LGBT issues of faith - musical performance and talk | Jennifer Knapp | TEDxUniversityofNevada

  • What more can be said about LGBT issues? In this musical performance and talk, Jennifer Knapp acknowledges LGBT issues have come a long way, but coming out is still a social struggle, especially for Christians or people of other faiths.
    Jennifer Knapp was at the height of her career when she did what most would consider unthinkable: she took a seven-year hiatus, looking to reclaim a part of herself that felt lost in her success. But that period of soul-searching made her songwriting more honest than ever. After her highly anticipated return Letting Go, she has solidified a loyal fan base through remarkably accessible songwriting that bridges across genres. Her transition from Contemporary Christian Music to mainstream folk rock has made her a lightning rod for controversy, but her unique ability to speak gracefully to music lovers from all walks of life fills a void in the unlikely intersection between the faith and LGBT communities. Today we find Jennifer experiencing a personal renaissance with a much broader platform than ever before: recording a new album entitle Set Me Free, becoming one of the foremost advocates for LGBT people of faith, and releasing a memoir Facing the Music: My Story on Howard Books/Simon and Schuster.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    I listened to her music as a teenager struggling to reconcile my feelings with a religious upbringing that told me to hate myself. when Jennifer Knapp came out, as a lesbian Christian, I had hoped, for the first time, that my parents might not hate me if I told them who I really am.

I even met you one time when you were on tour with Jars of Clay, I had front row seats to your concert :) When it came out in the media that you were gay, I didn't know what all the fuss was about, to me it didn't matter. I like you as a person, as a song writer, as a singer, as a child of God!! Jesus told us to love one another and that to me means everybody! It really saddens me when people who follow Jesus can have such hate toward certain people and think that it is ok. Thank you for spreading the message of love for all

      HamsterSlime007 You better get a couple of senses yourself before you judge others. I know Jennifer Knapp very well since I was a Christian in the past, and I would support her as a Christian, just as I support her today as a non-theist. Your opinion "stay strong and get over your gay problem" is the evidence of insensitivity. I'm not "displeased" by opposite opinion, in this case I'm rather disgusted by the very idea that some of us would think they have any business in other people's bedroom, or how they make sense of their lives and how they pursue happiness in love.

      Actually, we, as Christians, are not to judge unbelievers, but the word is clear that we in the church are to hold each other to a higher level of accountability. If I see my brother sinning I am commanded to go to them and confront that sin, and if they will not repent, the church is supposed to enact discipline.
      But browbeating and degrading anyone in public for any sin never won anyone to Christ. It's all about wisdom, love, and praying, asking for the power and truth of the Holy Spirit to illuminate someone's heart.

      AshandAri Reviews thank you.. but if you study the greek and Aramehic that it was written in, you will understand that the word homosexual did not exist until 1963. Also in john 3:16..whosever there means what ever manner of mankind be willing to acknowledge the Cross as a means of Grace and forgiveness. In pauls vision the word clean means washed and forgiven. Therefore who are we to say who God has fovgiven and washed based on their faith in the cross? Our job as christians is to tell the Gospel story, not judge people and let God deal with heart amd convictions of mankind..

    • @ariannanicole5765
      @ariannanicole5765 Před 9 lety +1

      Chris Christian doesn't have to use the word "homosexual" just man lying with another man and j agree with no judging and I agree with forgiveness but I don't think you are a true christian if you are actively a homosexual and see nothing wrong with it. Cause the bible says it is wrong. I wish it wasn't wrong cause I personally could care less who is with who. But God is in charge not me.

      AshandAri Reviews also says it is ok to own slaves,can not eat shrimp seafood catfish or pork, must stone your disobedient children, dont wear blended fabrics like polyester, the only reason for divorce is adultery but only if one will not suffer the other one and the family does not stone them both, not to gossip, a woman during her time of the month should be put outside the city, solomon had over 100 wives plus concubines and it was ok, men arent to shave their heads or edges of their beards....etc. no one can fullfill all of the law. That is why He came. To keep christ from one group, or say "no your not allowed" is a dangerous place, because we are all guilty of some sin everyday. Period

    It's perfectly natural for an LGBT person to still be attracted to a religious faith, in fact when one accepts who they are, they can find themselves even more drawn to some religions. Christianity is hardly defined by it's opposition to homosexuality. It may be popular with people who oppose homosexuality, but if you study the average version of the Bible independent of any Church, I think you're hardly likely to see it as one big rant against homosexuals. One can read the Old Testament, New Testament or perhaps even the Qur'an and feel as though God accepts them as them are, contrary to people around them.

