptop and from laptop to Scarlett, while Ableton gets it from Scarlet? That is weird! How does this improve the latency? You can use your laptop built-in sound card, or you can use an external sound card as I recommend in the video. Your choice.
Of course, you cannot expect the same output from an external sound card and from the buiilt-in sound card of a laptop, which often, but not always, does not perform at very high levels.

@@francescapittoni6482 Ableton takes the MIDI either from the USB port where you hooked up the keyboard, or from the USB port where you hooked up Scarlett. The MIDI data from your keyboard does not go to computer, then to Scarlett and then back to computer, for Ableton to use it. It does not work this way. Scarlett is good for those keyboards which do not have MIDI connection via USB, and it acts as a bridge between keyboard and computer/Ableton. It takes the analog output from the keyboard and does an analog-to-digital conversion on it by sampling it. Then it feeds the data as MIDI to computer/Ableton. So Scarlett should stay in between keyboard and computer.
In your setup it is not like that, and this made me questioning the role Scarlett plays, if any, if you get my point.
