Such a gorgeous tune. Scarlett's androgynous crooning, Dave Sitek's impeccable production and David Bowie's backing vocals. A thoroughly underrated effort. Hell, even Tom Waits (or his wife, on behalf of him) called Scarlett and told her he loved it.
This is really beautiful. I like the fact it shows her as a regular person, and she's not afraid to show her real feelings instead of just appearing like she has everything together all the time.
I like the fact that it's manufactured to give that illusion and people fall for it.

It's so disheartening to see that some people in the comments dislike this. This is one of my favorite songs and I love her take on it. It's simple and understated, yet holds a lot of meaning and is very unique. You don't have to have a crazy range or powerhouse vocals to be a beautiful singer, and she definitely proves that.

This one makes me weep because I got it back when on release and had troubles in relationships.
I actually do like her interpretation of the song, just wish I'd had never seen the video. This song was playing in a nightmare I'd had last night where I was in a plane that went down in the ocean and me and my family were making the decision to drown in the plane or take our chances with the sharks. Woke up in cold sweats and this song's been stuck in my head all day.

Saw Tom Waits in 1976 at the Tower Theater in Philly. We sat in the front row and I offered him a pull off our bottle of whiskey and he took one, true story. So I am a big fan of his but I kinds like this cover a lot.

honestly- i don't care who she is..i don't really care if she's some star, what she looks like etc.....i don't really watch much tv or movies, but i do listen to all kinds of music, all the time.. she has a sincere emotion in her voice, which is not something you come across much nowadays- i hope she stays with doing music..i would like to hear more from her.

This is actually decent. It's just different from all the perfect, clean pop everybody is used to. I would love to see you qualify this statement. This was not really a great song at all. The tune is generic and the singing is hidden under the tune which is mixed too loudly because they want to hide the fact she can't really sing.

Updating to say I love the song. I hear the comments of people saying she can't sing, the mixing hides her voice and all. I discovered the song in a french tv series. Didn't have a clue it was Scarlett Johansson singing but loved it. (just to say i had no expectations, good or bad). I had no idea that she had any aspirations to sing, and when I heard that someone at Pitchfork had compared her to the Cocteau Twins I thought that had to be a stretch. It's not though, I'm amazed. I'm not a singer and I don't pretend to know what's impressive or not in the vocal world but this is just like their aesthetic and so beautiful. The friend who introduced me to the Cocteau Twins is gone now and I miss him every day. It's amazing to hear someone putting out music in that same vein.
This is different. I can say that much. I like it though.
Plenty of actors and actresses have musical talents and some even got into acting through their music. I am curious to know what people honestly expected out of Scarlett's singing? Her sound is alternative and eerie, but it sounds like Scarlett to me. I'd hate to hear a "drone"ish or streamlined singer out of her, the last thing we need is a carbon copy of some other artist you'd probably hate anyways.
I guess what i'm getting at is, if her sound or style could transform to something the general public would find pleasing, people would s**t on it anyways.

I hear what you're saying. You either hate or love her sound.. her singing actually reminds me of Johnette from Concrete Blonde. I could actually see Scarlett doing the songs Joey or Caroline rather effortlessly.
As for my favourite, 'Boys Don't Cry' is rather stunning and more alternative. Kind of like 'Last Goodbye', it's nothing like the original, but she succeeds in making it her own.
Acting is a form of expressing. And so is singing. So lets just appreciate her form of expression shall we?
