A little DRAMA with these MAMAS. Vlog 400

  • Ok, so maybe more like Drama Mamas...
    As we approach the end of lambing, these mamas need to be watched like a hawk.
    Lambs are getting big, and the physics surrounding delivery of said lambs gets a bit more complicated...
    Over these three days, I had a ewe pinch a nerve as lambing took too long.
    I had a lamb stuck, so its head swelled like crazy... but I got there just in time.
    And a few others, that well, required some assistance.
    Also weighed some market lambs...
    I have to say, the lamb market in Ontario right now is amazing.
    But left me with more questions, than answers.

    Yes, of course I saw Kinsey and wondered what she was trying to tell you. However, this is more important today. Can I just say what an amazing girl, young lady, all around Jill-of-All you have. If my dad would have had the patience to teach me right alongside, I would have an amazing skillset for a woman my age. I would have had the confidence I lacked at her age. I had to learn the hard way which end of a screwdriver got the job done and that a hammer will not do the job of a screwdriver. I hope she never stops learning and trying new things. Surely miss the family farm. Used to not let the herd drink water the day before shipping and that caused them to withhold poop if I can say that? Anyway disagree with the wise man thing. The ewe with the big lump it looks like a hematoma or a large abscess. Stick a large gage needle in and see if u get blood or Puss. If puss it may be hard to get anything out if at all but if u get nothing, it will need to be lanced and drained. If u get blood, usually they heal themselves without intervention.

      I adore seeing them playing! 😸💞
      Hopefully they'll work off some extra energy as well!

      I think that it comes from trauma to her from birthing, whatever trauma it might be to mess with her ability to think clearly.

      I'm afraid it is even worse when sows farrow- losses by overlying are quite often approaching 10% and the dreadful thing is the bigger the litter the worse the problem because big litters generally mean low individual piglet birth weight and temporarily low energy levels in the piglets until they suckle, grossly over fatigued sows with the birthing process, etc.
      Most sows rarely have more than 12 functioning teats and natural survival says the strongest get the most milk and the weakest least = higher mortality in really big litters. Fortunately piglets are relatively easy to foster so it is easy to move some from one litter to a sow with fewer piglets of her own with a pretty good chance of acceptance providing they are of similar age.

    • @MobyDicksWife
      @MobyDicksWife Před 3 lety +1

      @@w056007568 Wow, interesting. So is that the reason for farrowing crates?

    • @w056007568
      @w056007568 Před 3 lety +2

      @@MobyDicksWife Yes it is one of the biggest reasons in addition it can protect the herdsman in some cases from a savage bite from the sow providing they don't offer the sow some tasty morsel to chew on!
      They also restrict her movement to some extent to slow her body falling to the floor and squashing piglets. In addition They provide a safe area to the piglets close to the sow so if necessary heat lamps or heat pads can be placed for the piglets to lie on out of danger from the sow lying on them.
      When sows are kept outdoors commercially individually sows close to farrowing are provided with individual housing and copious straw bedding. Commonly these are low corrugated steel huts (A bit like a tunnel shape) with one end closed in and the other end similarly so except for an access doorway to one side for the sow to go in and out to drink and feed outdoors. In most circumstances sows will chew up the straw and form something like a huge oval birds nest shape depression into which she will farrow her piglets.

I definitely need that, specially I’m by myself most of the time, well I’m with my daughter and husband, when he’s home from work and my teen is home from school and they’re both undelegating in nature so I have to find an extra boost of motivation and encouragement from somewhere else, so appreciate your sharing.

      Oh man I used to do a month long "schedule" that was more important for the first 21 days of a new flock from day 1 to age of vaccination, then my visits were weekly thereafter and not as important since the birds were much older.
      Anyway, having at least 4wks of a schedule in my face made my life easier to see since it was age based. You could totally do that per lambing group...err well something similar anyway.
      I like seeing that hay feeder for the lamb lounge! Do they like it?
      I'd swap those creep feeders to be the long way. That way from the door you'll be able to see if someone is stuck and not after you've been doing chores then notice the derp who got stuck!
      You seem more rested Sandi! Thanks for posting for us 😊
