Melanie Sloan, Scarlett's mother, was indeed a producer. She co-produced "A Love Song for Bobby Long," in 2004 -- well after Scarlett had established her acting credentials. She did support Scarlett in some previous films. That's what a good parent does -- support their child's passion.

Fortunately, we had Dave on CBS to keep us going. Many people are commenting on how poised, confident, and comfortable she seems at 13. I don't think it's a coincidence that she grew up in a large family with 3 siblings (including 2 brothers). Siblings help to socialize you because 1) they have their own priorities and won't always (or ever) treat you like a precious little prince/princess, and 2) even when you have a fight, you can't just cut them off; you have to learn to live with each other. These are valuable life lessons that too many kids these days don't receive because they're the only child in the family, and surrounded by helicopter parents, as well as an over-zealous safety culture.
