I agree completely Maria. I see music as a vehicle for teaching emotional intelligence. Learning music taught me how to express, communicate and manage my deepest emotions and as you said, helped create relationships with others. As a musician and educator, I believe that teaching music to kids of all ages gives them the gift that can guide them to become emotionally aware, intelligent and compassionate adults and bridges the cultural gaps so we can have more peace, love and joy in the world. Thank you for sharing in such a clear, concise and caring way.

That´s one of the many things that Music Therapy can improve. Actually, Spain has Master of Music Therapy. I'm a student of Music Therapy in Universidad de Buenos Aires - Argentina, here Music Therapy is a career of 5 years, and we are health practitioners same as doctors, a psycologists, surgeons, etc.

I could not agree more with Maria on the need to teach music to all kids. One step forward (by no means sufficient, but still in the direction of progress) could be to rethink the very way that kids learn music. If the first classes look more like maths than fun, well they might be put off. Let's make music fun to learn, especially for kids, let's make it their favourite game! :)

Fabio Martinelli same with sports. I'm convinced there's the right instrument and sport for everyone, you just need to be introduced to it. And it's two things that make your life better, no doubt about that

Similarly, Louis Armstrong said "If I don’t practice for a day, I know it. If I don’t practice for two days, the critics know it. And if I don’t practice for three days, the public knows it."

PAUL HARVEY - THE REST OF THE STORY
“Music is everywhere - A bird song and in bubbling brooks and in laughter even in the stars. Music is the universal language that transcends time and space. Music is one of the SEVEN FORMS OF HUMAN INTELLIGENCE, all equal in stature and in potential. And yet education - as is - is almost totally geared to nurturing linguistic and logical - mathematical abilities alone, leaving the other five forms - including music - neglected At elementary school level more than half of all school districts in the United States have no full-time music teacher. And thus our schools tend to refine intellects but neglect to discipline emotions. And undisciplined emotions keep getting us into trouble The ugliest headlines are about somebody who may have been smart as all get-out, smart enough to be a bank executive or a politician or a scientist. But if emotionally color-blind, he’s an unguided missile inevitably destined to self-destruct. Without the arts- including music-we risk graduating young people who are “right brain damaged.” For anyone to grow up complete, music education is imperative. Case histories on file with the National Commission on Music Education uncover exciting correlation between the study of music on such critical work-place performance factors as self-esteem, self discipline, the ability to work in groups and higher cognitive and analytical skill. Music in schools what little there is, is considered ancillary to “real education.” as something of a “curricular icing.” If it is to be re-established as basic to education, as fundamental to being “an educated person,” then educators and performers, composers and publishers, and those in music-related industries-must close ranks to restore educational balance in schools. The National Commission on Music Education is such a coalition. Already, in its first year, it has won the support of 75 national organizations, willing, under a slogan of “Let’s Make Music,” to work together toward the musical enrichment of public schools’ curricula. How does one plausibly argue for spending school money on music when we are graduating illiterates? Should we not be putting all our emphasis on reading, writing and math? The “back-to-basics curricula,” while it has merit, ignores the most urgent void in our present system - absence of self-discipline. The arts, inspiring - indeed requiring- self discipline, may be more “basic” to our national survival than traditional credit courses. Presently we are spending 29 times more in science than on the arts, and the result so far is worldwide intellectual embarrassment.” PAUL HARVEY NEWS, ABC 1991.

The problem with music for so many people is the way it is written down.
If ever there was a user unfriendly language, then classical music notation is it.
This is testified by the huge number of people who can only play by ear.
Well, for some, Jazz is the saviour because it not only demands discipline and collaboration, it's most important element is improvisation.
So it removes the need to read notation.
Most of what this lecture equates with acumen is mechanical ability.
Most kids that stumble reading music are tossed out.

Why you all forget about: SOUNDS of WORDS VIBRATIONS from ELECTROMAGNETIC AIRFIELDS: GOOD OR BAD? MUSIC is HEALING: YES, BUT IF IS MIXED WITH BAD WORDS FROM DIFFERENT HARMONY OF WORDS VIBRATIONS: IT BECAME: DISEASED CLOUDS RADIATION of DEADLY FORCE ON PEOPLE BRAINS and BODIES. WORDS OF POETRY HAVE MELODY WITHIN, as "SPRING SUNNY BUTTERFLY'S DANCE", YET NONE IS TEACHING ABOUT IT> WHY?

Music and art are the best way to teach the other subjects while the absence of music and art slow education down which costs the taxpayer MORE money not less. For example experiments have shown algebra is much easier to learn if color coded, but that would include art concepts, lessons are much easier to remember if sung (ABCDE...) but that would include musical activities, by taking art and music out of schools we make it harder for students to understand concepts and more difficult for them to remember lessons.
Where is the proof that art and music music work to convey concepts and enhance memory? Its called ADVERTISEMENT and its full of music and art, which is what drives the entire economy, so why not go ahead and drive education with the same music and art that drives consumerism? Why leave our most powerful psychological tools for only our most trivial ends, advertisements and commercial entertainment? Why not make education fun and interesting so its less work for teacher and student alike? Dance is also an excellent way to teach and stay healthy.
