Thanks so much for everyones kind words. This update really stinks to say the least but I hope you all recognize how much humble transparency matters to me on this channel. I want you all to follow along and be able to see that not everything is happy when it comes to keeping animals. Today a very hard lesson was learned but it was LEARNED. That mistake won't be made twice. The injured skinks vet visit was today. Dr. Brown said that he looks okay. I have to apply silvasorb gel to the tail and toe for the next little while but he thinks he will make a full recovery and hopefully even regrow his tail! Unfortunately he did mention the animal will likely loose his injured toe (I suspected that). THANK YOU to my Reptiliatus Patrons for helping me get my skink to the vet! Your contributions helped pay for this vet visit. For more information on how to support this channel checkout:
Your sense of accountability and honesty is refreshing and incredible. There are unfortunately always risks, always new things to learn, and always the occasional fluke as well. It truly is disappointing that this happened..but try not to beat yourself up. You provide phenomenal care to your animals, and go above and beyond for them. Even then, you aren't perfect, and things sometimes just happen. There are always variables.
I highly respect the transparency that you have with your audience, it shows a lot of maturity, you give our hobby a good rap, which is also something I really appreciate especially considering how misunderstood a lot of these animals are
Thanks for sharing this with us, and making yourself vulnerable to us with your transparency. You take excellent care of your animals, and though mistakes are inevitable, you go to great lengths to make sure they are well cared for.
Oh I'm so sorry that happened.. I can't imagine how you must be feeling to go through such an experience! No one should have to go through that, sorry buddy.. On the flip side.. This is the first time I've seen one of your setup videos from start to finish like this, and I gotta say, you have some next level genius ideas!! Using the kitty litter and substrate as a building material?? Genius. Your setups are always so lovely. I hope your day goes well, and that your injured skink heals up well, and that Mr. Murder chills out..
R.i.p girl. So sad to see her gone and the male injured. I'm glad you noticed and separated them. The fact you didn't hide it or try and blame the reptile is really cool of you. Taking accountability is hard when it has to do with a passing of an animal but i truly thank you for showing us what happened and how to fix it. People need to normalize that even experienced keepers can accidentally make mistakes and the reptile hobby is a continuous learning experience.
I acquired a probable 1.2 trio of Striped Basilisks (Basiliscus Vittatus) a few months ago. As time went on I had my doubts about one of the basilisks being female and turns out he is in fact male as I had predicted, the dominant male being present within the same vivarium suppressed development in the other male. I was in the process of getting a separate vivarium prepared and I came home one afternoon to see a few inches of the newly determined male basilisks tail in the mouth of the dominant male. Lesson learnt, don’t always trust what people tell you and I certainly will be more picky with animals I acquire in future to avoid mistakes like this from occurring again. Fortunately the remainder of the tail has healed up quite nicely and so far no signs of infection are present which I’m very pleased to see and he seems far happier now that he is in his own vivarium!
- Yes! Thank you for sharing this very real experience of housing animals. I'm positive that nobody doubts your husbandry, or decision making, when it comes to your beloved pets. Their demeanor and healthiness is very evident every time I see them, so I know you're doing right by them. Grateful that you bring us along on this journey with you, and wish you the best with your endeavors. Keep your head up , sir. My sincerest condolences.
💕 Your compassion and the way you took responsibility/ immediately taking action is such a good thing to share. It’s important to admit mistakes and spread awareness. 💕
Thank you for sharing your experience for others to learn from. It hurts when you lose an animal, but you did what you could by giving them the best chance in being in captivity. The killer croc might of had a challenge adapting to being out of the wild (assuming they were a wild-caught as most crocodile skinks tend to be) causing the territorial aggression.
We’re always learning, we’re not infallible, we don’t know everything, unlike my teenager who thinks he does. This is the real scare of keeping. And every animal is different! And you could have 50 pairs or 2:1 all doing well, but you just never know. So Sorry for your loss Dayyan 😢 though I appreciate your transparency so the rest of us can learn.
So sad, I'm sorry about the whole crocodile skink situation. We live, we learn. Don't hate on yourself too much, you weren't aware of the situation you created until it happened. Love your channel! Keep up the great content!
Very much appreciate the transparency! You do great work. Very helpful, very realistic, and it’s also very transparent that you love your animals!
Awww buddy....I'm sorry, that whole experience sucks...don't be too hard on urself!! You are and AMAZING care giver for all ur critters and we all know how diligent you are in everything you do....your love for what you do ALWAYS shows...I know I speak for everyone on this.. take care and as always thanks for the video and sharing with us. ❤😘🤗👍🦖😉🐸🐊🦎🐢🐠🦧🦋🐒🐉🐟❤
I’m still in the beginning stages of reptile keeping but something I feel super guilty about is feeding my first female gargoyle gecko with cheap tongs. She goes CRAZY for worms and roachies and would usually bite the tongs and one day I noticed she had a wound on her lip from biting the tongs and I felt, and still feel, soooo bad. She’s my baby! But Dayyan, you’ve been doing this for soooo long, and we can all see that you’re always doing your absolute best for your animals, you clearly care SO much so I hope you’re not being too hard on yourself about it. I know it’s obviously hard to move on from the guilt because when it’s your pet, they’re 100% your responsibility, but things can’t always be perfect and not all mistakes can be prevented. We really really appreciate you sharing this so we can learn too, thank you for being amazing 💚
Always appreciate how forthcoming you are when accidents happen; it certainly is a hard thing to deal with it.
Im a brand new subscriber, and I love your transparency! Im still extremely new to the hobby (corn snake since late December and gargoyle gecko since mid February) and most of the videos/blogs ive checked up on are always very confident in everything they say, as if their one size fits all rather than showing mistakes that they make and reminding newcomers that each animal has their own personality
One week ago one of my pair tribolonotus novaeguineae past away. I bought them at a reptile expo 3 weeks ago. They had not told me about worming. “Because of the stress the worms and flagellates could cause a problem” is what they told me afterwords. Always worm red eyed crocodile skinks before putting them into the “real” enclosure. Lessen learned! Btw they die an unbelievably long and stressful death with convulsions and screaming (indescribable painful sound to hear).
I think I contacted the person you got this skin from as well. The story you say he told sounds the same. I passed because while I've been wanting a red eye for over a year now, he didn't seem... 100%
Thanks for sharing this and I'm sorry for the loss. It's clear that you care deeply for each of your animals and it takes a lot of courage to talk about it. The best for the hobby is to share both successes and losses so that your viewers have the opportunity to learn. I admire you and your channel more for posting this video. And I would totally love a green tree monitor but will never get one - so I enjoy seeing yours.
