Using a Softbox as Rim Lights to create an Eye Catching Image

- In today’s Photo Deconstruction I break down how to create an iconic looking image using 2 lights and a softbox in an unusual way.
For this shoot my goal was to create something graphic, iconic and colorful. I love experimenting in the studio and found this technique to be something I try time and time again.
This image was created with only 2 strobes which at first glance can be a little confusing! One might guess 3, or even 4 lights.
To give the illusion of extra rim lights I'm using a softbox which when positioned close to the subject creates the bits of color that wrap around the subject.
The trick here is really using the flag in between the softbox and the model. Without the flag, you’d have a lot of light splashing back into the camera and a completely different look.
You could totally just stop here and have the model in silhouette, but for me, I wanted to play around a bit with complimentary colors and add a gel to the main light.
For post processing I had to make some adjustments, even though straight out of camera was very close to the end results.
Since we’re shooting directly into the softbox there is going to be some lens flare and we lose a little bit of contrast. So to fix this, I just increased the contrast in camera raw, upped the clarity a bit and darkened down the shadows. I also adjusted the color grade after playing around a bit. Beyond that, I just extended the frame and cleaned up the edges of the hair a bit, which takes us to the final shot.
Using this technique is great if you only have two lights, and heck you don't even need a backdrop so it's great for smaller spaces too!
👇 Let me know in the comments below if you’ve ever tried this technique and what you think of the outcome.

very cool! I used this lighting set up with a red tulip in front of a soft box with a black mat board blocking out the middle 2/3rds of the soft box to give the tulip a beautiful glow
Love it! We did similar setup on Peter Bielack workshops.

❤️❤️❤️✨✨✨Gorgeous
Beautiful Lindsay😍
Thank you, great idea))
What a proud photograph proudly carrying the Lindsay Adler signature. First time listening/watching the video, I visually missed the BTS section around 1:03 and paused and kept looking at 4:03. An old experienced man in a state of confusion, how did she do that - light seems to come from above, below and left and right, plus it is a bit hard in the contours. Then I went back to the beginning and there it was - of course - Howie did it.
You're so good ma'am 😭
So good! When adding your gels to the soft box, does 1 gel give you that much intensity? Or are you layering? Just curious!
Wow, this is so amazing, I'm speechless! I'm about to buy my first studio lens, trying to decide between 24-70 2.8 or the RF 24-105, would you recommend either of them?
Thanks!
Hello Lindsay, I have tried this today in a shoot with my friends and results were stunning ! I will post on IG and tag you in them! Thank you very much this was very useful!
Glad to hear that it came out great! :)
🥰🥰😍😍❤️❤️ beautiful
Lindsay Awesome.
Great Video, I’ve also seen this setup and effect done by Gavin Hooey on Adorama Tv recently. Maximum impact and pop with a relatively simple setup.
I've been doing it for years. :)
Great video
Thank you so much!
Sometime I have to watch you w no sound and I still feel like I can follow along. Not sure if you have an interest ever considered it but you would make a dope professor I think
Well I mean I do teach lol. :D
@@lindsayadlerphoto facts. You're world class
I have a question: Do you use a color checker (x-rite) when you put a color gel on your main light?
Not really unless I have to get accurate colors for a brand/commercial work. I generally tweak the colors (like I did here) anyway.
When you add gels to softboxes are the gels the same size as the box or are you using regular sized gels?
Definitely not the same size as the box. They don't need to be. They are just a size large enough to fit over the light.
How to use Gel on the lamp with softbox?
The gel is over the light in the softbox.
@@lindsayadlerphoto but there is hot light? Is it not burn on the Light?
I mean, it's not exactly touching the light, so the risk is minimal.
this is a add
Uh, no it isn't. But thanks for commenting.
also its ad not add. lol
