Rim Lighting For Portraits: Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

    If you're looking for a dramatic, low key portrait idea then Gavin Hoey has you covered with this amazing rim light tutorial. Starting with two bare flashes, Gavin walks you through how to improve the photo by softening the light with a stripbox .

      Gonna go out on a limb here and say that if you believed he made mistakes then he really did a great job in the video. The Gavster knew what the outcome was for each setup and manufactured the "mistakes" to demonstrate the problem solving process for us viewers. It's a technique used to help us learn, and he's darn good at it too.

    Thanks Gavin. That tip on covering half a regular softbox to get a striplight was gold. Can't believe I hadn't thought of it before. Those shots would look great in B&W as well.

      Thanks Tim. It's an oldie tip but a goodie! The original plan was to go B&W but when I added the bubbles, they're was just enough colour to make it worth keeping.

Also important > the photoshop trick of > +layer-Blending-mode-from normal to-screen = Seriously Useful.....
