One Light Rim Light | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

- There are many ways to create rim-lit portraits or product shots and most of them involve the use of multiple lights or flashes. But there is a way to achieve the perfect rim-lit portrait with just one flash and one medium to a large-sized softbox.
As Gavin Hoey demonstrates, a single small flash placed behind your subject will create unflattering rim light. And in a small home studio that light will bounce off the walls and back onto your subject. But a large light source, such as a softbox, creates wrap-around light that is a lot more controllable.
Gavin shows how a low-tech, DIY black background placed against a softbox creates amazing rim light from just one light. But he doesn’t stop there. Next, he adds a colored gel and later some smoke to elevate the look even further.
Finally, Gavin takes you into Photoshop and creates a split-toned gel look with just a few clicks of the mouse.

12 hours... sure but not all in one go, right 😉
@@GavinHoey i did it already once 👍
This is incredible! 👏
Absolutely agreed 👍🏼
That why I sleep late, can stop watching 🤣
This guy is amazing. Love lighting tutorials!
Fantastic technique, I'd never think to part block the softbox the way you did to maintain the black background. Good to see your smoke machine is back ☺️
A Gavin Hoey video without smoke isn't a video at all! 😀
Finally, my desired lesson has been attended effectively... love from Tanzania❤❤❤
Do you have any idea why my outcome shows flare and low contrast images? I believe everything I've tried is the same as Gavin's set-up.
Honestly Gavin you’re my favorite teacher!!! Men I didn’t see that creative color coming. Wow! Respect
awesome
I'm proud with my Olympus when i watch the video 😉 !
Absolutely Brilliant.
So beautiful!
We just can not get enough of Gavibs creative and effective ideas! Thanks!
Great video, technique, model, and narrative. Thank you.
The most genius idea ever!
You can realize the gradient color-effect already in-camera using the non-colored flashlight and cover the left-side of the rim-light area with a red sheet of color-gel and the right-side with a blue-colored sheet of gel (I use sheets Lee Filters). I did not try this but I'm convinced that this will work. And still with ONE lightsource. I like your approach of DIY. Sorry for my crooked English, I'm Dutch.

After watching his video I looked into my photo store room and found all these items (including smoke machine) and did not realise I had the combination of items to do the same shoot. Met Gavin at the NEC photography show a few years back and have always admired his way to show in simple terms.