    • @AndrewNewZealand
      @AndrewNewZealand Před 8 lety

      Ruru liean I believe in learning to appreciate this world. I think one of the major problems with religion and the belief in some sort of perfect afterworld that doesn't have the problems this world has, is that it causes people to become insensitive towards people who are under the realities and limitations of this world. Some might think that in a perfect world everyone would be able to find a partner of the opposite sex, but in the world, homosexuality is the only way for some people to happy in a relationship.

    • @AndrewNewZealand
      @AndrewNewZealand Před 8 lety

      +Ruru liean If homosexuality is just as offensive to you as murder, then I say that you are the one with the problem, not homosexuals. To me, the best a person can say is that they don't like homosexuality cause it offends them. But has homosexuality personally hurt you so badly that you respond to it with something as heavy handed as "It is an offense the Creator of this Earth and not the way He meant things to be"? By my judgement, nobody has the right to be so judgmental of homosexuals as a group, as to say that are opponents of "God", because of their sexuality. Even if a homosexual doesn't believe in God, the intent behind "You are in opposition to God" is offensive and it's wrong to say it.

      If you are a Christian you definitely would not want to support this apostasy! 35 states VOTED to outlaw gay marriage. The only reason it's legal is because of the Supreme Courts illegal, unconstitutional passing of the law violating constitutional law and violating states rights. The amendment should be repealed because it is illegal for the court to make such a law. Laws such as this one are a states rights issue and by constitutional law should be decided by the states. So if our tyrannical government didn't violate the law of the land two quarters or more of the states would not allow gay marriage as marriage is defined as between one man and one woman. By the way, there are only 50 states in the union!

      Ben R. Well I gave you another question to think about stuff and you said: those were different times. That's it. That's the point. It's 2017. We know being gay is not a psychological or medical problem, we know it's just as a valid sexual orientation as heterosexuality, and we know that sexual practices are not damaging whatsoever, if between consenting adults. Times change ;) the bible may be pro slavery and against "sodomy" (which, in those days, was about power of a man over another, shown in a sexual way: the term does not really include people who loved each other) but nowadays we know that slavery is deeply wrong and that humans are entitled to love another human being. The bible it's against tattoos, nowadays we know it's silly to think God would hate us for having a rose tattooed on our shoulder. The bible has a passage that prohibits eating shellfish, and it was because back in the day, those kind of food were not safe to eat, as they couldn't be clean like they are now. You have to see everything through the lenses of time and context, and scientific knowledge, too. If slavery is bad and we ignore passages of the bible where it is condoned or even suggested, why can't we understand we need to put into context homosexuality as well?

    • @bdave2049
      @bdave2049 Před 7 lety

      Actually, they don't have to justify it. Just because something is in the Bible, it doesn't mean that we are bound by it. The Bible is a construct of the church over the first few centuries and is, as much as anything, a reflection of the culture and options of various human authors, writing in their own limited knowledge. Human knowledge and understanding has moved on since then.

    I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them securely chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the great day of judgment. And don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God’s judgment. When these people eat with you in your fellowship meals commemorating the Lord’s love, they are like dangerous reefs that can shipwreck you. They are like shameless shepherds who care only for themselves. They are like clouds blowing over the land without giving any rain. They are like trees in autumn that are doubly dead, for they bear no fruit and have been pulled up by the roots. These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires. They brag loudly about themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want.

    Two options:
    >Break away from temptation and repent of any wrongdoing
    or
    >Give in and remain in a constant state of mortal sin your entire life, more likely than not landing you in Hell in the process
    Remember, the Devil's two biggest lies are these: that a sin is of no consequence, and that a sin is of such grave consequence that God will never forgive you. These are both false. One CAN be forgiven for past wrongdoings, but only if they actively seek to be forgiven.

Oh, yeah... the New Testament Bible, which, btw, was NOT spoken by Christ. It was a zealot rule created by those later came after Christ & turn Christ into a religion. Hhhmmm, may want to chew on that a bit. Even if you are not a female, I bet there are a handful of things you choose not to follow that are clear rules written in the new testament that you write off as antiquated & a reflection of those times in the past. The problem is -who speaks for God? Who defines 'God's standard'?
      The church has constantly changed its notion of 'God's standard' or 'god's will' over the centuries. Interpretations of the Bible have also constantly changed and varied through out the history of Christianity.
      I really don't think that someone who unquestionably accepts an ancient book over thinking for oneself is in position to call any one else 'Clueless'. The Bible as we know it came about over many centuries and the cannon is very much a construct of the church.

      Jesus himself broke jewish laws. If sin is a separation from god and living faithfully is a unity with god, how would it be possible for a person in a relationship that grows one's ability to be patient, kind, humble, content, and compassionate to be sinful? You judge a tree by its fruit, and if that fruit is showing an increasing ability to love it is not showing a separation from god, but unity.
