Woah woah woah. "Should be the pinnacle of Sim racing." F1 is a good game, but not a Sim. There are other Sims out there that bring in way more participants and consistency. The problem with the f1 games is they release a new one every year, which in my opinion, was the downfall for CODs pro scene. It's a casual game for casual users. Max doesn't hop on the F1 game. He hops on something entirely different.

It feels like post covid, the hype of simracing and esports has fallen. At Autosport Intl a lot of brand representatives were telling me they had lost interest in simracing - it didn't make financial sense, didn't bring in viewers and once simracers have a rig...they don't really need to buy another and don't all want to spend £1000s on mega rigs.

if done properly, this whole series could have continued growing easily. online content is so easy to view, you can use so many channels to interact with your audience. the brands behind the scenese could market accordingly. Covid would have been considered an accelerator to a success, but now it’s obviously a different situation with the image loss they all took.
I am sure they actually missed a massive opportunity there.

  • @riquelmeone

it’s crazy to think that there are no commercially minded people clever enough to make this whole thing a success. I mean, the previous years saw a gradual improvement on the content, drivers brought their own audience from streaming platforms, the formula 1 brand is there. Is that not a great foundation to make the next step? The idea of F1 esports world championships should be enough already to have someone sort it out properly.
I think that the travel cost is just a scapegoat excuse. There must be more going on behind the scenes.
Crazy to think that in this digital age they cannot market a digital product. I for one would have been a loyal viewer.

    IMO here are the possibilities.
F1 Esport will need to be its own entity. Governing itself controlling budgets for each team with a budget cap. It will provide the facilities to support all the teams during a race. This entity will have its own sponsors, as well as individual teams having their own sponsors. The equipment should be standardized based upon the contractual agreement between F1 Esport and F1. The big question is which F1 entity should have the responsibility of managing that contract between itself and F1 Esports.
It can be "The Formula One Group" which manages the F1 constructors championship, or it can be " The Formula 1 Teams" which manages the funding for the team commercially. Now thinking about this maybe the issue at the moment with moving forward. Well let's see what happens and I hope this gets cleared up soon because there's a demand and we all miss it, that includes the Esports drivers and teams.

Because that a huge amount of money.
You dont do stuff when the cost to start is higher than anything you get out of.
Suddenly requiring everyone to be on sight, but not willing to pay for that to happen is exactly how you drive out teams and drivers involved.
This is quite literally a "Cut your losses, close the series" move. They do not see the value in financing it, losing money on it. Half a million clicks does not put lights on - or let them stay on.
But instead of just closing shop they have a last attempt of money grabbing with new contracts in place and an already positioned scapegoat (drivers unwilling to "take one for the team").
Im almost certain this kinda bullshittery is required so that everyone on the board can get their severance and can claim "We tried but due to unforseen complications...."
    6:37
They dont need that CZcamsr, they rather have nobody talk about it, do not start a conversation, let contracts run out, severance pay to be made and move on.
Ive seen stuff like this in the business world all the time, everything from start to finish was purposefully done to stop that thing altogether, but without having to say publicly that they dont care enough to hammer money for it (i can not see how any of this is or was profitable whatsoever). Which is, from a business perspective, entirely normal and understandable (hopefully for everyone) but coorperations just cant help themselves to be the worst communicators out there (although, again, sometimes on purpose)

3:02 the actual correct capitalization is actually... "esports" (lol). "Esports" can also be used in certain situations, but "eSports" should never be used nowadays.
Anyway, nice summary, and nice short video. I will agree that this was absolute shambles, and unfortunately, I can't really see the way out, especially on F1 23 game; I think we are way too late into game cycle for that.
I think the best case scenario would be to sell the F1 esports rights to some company as you mentioned (like EA themselves) so that they could actually organize it, but, considering how much does FOM regulate the F1 games already, I don't think that's possible...
So, I think that if Formula 1 doesn't eventually reach an agreement until Autumn, the official F1 esports series is as good as dead and we're back to square 2, with PSGL/WOR/other premier leagues doing their own things.

The F1 game was not meant for esports, it has simcade physics besides it was made for a more casual gaming side. Still, why does the organization don't use actual esports teams instead of real ones? It would be fun to see 26 racers on track and the brands choosing if they would want to see them in the competition or not. It would still be fun to see an F2 series featuring new players into the esports series though.
Another thing is the realism, why not using VR and cockpit camera instead of the tv pod camera? Besides, they use direct drive wheels, I don't know why they didn't implement this.

Matches my IRL experience with the FIA as a marshal...
They are a complete sh*tshow. Ive NEVER seen any other event being this incredibly reckless and badly organised. We had no firemarshal the first half day and after that I was radio AND fire marshal... Try operating the radio with those 3 layer gloves, its a joke.
Had somebody come to our (2 marshal post, by regulation every post has at least 3 marshals or the event wont start) we could have done either nothing or grilled ourself on the electronics. Great choice!
And yes, they knew about it. I radioed in several times and in the morning the safety car inspects the track and ALL marshals. They obviously deemed it "good enough".
There was way more stuff going wrong, but I think this takes the cake.

Demand isn't measured in pure viewing numbers, it is measured in how much he viewer will spend. 700,000 views alone isn't going to generate a lot of revenue. There are CZcamsrs with one camera filming themselves critiquing films getting more views, and they aren't sitting on fortunes that could cover the cost of these in-person event, let alone prize money.

Imo F1 aren’t taking it serious because they don’t take the racing serious, and I kinda agree, I personally don’t take it serious because the drivers all use the t cam, which when compared to cockpit like I racing, it’s just not the same thing, it’s way easier and doesn’t use much real race craft to take seriously
Imo they need to mandate cockpit cam for all participants, then real race fans and drivers can take it somewhat seriously, and when that happens, f1 will see the drivers like it and will start taking it more seriously

    I'd rather watch Formula-E.
EA's F1 is ... moderately stable and modern but it's way too arcade to make it interesting as an esport. Also fuck EA for removing every old F1 version from Codemasters in stores.
Switching to something like iRacing is impossible because on the visual side it's 20 years behind and on a technical level it's a bigger mess than Windows ME. Why do people even pay that subscribtion to drive around a car that moves every 2seconds in the netcode.
The only reason people watched F1 esports is because during covid actual F1 drivers did it. And in the end we were disappointed anyway after a half hour delay for the races to start and the game dropping all drivers within a few laps of actual racing.

As far as I know, there is neither an anti-cheat in F1 nor were people really punished who were caught cheating. I don't remember exactly what the guy's name is, but in his stream you could clearly see that he was using cheats and he then said on Twitter that EA had asked him to test something during the qualification xD From that point on the series was completely dead for me.
