  • What started out as a bad day quickly repaired itself with a visit from Charlie...
    Today is SHEARING DAY!
    My favourite day.
    But there is one thing I've been struggling with.
    That my wool is worth NOTHING.
    A beautiful, renewable fibre that isn't being used?
    I just don't get it...
    So I am going WAY outside my skill set to try to do my part in supporting our wool supply in Canada.
    Please don't laugh. LOL

    I'm a die hard knitter, but before I realized knitting wasn't hard and I could learn it via CZcams tutorials, I was a felter. Needle felting, specifically. My husband and I have been married for 9 years now, but we met online, and my in laws were AMAZING and welcomed me into their home with open arms and open hearts when I made the move from Texas here to Nevada. One of the first things my mother in law and I bonded over was felting; she'd seen a little needle felted animal online and didn't know that's what it was, and when I was like "oh that's needle felting, and it's not as difficult as you think it is", she wanted to learn, so I taught her. Even when she got really, really sick, she continued to make her little critters and figures. That's how she passed the time when she was spending 7 to 9 hours a day, 4 days a week getting dialysis, and she accidentally started a little "felting circle" at her dialysis center, I had POUNDS of undyed raw roving that I basically supplied for them to use. Young and old, men and women, even some of the staff picked it up. She passed 3 years ago, and every time I look at those little needle felted figures she made, it brings back special memories. Pardon the long story, I just felt like I needed to share.
    Also, I'd LOVE some yarn from your sheep, it breaks my heart that all this wool and fleece is just going to waste because of the economics. Wool is SUCH a great fiber, and so very versatile, and I wish the general public understood that; maybe then there would be more demand.

    My heart was breaking watching Sandi close to tears over the little lamb. 😢 No one better EVER say anything about Sandi not treating her sheep well! I was raised on a farm and all my friends parents were farmers and I have never seen a farmer in the 50 years I have been on this earth treat animals with so much compassion and love! This woman is a saint among us and I don't see how she doesn't see what a stellar person she is. Dedicated, hard working, compassionate and loving, and that just begins to describe Sandi Brock. 💕🐑🐑🐑🐑

      I know this old but I reply to this because the words you used touch my heart I agree Sandi is a Saint and really loving and caring about her sheep and the babies. Just touches my heart she does and when there sheep losing lambs puts tears in my eyes. I really feel for Sandie when I see her videos and how upset she gets. I also watch her trying to safe the lambs but sometimes they give up breathing but most of pull through and she tries and reunight them to there mum. So Sandi is most Harding working farmer I watch. So love your comment, no I am not a farmer but I love animals and so does my children who are adults and married and have animals for there children.

      There's stubbornness and then there's animal distress. That poor lamb is living a constant nightmare or terror. She's been going through this too long. A prey-herd animal's worse stress comes from feeling helpless. Being stuck like this can't go on.

    • @mimidavis2686
      @mimidavis2686 Před rokem +1

      @@gregedmand9939 There’s also not giving up without a fight! The young sheep had Polioencephalomalacia or a form of polio with is treatable in most cases with thiamine for 1 to two days. Most sheep do recover but there are more severe cases that can last longer and sometimes no matter what treatments are done, the sheep doesn’t recover. Sandi was trying to save this little sheep and not just give up and euthanize it without trying. I had to watch previous video to remind me of the situation. She wasn’t trying to torture her and wanted to give her every possible chance to recover. It’s so easy to condemn someone sitting behind a screen, typing on a keyboard. It’s quite another to actually BE on a farm, taking are of animals and having to make those hard decisions. We farmers don’t want to lose any of our animals, we do everything in our power to protect and preserve their quality of life but sometimes, no matter what you do, it isn’t enough. You only see a few minutes of Sandi treating this sheep, you have no idea of what all she did for her when her camera wasn’t on. She made the ultimate decision to do the last act of kindness but it wasn’t without her feeling sadness, regret and remorse for not saving this sheep. Would you want your Doctor to give up as easily and quickly as you wanted Sandi to do for this sheep or would you want them to do everything possible before they let you die?

    • @gregedmand9939
      @gregedmand9939 Před rokem

      @@mimidavis2686 I wasn't critical of Sandi's treatment at all, just supporting her final hard decision. I know how hard it is to act on the ultimate behalf of animals you have emotional attachments to. It's just as difficult when your lively hood depends on them. Seeing them in terror is as heart wrenching as seeing them in pain. My experience crosses race horse training and many family pets. I've been binging my way through her videos and watching how hard she fights for them is most impressive.

      Just so you know, sheep polio is not the same disease as human polio. The alternate name for this is cerebrospinal necrosis and is caused by the inability to process thiamine (a nutrient critical to the development of the central nervous system). IDK if that makes much of a difference in terms of the animals suffering, but I'm sure Sandi did right by the lamb.
      I'm sorry you had polio, but at least there are vaccinations for humans to prevent that disease and its almost eradicated as a result. GB and take care!

    Hi Sandy! I"m a knitter here and felting is fun. :D
    First off, the yarn you have comes in a hank or you can also call it a skein (skane pronunciation). To felt you have to have 100% wool (untreated and "natural" wool not anything that's superwashed). Any synthetic fiber will not felt. If you don't like the shape of it, make your layers smaller so that they're less noticable. If you have spots that aren't felting so well, you can use a little bit of hand soap and water and rub the areas that you want tighter.
    If you want your ornaments lighter then work them around a ping pong ball so there's a hollow center.
    I love your crafting ideas. Thanks!

    Congratulations on making your dryerballs!
    I've been making them for years from my sheep's wool...honestly the sales of them has greatly supplemented my "sheep habit".
    A top load washing machine with an agitator works best. Another tip, use a kitchen scale to weigh your roving so all the DBalls are of a consistent size.
    Use a good felting wool, usually the higher the micron the less it will felt.
    Another tip, when selecting replacement rams always look for a finer wool ram (very small crimpy wool) you will see a big difference in his lambs.
    So maybe you'll have a good market lamb with really good wool too.
    Enjoy, have fun...there is so much you can do with wool.

    I have watched many people shear over the years but I have never seen someone so ambidextrous with electro-mechanical shears before. Charlie handles those clippers really well.
    For folks that have never sheared a sheep the principle secret is to know how to handle the sheeps body so that the skin is smooth and taught without wrestling the sheep. The issue of handling the sheep becomes much more difficult the bigger (and smaller) the sheep are. Big sheep struggle and small sheep squirm something awful and you have to bend further more of the time!

      @@SandiBrock Just a suggestion Sandi but maybe u could make smaller balls and put a little sachet of potpourri in them to hang in closets, put in drawers and for air fresheners for your car. If they were half the size of the balls u r making now and u used the roving that would be adorable. Or maybe instead of potpourri people could put drops of scented oil on them. Maybe u could try some scented oils on a few and use them yourself and see if it works. I have been crafting my whole life. I was raised in a family of women who were frugal and loved to handmade presents so I consider myself lucky that I was taught those skills. But n e one can learn how even u Sandi. U r amazing. How I love your adventures in wool. I am 72 now, but somehow in my ancient memories, I remember my grandmother undoing a hank of yarn, slinging it carefully between2 chair backs and winding it into balls so my great grandmother could knit school sweaters for all the great grand kids. Being the oldest, sometimes I was recruited to help hold the yarn. Memories ❤

    Here is a fix for your washer leaking in the front... the door seal, at the bottom there is a lip on the outside of the inner lip.... where the darkest stain is. There are 3 holes there, clean those out and your washer won't leak anymore.

      I have the same washer as she does and mine leaks in front also at times. I clean mine constantly and it still leaks. I also wash the seal around to get the mold and mildew off. There is a filter on the left side of the washer that gets cleaned out constantly also since one of my dogs shed.

    I noticed your washer had stuff growing on the rubber ring that seals the door. My family had the same thing for a long time. We figured out if you run a cycle with quite a bit of bleach it will kill it (you might have to wipe it afterward). Then if you always leave your washer door open after you wash so air can flow in it will dry out and not grow stuff anymore. :) (not that you have to do this, just wanted to share in case you were looking for a way to get rid of it) :)
